Kyle’s first day of school turned out not to be as catastrophic as he imagined, he pretty much flew under the radar and didn’t attract too many stares or attention from his fellow students. He had no trouble in mathematics, English and Gym-class but subjects like history and so forth proved to be a bit more challenging; he was going to have to do a lot of studying if he had the hope of passing. After the bell rang, indicating that the end of the school day, Kyle got up from his seat, flung his bag onto his back and hastily made his way to Ava’s last class where they agreed to meet. The two of them only had a couple of classes together so they saw little of each other during the day, but at least it was more than it was when Kyle was at home.
Hundreds of students filled the halls, all of them heading in one direction; Kyle was the only one walking deeper into school instead of heading toward the exit. He bumped a few shoulders and got a few nasty looks from passers by but two minutes later he arrived at his destination. A broad smile curved Kyle’s lips as soon as he saw Ava, ”Hey cheri, how was class?” he said cheerfully once he reached her, giving her a small kiss on the cheek and offering her his arm. They both then started walking in the direction everyone was in earlier. The halls were now virtually free of students which made it much easier to navigate the hall.
It was not long before they reached the parking lot, ”So, what’s the plan?” he asked once they reached her car, standing at the passenger side of the car, looking at her over the roof. They didn’t really plan anything for the afternoon, they both just agreed to meet and do something... Maybe, go to the mall to do some shopping.

Watching the second hand on the clock tick by ever so slowly Ava contemplated the final answer on her quiz. It had been the only question she had left for the last ten minutes of class and as the bell rang loudly over her head she circled the c quickly before passing it in hoping for the best. Students filed out of the classroom while she carefully placed her things back into her book bag and followed the stream finding Kyle waiting patiently to the left as she exited the room. A small kiss on the cheek followed by his warm greeting that she returned with a smile they headed through the empty halls in pursuit of the parking lot. “Pop quiz, but I think I did okay.” Her shoulders shrugged in indifference as she wrapped both her arms around the one that he offered exiting the double doors and finding the car quickly.
Pulling the keys from her pocket Ava unlocked the doors dropping her bag into the backseat and leaning over the roof looking intently at Kyle when he asked for her plans. Really she hadn’t gotten much of any together but a few days before they had talked about getting him some new clothes, today seemed like as good a day as any. “I guess that kinda depends on where you wanted to go. Was there any specific store you were wanting to go to or just head over to the mall?” Opening the driver side door Ava slid into her seat waiting for him to climb in as well before starting the car and leaving the school headed towards the mall.
“Did you tell your mom you wouldn’t be home right away? I don’t want her worrying when you don’t show up after school. Ava turned on her blinker and took a right hand turn as she glanced over at him for an answer. They had talked about going shopping but not made plans so she didn’t know if he had mentioned the possibility or not. He was usually home pretty immediately after school so anything out of the ordinary his mom may be concerned something happened that got him hung up. “I also figured if she wanted I could probably agree to that dinner afterwards now. Official titles and things hadn’t been discussed between them but the way things were going kind of spoke for themselves. Eli was officially out of the picture, she hadn’t bothered trying to contact him since he stormed out of the dorm room and he hadn’t made any kind of attempt either. Being with Kyle was surreal though, it was how things felt like they were supposed to be, it had just taken admitting it to herself. Now that she had told him she loved him, a dinner with his family wasn’t such a big deal, they surely knew by now. “You do have your wallet right?”

