Being awake felt really strange to Kyle, there were so many things around him that he didn’t recognize, that he couldn’t name and it was driving him insane. His parents told him a lot about his life in high school, about the friends he had, but to him it felt like he had no friends, because he couldn’t remember any of them. His parents wouldn’t tell him much about the accident, they avoided the subject as best they could because they didn’t want to upset Kyle, so he had no idea that his best friend out of all the friends he had, died that night.
Holding a children’s book Kyle walked down the street, looking for a place to read the ridiculous thing without being seen, he didn’t feel like being embarrassed today, he knew not knowing the basic things would be weird to others. As Kyle passed blocks of houses and trees he focused, trying to remember something, a single small detail about his past, the doctors said anything could trigger a memory and that he just had to be patient because they were confident that his memories, or at least most of the would return eventually. A frown curved his face but he got nothing, not even a glimpse, of the past everyone made out to have been so great.
With a sigh Kyle kept on walking, this time looking around to find a place to sit, a few turns and he reached a place he couldn’t recall, which came to no surprise to him since he couldn’t recall anything these days, when he got closer he saw a mass of water a few feet away from him, "queric..." he said, frowning, not sure if he got it right and something told him he didn’t. He sat down a few feet from where the water began in the shade of a big tree and concentrated hard, about a few minutes passed before he shouted "quarry!" the excitement in his voice apparent, without thinking about what someone would think if they heard him.
After a few seconds of pure joy due to the fact that he had remembered something, he crossed his legs and placed the children’s book on his lap and opened it to the first page. The book was filled with pictures of everyday things along with their names, as stupid as it may seem to others, this was one of the best ways he could re-learn some of the things he had forgotten.

Merrick hadn't felt like going to school today as she woke up and went to grab herself a bowl of cereal. She thought the day had been too beautiful to sit in her lecture halls, so she made the decision to just skip the day and not worry about it. It's not like the college would mind, and plus there were so many people in the class that he wouldn't even notice her gone she figured. She was sure one day of missed classes wouldn't be the end of the world, and if it was well then at least she wouldn't have to worry about attending classes ever again.
She threw some clothes on not feeling the need to stick around the house, but since most of her friends were either attending class, at the high school, or working right now she was pretty much alone. It's not that she hated being alone, she quite loved the peace and quiet, but sometimes she did wish for company. She grabbed her keys and left the house as she locked the door behind and and started down the road looking around at the people walking all around her. With the beautiful day outside a lot of other people obviously had the same idea as her, they were going to take advantage of the weather, but each one she noticed seemed so caught up in their own world that she didn't bother to even try to talk to them.
Instead she took the path less traveled out towards the quarry. She had found this place not too long ago when she'd been exploring, and since then she would head in that direction when she just wanted to get away and clear her mind. It's not like anything all that important was even weighing on it though, but for some reason she knew it'd still at least put her at peace. She found it with no problem and went to look out at the water. She watched it as the peace and quiet surrounded her, but soon her body tensed as she was startled by a loud noise a short distance from her.
"You about gave me a heartattack," she put her hand to her chest feeling her pounding heart as she took a few deep breaths to calm it down. "I've never seen someone so excited about a quarry," there really wasn't something so exciting about a place man made and dug out for rock deposits or whatever it was used for at one point. She took a good look at him and something seemed familiar, so she took a few steps closer trying to glance in his lap to see what he was looking at. From the looks of it she could make out one of those simple word picture books for kids, but at his age why was he still looking at those?
"Out of big boy books at the library?" She made the comment without thinking as she pointed at the book, but soon it clicked in her mind where she had seen him, "You're that boy, the hospital boy, sleeping beauty," he was gorgeous and she'd went into his room a few times to talk to his mother when she'd seen her in there crying beside his bed. "aren't you supposed to be sleeping still?" She had to admit she hadn't kept up with what was happening with him, but the last she knew he was still in a coma. "Welcome back to reality." She felt like such an ass now, but she couldn't help herself, sometimes things just came out of her mouth without even thinking.