”Pop quiz? I would’ve been screwed…” was all Kyle said in response to Ava’s answer followed by a nervous chuckle, he was so far behind on almost everything that he had no idea if it was even possible for him to graduate. He wasn’t about to give up though, winners never quit and quitters never win.
Once Ava unlocked the car Kyle opened the bag door, carefully placed his bag on the back seat before closing the door again, ”I don’t know really, maybe just check them all out, see what works?” he said as he opened his door and got into the car, not long after the car pulled off in the general direction of the mall and Kyle rested his head against his seat’s headrest, the day had really taken a toll on him, especially the mathematics part, which left him with a irritating headache. ”My mom knows I’ll be with you, she’s under the impression that we’ll be studying though, I might want to correct her on that.” he said as he took his phone out of his pocket and proceeded to text his mom with the details of their plans, she wouldn’t be too pissed since she already gave him his dad’s credit card for clothes prior to him mentioning the fact that everything he owned was slightly to small to Ava. Kyle’s once blank expression turned into a smile when Ava mentioned having dinner with them tonight ”Great timing, she mentioned wanting to cook your favorite when you came over, she usually starts dinner around this time.” he said while he added on to his text message that Ava would be joining them for dinner and hit sent shortly after.
Kyle’s mom had always been very fond of Ava and over their ups and downs over the last few weeks she was their biggest cheerleader, Kyle didn’t share much of what happened between them with her, but she always seemed to know that something was off and would either convince Kyle to make things right or play cupid like she did when he was in the hospital, whether or not her view on Ava would’ve changed if she knew everything was hard to say, but she’d probably not have been so pushy with Kyle then. As Kyle pushed his phone back into his pocket he answered Ava’s next question, ”I have something even better, three words, platinum credit card.” and he faked and evil laugh shortly after. Even with Kyle’s hospital expenses and so forth, the Tregers still had more than enough money with his father being the CEO of a major company. His mother used to work too, before Kyle got into the accident, but decided after Kyle woke up that she wasn’t going back just yet.
Ava soon parked the car in the mall’s parking lot and they both got out at almost the same time, ”Any ideas on where to go first?” Kyle asked as he walked around the car toward her, rubbing his temples through his beanie, which didn’t really help much at all, so he dropped his arms back to his side just before he reached Ava.

With a shake of her head Ava watched Kyle pull his cellphone from the pocket of his jeans and text his mother the revised plans for the afternoon. It amused her that he had told her there were studying plans, because she hadn’t even known about those up until that moment he mentioned it. No matter what they were doing though she generally tended not to care. Ava had been around the family long enough, and they had been through so much together that they trusted her even when they weren’t sure about Kyle.
“Are you okay?” Her steps stopped right where she was as she shut the door behind her and threw her bag over her shoulder. Ava had seen Kyle rubbing his head and since the last time there was major problems everything concerned her now. Waiting for him to reassure her before walking again she took his hand watching for cars as they crossed the parking lot and headed into the main entrance of the mall near the food court. “They are your clothes. Old Navy, JcPenney’s, The Buckle, Pacsun? As they entered the mall the buckle was the closest to them so she just led him in there before even having the opportunity to answer. Searching out stores would be useless, they could just pick them out as they went.
Ava ran her fingers over some of the clothes sifting through the racks of clothes before stopping to look at him again. He wasn’t her Barbie, he could pick out his own clothes too. “Did you want long sleeve? Short? Summery?” Her head leaned to the side waiting patiently for an answer. He practically had told her his entire wardrobe more or less needed to be redone so they were in for a long trip at that rate. If nothing else they could find a few things today to get him started and go a few other places another time.

”I’m fine babe, just a bit of a headache… Nothing like before though, don’t worry.” was Kyle’s reassurance, he knew it wasn’t because this headache wasn’t half as painful as the migraines he had, just very irritating ”Maths seems to give me a headache.” he added with a chuckle before they entered the mall. Kyle’s heart dropped when he saw the size of the place; if he had to do this on his own he wouldn’t know where to begin. He was about to tell her he had no idea where to go when she led them into the store closest to them, The Buckle, the name rang no bells in his head but he didn’t expect it to, he had pretty made peace with a fact that he would have to re-learn just about everything.
”Since it’s almost Spring I think short sleeve would be best?” he said in a questioningly manner, raising his eyebrows slightly before proceeding to browse through the short sleeve shirts they had to choose from, there were so many choices and he decided just to grab the first thing that stood out to him. ”Is this ok?” he asked as he took a shirt off the rack, the bright red was what attracted him to it but he wasn’t sure if it would look good on him though, Ava would know better. ”They all seem fine to me.” he added, not feeling very picky, as long as he didn’t turn out looking silly he’d wear pretty much anything.
As he stood there, waiting for Ava’s reply he couldn’t help but think that this was probably not one of his hobbies before the accident, he hated having to choose out of hundreds of perfectly fine shirts, making decisions wasn’t really his strong suit you could say. ”Which do you like?”

In agreement that short sleeves would be best with the warm weather coming Kyle started browsing through the rack nearest to them as Ava took to the next. She couldn’t help but smile as she noticed the look of lost confusion on his face, knowing full and well this probably was still not his favorite past time but it was well over due. Lifting a shirt above the clothing rack, Kyle’s voice called out to her asking for her opinion on the red striped shirt in his hands. Lifting her eyes to see it she shrugged her shoulders. “If you like it I like it.” It wasn’t exactly her style but these were his clothes and not every piece he owned needed to be picked out by her just because he wanted to get out the doors as soon as possible.
Ava walked around the store taking a few items in her arms as she made her way back to Kyle. Shirts had been his biggest need as far as she had understood but she also pulled a pair of jeans to try and figure out his sizing and maybe grab one or two of just to add to his closet in the process. “Why don’t you go try some of this on and the things you have. Whatever works great, and whatever doesn’t we will call it good in here and move on.” Tossing the clothes from over her arm into his and leading him back towards the fitting room she stood outside patiently waiting for him to reappear after going through all the clothes she had given him. She wouldn’t let him walk out with just one or two things, and they all needed to fit properly so he was going to take the time to do so, otherwise she would remind him it would mean another trip back to exchange everything.

The way Ava spoke Kyle could tell she didn’t like the shirt, to be honest he didn’t even know what he liked yet, except for the fact that it was red there wasn’t really any other reason for him buying it. ”I don’t know what I like…” he said followed by a sigh, he really didn’t look forward to this much, he would much prefer to just have her pick out everything. He took nothing else off the rack, instead he just stood there and observed Ava’s choices, and they too seemed good enough to him. As he waited he got tired of staring at the shirts and later diverted his attention to Ava herself, he could stare at her for hours at a time. His thoughts eventually drifted to that night at her apartment and he had to pull himself back to reality, blushing with what would seem for no reason to her, unless she noticed the way he was staring at her ’You’re such a perv. Treger.’ he shunned himself, just before she spoke again, holding a arm full of shirts.
He looked from her face, to the clothes and back again, ”Okay then.” was all he said before he followed to the fitting rooms, not really walking too fast, the thought of getting dressed and undressed over and over again didn’t exactly seem like any fun. He entered the fitting room; put the clothes down leaving only one, the top one of the pile in his hand. It only took him a few seconds to switch shirts, but that one seemed too tight for him so he took it off immediately and moved on to the next one, the one he picked, looking at himself in the mirror afterward, it didn’t seem right, so he took it off as well. The next shirt he put on was much better though, so he opened the fitting room door and peeked out, making sure there weren’t too many people in sight before walking toward Ava, who waited for him.
”Yes? No?...:” he asked, lifting his hands and spinning around once. He didn’t really care too much about what he wore, but he wanted to look nice for her. ”Be brutally honest.” he added with a smile.

The little outing Ava had taken Kyle on was no doubt not any kind of fun for him, shopping for clothes, trying everything on, not really having any idea of what his style was before. But she wondered if he really had to look so sad and depressed about it as he stowed away into one of the fitting rooms in a separate back corner area of the store. If she had any idea of size, or felt that she could pick out anything he himself would like and not just be pacifying her by saying he did, she would do it all herself and let him go run off to the sports store or something. The first few stores though he needed to at least be a part of the searching so they could get him a good collection going before changing lanes.
Kyle emerged again from the fitting room with one of the shirts she had picked out on and Ava gave him a smile. Her hand smoothed down the shoulder and pushed his shoulder lightly again making him turn one more time but this time slower than he had before so she could make sure the length in the back wasn’t too short or hiked up. “ I like it. Did none of the other ones fit?” Realizing he had been in there long enough to try on several of them but this had been the first one he opted to show her she wasn’t surprised when he shook his head no. Looking back inside the door to the pile of clothes sitting on the bench she shrugged her shoulders and held out her arms for him to give them back to her. “I guess pull out the things that did fit to keep them separate. If there was anything you liked but just need a different size we can find those two. Otherwise I will put the rest on the rack over here to be put up and we can get out of here.”