Kyle hated having to spend his time alone and secluded from the rest of civilization, he would much rather be out and about, meeting people and getting back to life which he had missed about a year of, but he was afraid, afraid that he would seem ridiculous in front of other people, afraid he would embarrass himself so badly that he would be an outcast for the rest of his life, so instead he decided to prepare himself first, he had to re-learn all the simple things in order for him not to look like an idiot in front of people. He wasn’t really a shy person, in fact he was actually very confident, he knew that, he could feel that, but a part of him was shy now, because of his memory loss and his fear of looking like a retard.
In the week that he has been out of his coma, he spent his days mostly at home, going over his family history with his mom and dad, learning how to tie his shoes and playing the guitar, which was one thing he hadn’t forgotten how to do for some reason. He had gotten pretty bored with his house after not to long though and after pleading with his mother she finally gave in and allowed him to go out on his own on the condition that he would take his cell phone with him and text her every hour to let her know that he was ok.
When Merrick confronted him about his sudden, strange outburst his head snapped up and he smiled awkwardly, blushing slightly. ”I’m really sorry about that…” was all he could manage to get out, he wasn’t even going to attempt explaining it to her, he didn’t even know where he would begin if he had to, it would probably sound fictional to anyone he told anyway. Without thinking twice, he quickly shut his book and tried to hide it from her, but it was too late and her comment made him blush even more ”I, uh… Well…” he said stupidly, but soon decided joking about it would be better than the awkward silence that was inevitable ”Yeah, I had a choice between the adventures of Barbie in fairyland, or this… So I went for the less tortures of the two.” he said with a chuckle, not really sure if what he said was funny enough to laugh about.
When she mentioned the hospital, he frowned; his mother didn’t mention someone else coming to visit him, could they have been friends before the accident? ”I wouldn’t go as far as calling me beautiful, but yes, that’s me…. And thanks for the compliment and the warm welcome.” he joked, getting up slowly, ”I’m Kyle…” he introduced himself, extending his hand towards her ”Do I know you?” he finally decided to ask a few seconds later.

She had to admit that he had this innocent charm to him. The way he would apologize even though there was no need, and watching him try to conceal the book had her grinning as she stepped closer. "And you didn't choose Barbie? She's a fox, you're missing out," she let a roll of laughter escape as she watched him, "I guess it might look a bit weird for a guy like you to be walking around with a Barbie book though, definitely picked the lesser of the two evils."
Merrick wished she could have sounded at least a bit nicer around this fresh face, but her words were getting ahead of her and she was just blurting everything out without thinking. He seemed to be taking it in good stride as she watched him stand up, her hand falling to rest on her hip as she listened to him, "i'm a pretty good judge of beautiful people, but if you'd prefer handsome I guess I could change my words up a little," she picked a hand up to show the smallest gap between her finger and thumb, "just a little though."
Her grin spread wider as he introduced himself and she looked at his extended hand. "Merrick," she decided that she would introduce herself as well, and when he asked if he'd known her she couldn't help but let a smirk sneak across her face. She could really mess with him right now and say that they had known each other, she could probably even come up with an awesome story right off the top of her head as to how much they know one another, but she decided against it as she simply shrugged before shaking her head, "don't worry, i'm a new face."
"It must be hard for you to have to piece everything together, but at least you get a second chance right?" Merrick really had a soft spot for the hospital and sick children, and to meet someone who knew hardly anything about his past was pretty sad for her. She honestly couldn't even begin to imagine what he was going through, "So how much do you really know exactly, anything?" She had to ask, perhaps she could spark some memory, though she had no idea how she'd do that.

Kyle should’ve been somewhat embarrassed with Merrick’s comments about his reading material, but strangely enough he wasn’t, in fact he found he found her comments hilarious, so a good sense of humor could be added to the list of new things he had learned about himself. ”You know what, you’re right…. Damnit, how could I have been so stupid?” he joked, smiling broadly ”Then I could’ve looked at two foxes in one day.” he added more seriously without thinking, only afterward realizing that he was shamelessly flirting.
Whether Merrick was flirting with him, or just kidding around, Kyle couldn’t tell but her comment made the smile he previously had return, ”No, I’ll take beautiful, haven’t had an ego boost in over a year, I’m due for one.” he said and chuckled slightly, surprised that he hadn’t forgotten a single word since meeting her, maybe she was his good luck charm?
When she confirmed that they didn’t know each other before his coma Kyle felt very relieved, yes he did want to rediscover his past, but he also wanted to build a new future, incase his past wasn’t as great as he hoped for. ”Well, it’s really nice to meet you Merrick.” he decided to say after her introduction, then just stared into her eyes for a few seconds, to him they were amazingly beautiful, but he didn’t mention that because as far as he knew, he wasn’t developing a crush on her and wouldn’t want her to think that either.
”I haven’t pieced much together yet, it is very hard, but I’ll get there eventually I guess… Just gotta be patient. he replied to what to him was a rhetorical question but shortly after added on ”I’d rather piece it together than being dead or still in a coma.” Her question about his memories made him smile on the inside, as strange as that might sound, he could sense that she actually did want to know more about him and wasn’t just asking it out of pure curiosity, but because she was genuinely interested in knowing more about him. ”As far as events in my past goes; I can’t remember a thing, no names, no faces, not a single day of my life before the accident.” he started telling her, dragging his hand through his chocolate brown hair before continuing ”My mom told me a bit, but it’s kind of like listening to a story of someone else’s life… I also can’t remember the names of simple things like quarries and such, hence the choice of literature and the sudden outburst that nearly caused you to go into cardiac arrest.” he added with a smile ”There’s only a few things I can remember, I can still play guitar, read, and write, but not much of anything else.”

Hearing him swear caught Merrick offguard. Even if it was just a very minor one she still hadn't expected it from someone that looked like him, so it was cute to see that he had at least a little edge to himself. The fox comment again caught her off guard as she stared at him for a second, a goofy grin spreading itself across her face, and she couldn't help but chuckle watching him. "Well aren't you just a little flirt," Merrick loved it though so she didn't mind one bit, and the way he'd said it had been adorable. "I am much more fun to play with though," the comment had sounded a lot dirtier than she'd expected it to be, but there really was no taking it back now.
"That must have sucked," Merrick could not go a day without an ego boost it seemed, she was quite the little attention whore, "now you're probably getting fed them like they're a continental breakfast." Would he even know what she was talking about? She hadn't talked to someone who had just woken up from a coma so she honestly wasn't sure what she should say, "you should be happy though, I don't just compliment everyone, so that must mean you're special." It was true though, Merrick didn't see the need to compliment everyone, but if she came across one deserving enough of one she'd be damn sure to give it to them.
"Lovely to meet you as well, Kyle," she used his name just to show that she'd been listening when he'd introduced himself. She nodded hearing him talk about his past, and she couldn't help but laugh when he brought up the word patient. "I bet someone like you has the patience of a hummingbird. Those things are constantly moving a mile a minute," she shrugged her shoulders out glancing back at the water before her attention was brought to him once more, "I don't mean that in a bad way, it's just i'd expect someone who hasn't been able to move in so long to want to get out and explore, patience not being a factor at all." Merrick had very little patience, but that's just because she was always living the fast life when she was in Vegas, so she found once she moved here her life had became rather dull. "I know what you're saying though, I understand."
Hearing all that he could remember, which wasn't very much at all, caused her to frown as she glanced down at the book tucked in his arm. She had the urge to ask him about the accident but stopped herself, that could be a story for another time perhaps, "let me ask you this then, from the stories your moms been telling you, did the man she was talking about have it all? Friends? A good life?" She knew it must be weird to hear your life story without remembering a piece of it, but she also knew that certain triggers could help him remember, but she had no idea how those worked or what needed to happen. "At least you still have your future to look forward to, and maybe with time the past will come back to you?" She had to sound hopeful, it's all she knew how to do at the moment.

Merrick’s comment about ‘playing’ with her being much more fun made Kyle chuckle, he had a feeling that it came out a bit different that she intended it to but couldn’t help but to mock her about it a bit ”I’ll be sure to try and see if you’re right sometime… Thanks for the idea.” he said, he wasn’t entirely joking, no-one in their right mind would turn down a girl as beautiful as her, not to mention her great personality, she seemed like the all-in-one type of girl who guys would give their two front teeth for. ”Are you sure your boyfriend wouldn’t mind me trespassing on his playground though?” he asked a few seconds later, biting on his bottom lip lightly unable to keep certain R-rated thoughts from going through his mind, only asking so that he could find out whether she was single or not, yet he wasn’t even sure whether or not he was interested in her as more than a friend, it was as if he said these stuff without thinking about it, like it was instinct rather than a thought out act.
”Surprisingly I don’t really, just from my mother, who’s biased since I’m her son, so it doesn’t really do much for my ego.” he said after laughing a little, the things she said and how she said them seemed to crack him up all time and he liked the sensation of laughing, it lightened his previously gloomy mood. ”I am honored to be a recipient of your compliments and you are more than welcome to keep them coming.” Her mentioning his patients made him sigh ”I’m managing to pace myself, I don’t really go out into crowded places, forgetting things around people is really embarrassing.” he said hanging his head a bit and looking at the ground, it was the first time since meeting her that he felt a bit shy.
How interested she was in hearing about him made Kyle even more eager to speak to her about it, it was good to get a fresh perspective from someone who didn’t know him before the accident, it was difficult for him at home, he felt like he was letting his mother down by not being the same as he was back then, for not remembering anything about her, he felt extremely guilty, as silly as that might sound. ”I guess so, it sounded pretty great, but she might be skipping over all the bad stuff, so I couldn’t say for sure.” He answered after thinking about it for a few seconds, ”Sometimes I feel like they’re keeping stuff from me, there things they just refuse to talk about.” he added, the more he spoke the more he wanted to say ”I, I feel very guilty sometimes, for not being who they remember, for not remembering them.” he said a few seconds later, getting a bit emotional and has to calm himself down quickly as he felt a bit of tears form around his eyes, he wasn’t going to cry in front of a complete stranger, that would be taking it too fast.
Hoping that she didn’t notice his emotional state, Kyle took two steps backwards, lost his balance and tripped over a large rock, falling flat on his back ”Oh and I forgot to mention that I’m a safety hazard. he said while looking up at her, not even bothering to get up ”I’ve been tripping over and walking into things all week, I’m about as coordinated as one legged nine month old baby.

"At least you haven't lost your sense of humor," Merrick was the type of person that didn't see the point in settling down, she loved to stay single and play the field for as long as she could, and of course she never passed up getting to be physical with a handsome stranger. She had to laugh at his question though shaking her head quickly dismissing the idea, "boyfriends are for people wanting to settle down and relax, I haven't had one of those in ages," not since she had just started high school and thought having one was the cool thing to do. That was back when she actually cared what others thought of her, but since then she could care less and went off in her own direction.
Once again she burst out laughing as she could imagine his mother probably smothering him with kisses and calling him her handsome little man constantly, "yeah, I could see where that might be awkward if she's the only one trying to boost that ego of yours," she pointed towards his chest unsure of where exactly an ego would be since it wasn't an actual body part. "You know what, you talk funny, it's adorable," he had manners and seemed to be well versed so that was a good thing, but the way he'd strung together his sentence had her cracking up. "You might just be too cute for your own good. You'll end up giving me a cavity and we wouldn't want that now would we?" She pointed from him to her mouth before placing her hand back at her side, the pointing obviously a trait she'd gotten from her family. "You should never feel embarassed, and if they ask just make a lame comment about how they must not have been that great if you don't remember them," it's what she would have done, but he seemed to be a lot nicer than her so she knew that wouldn't go over well with him.
Merrick could understand why his mother would want to skip over the bad things that'd happened in his life, but as he told her he'd felt they were hiding things from him she couldn't help but frown. She hated when her father left things from her, though she was sneaky enough that she'd find out all his secrets rather quickly, so for them to leave stuff from him after being in a coma for a while was a bitch. "Why would you feel guilty about that?" She shook her head as he talked about his feelings, "You should never feel guilty for being yourself. You may not remember every detail about your life up to this point, but i'm pretty sure you're the same son they know and love." She shrugged, honestly she didn't want to think of it as any other way. He had the love and support of his family, a seemingly happy and perfect life, so she didn't think he should dwell on the parts they were leaving out. "I'd say it's probably for your own good that they're leaving shit out, but who knows, parents are messed up like that and do things they think will help-" she laughed rolling her eyes at how lame parents could be, her father especially, "when really they make situations worse than they should even be."
She could tell that there'd been a change in his emotions, but as she was looking around she hadn't noticed him start to break down, but she sure did notice him as he plummeted to the ground falling on his backside. Merrick did all that she knew and took a few steps forward leaning down and offering her hand to help him up. "When you fall all you do is get right back up again, don't ever stay down or it'll show defeat, first lesson on life." she waved her hand infront of him motioning for him to take it as she helped him back up. "Just keep dusting yourself off and pushing forward, don't let the world fuck with you," she felt the need to give this bright eyed boy a few pointers so he wasn't as clueless, but she wasn't sure if she could help at all.

Being in a relationship was a foreign concept for Kyle, he had no recollection of ever being in one, but he did know what it implied. Unlike Merrick Kyle liked the idea of being in a relationship, finding that one person with whom you were destined to spend the rest of your life with. Although he liked the idea of a relationship, he also didn’t see anything wrong with playing the field until you found that someone. ”It can’t be all that bad, settling down, the idea is nice… he thought out loud, more talking to himself than he was to her.
”Awkward is an understatement, makes me feel pathetic, because I sort of like it…. he said, being totally honest he did and it was that he did which made him feel awkward about it, was he a momma’s boy? He wasn’t sure, is he one now? Pretty much, yes. When she mentioned him talking funny he smiled, being funny wasn’t a bad thing he guessed, he didn’t realize that he did, but now that he thought about it he realized that he said things as soon as they came to mind and that could cause things to sound a little mixed up sometimes, but not to the extent that he wasn’t understandable ”Funny eh? Well I’ll be sure to keep it up just to make you smile. he said before adding ”I guess you’re going to have to brush a lot more, because my sweetness cannot be toned down or tamed.” then laughed at himself for being so silly.
Her idea of handling people who didn’t like that he couldn’t remember him made him smile and he didn’t know why, ”I couldn’t do that... It’s just a little too evil.” he said and then realized he was smiling because he knew he would never have the heart to say something like that to someone. He listened as she gave her point of view on how he felt, it made him feel a bit better ”You’re probably right, I’m just being dramatic, maybe I’ve just discovered another trait about myself I didn’t know.” he joked, but he wasn’t actually a dramatic person, the way he felt was probably normal for someone in his situation.
”Don’t get fucked by the world… Got it.” as he got up with her help, trying to brighten his own mood and it did to some extent, ”But seriously, thank you, for listening, I don’t think I usually expect strangers to go all doctor Phil on me.” he added sincerely.
Afterwards he stood there for a few seconds in silence, taking in everything he had just heard, Merrick was being so kind to him and he tried to restrain his urge to hug her, she didn’t seem like it at first sight, but she was actually a very sweet and caring person. ”Awh what the hell, I’m going to hug you now, you deserve one… he said finally giving in to his urge and moved closer, giving her a small hug that lasted about ten seconds before stepping back again. ”You feel like doing something?” he then asked ”Get a cup of coffee or something a little more fun?”

Merrick at least humored him and listened to his idea on settling down, and how it couldn't be all that bad, but in the end it did not sway her opinion at all. "I guess, if that is your sort of thing, but settling down just seems too permanent for me," she didn't want to come out and say that the idea scared her, but out of every emotion that was the first one that came to her mind. "You never know though, the idea could sound great, but when it finally happens it could be anything but what you expected, but I guess that's half the fun right?" She sighed as she shook her head staring out at the water for a moment before bringing her attention back to him, a smile forming on her lips hoping to drop the subject, love and relationships were never the best with her.
Merrick was thankful as the subject changed, but soon she put her hand over her mouth laughing as she watched him, "that is the cutest damn thing." Hearing him admit that he loved his mothers compliments had her grinning from ear to ear, most men would be too stubborn to admit something like that, but that could be because most men she'd met hadn't just woken up from a coma. "Being a mama's boy isn't all that bad, at least it's one chick that can't leave you right?" It's what women were good at, in her opinion anyway, so having someone that was there until death was great. She loved her family, but like most girls she definitely preferred her father. "You damn well better, i'm holding you to your word," she pointed at him grinning before soon bursting out into a wild fit of laughter. "I haven't even been here long enough to find a dentist," she pouted though soon that grin came right back. "I hope you keep saying cute shit like that the entire time we hang out."
"Evil? Oh come on, it's not that bad," she shrugged some knowing she'd do something like that in a heartbeat, but what wasn't that bad to her probably did sound evil to normal people. "I doubt you're just being dramatic, but even so i'm pretty sure you have a reason for it," she looked him over and took notice that his smile never really seemed to falter. He was far too happy to be dramatic and that was a good thing. She hated people who spent most of their time just making things dramatic for all those around. "Good," she smirked when she heard him swear, the word sounding foreign on a tongue like that, but he looked good doing it and that's all that really mattered. Hearing him thank her once more she just waved it off and shrugged, "Dr. Phil, not what I was going for, but, uh, you're, uh, wel-" she stopped talking and just nodded some, "yeah, you know what i'm trying to say."
When she heard him say the word hug her eyes widened as she watched him shuffle forward. She didn't mind though as she accepted the hug, but almost as fast as it'd began it was pretty much done, and she just watched him again take those steps back to distance their bodies. "If people gave me everything I deserve this world would be a whole different place," she smirked as she licked her lips as they'd started to feel dry. "Coffee? You call getting some coffee fun?" she chuckled shrugging her shoulders, "I guess so, remind me to actually teach you the meaning of that word sometime, there are tons of other things so much more fun than getting coffee."

Merrick’s reluctance to commit was common for someone her age, but Kyle wasn’t someone who acted his age in all aspects of life. The fact that she didn’t want to settle down didn’t make him think less of her though, he actually respected how independent she was, she didn’t need anyone to make her feel like she had a purpose, Kyle on the other hand like feeling like he had a place in the world, a purpose, which is why he has had only one girlfriend in his entire life, whom he would’ve given anything for and loved with all his heart. He couldn’t remember her anymore though, he was totally oblivious to the fact that he even had a girlfriend, let alone a serious girlfriend in the past, who still attended Jackson High and was equally oblivious to the fact that he had awaken from his coma. [color-=c3d7c2]”