Kyle wasn’t done trying on all the shirts, but now that he knew which ones would fit him he wasn’t about to tell Ava that, ”There’s a few that makes me look like I’m trying really hard to look muscular.” he replied to her question with a small smile ”But over half of them do.” he added shortly after, looking down at the shirt he was wearing instead of at Ava, afraid that she might see that he wasn’t being one hundred percent truthful. A few seconds later he looked up at her again and listened as she spoke ”Let’s just get the ones that fit and worry about everything else later, I’m not really in the mood for this anymore.” he said, hoping she wouldn’t be mad at him for dragging her all the way to the mall for a couple of shirts, the pants he had at home fit fine and he would be fine with the two or three proper jackets he had for now, he would much rather be doing something more fun.
He waited for Ava to respond to his suggestion before heading back into the fitting room to change back into the shirt he came in and sort out the shirts, putting them back on their hangers before sorting them into two piles, one that fit, or would fit and ones that didn’t. He soon came back out of the dressing rooms and put the shirts that didn’t fit back on the rack before facing Ava again ”All of these are perfect.” he said taking her hand in his and leading her toward the cashiers. The line wasn’t long at all and before he knew it, it was his turn to pay. As he put the pile of shirts down on the counter for the cashier to ring up he looked at Ava he asked ”Any ideas of what to do that isn’t entirely torturous?” raising his eyebrows slightly, if it were up to him they’d be back in her dorm room, finished what they started a few days ago and this time he’d be prepared, but he wasn’t about to suggest that in front of a bunch of strangers, heck, not even if it were just the two of them, it was way too, dodgy. Kyle couldn’t help but to feel guilty for only having one thing on his mind all the time, he just wished he could get it out of his system and maybe then be able to be close to her without wanting to rip her clothes off. He felt strong chemistry with Ava, the kind he never thought could exist and he didn’t want her to feel that all they had was chemistry, because there was much more than that too.
As soon as every shirt was rang up Kyle took his wallet out of his front pocket, opened it and handed his dad’s credit card to the cashier without even bothering to check the total, he was way too busy trying to calm his mind and he also wondered whether he felt this strong sexual tension with her before the accident, or if somehow the accident altered him personality and turned him into a one track minded freak.

Standing at the cash register while Kyle paid Ava thought over the rest of the mall and the things they had left to do for the day. She had agreed to come with him not only because he very obviously needed an update to his wardrobe but she had a few things of her own she needed to purchase while out and about. Whether or not he might find them torturous was anyone’s guess but at least it didn’t include his own endless fashion show, he could stand around for all she cared, go look at his own things. “You don’t have to tag along if you don’t want to but I have a few things to get. I need a swim suit for spring break most importantly, and a few other things.” The cashier handed him a bag with his things in it and she shrugged her shoulders in question as they exited the store. Kyle nodded his head in such a way that stated his agreement and she looked in both directions before leading him to their left in search of PacSun.
Ava saw a few stores along the way she decided she might stop back by afterwards but otherwise it didn’t take long for them to get to the other side of the mall where the store was located. She really wasn’t picky about a bathing suit, she could get one from Walmart and be just as content but being at the mall and PacSun being sort of a surfer type store it had seemed like the most obvious place to start her search. “ I will just grab a few real quick then try them on. Make this as quick and painless as possible for you. If I don’t find anything I can always come back later by myself.”
There were several racks of bikini’s and one pieces lining the wall of the store and it didn’t take long for Ava to grab a handful in her size before dragging Kyle again to the back of the store where there was a small hall into the fitting room area. “ There is a couch over there if you wanna sit.” She watched him walk away and slowly opened one of the doors peaking inside to make sure it was empty before going in all the way and shutting the door behind her.
The first one Ava tried on was cute. She loved the teal, pink, and brown plaid it had on it but something drove her crazy about it. Standing in the mirror she evaluated it over and over again before deciding she would never figure it out and passing on it instead. Pulling it off herself she put it back on the hanger the way it had been before and then moved on through the next few. Picking up the second to last one sitting on the bench she again removed it from the hanger and tied herself into the top and pulled the bottoms up over her waist examining herself once more in the mirror. She loved white on her skin tone with her dark hair, the flower on the top was perfect, and it was simple in all the right ways without being overly revealing. Looking at her cell phone she realized she had been in there fifteen minutes already and quickly tried taking it off. Again she tried pulling the strings but the top was not coming undone, apparently having gotten caught in some sort of knot, her hair included as it pulled tightly and she winced in pain.
“Kyle?” Her voice called out to him as she slowly opened the door, the look on Ava’s face rather embarrassed as she looked around for anyone else who might be there before waving him into the room. Shutting the door behind him again as he stepped inside she dropped the laces of the bikini behind her neck and stood in front of him. “I can’t get the knot out.”
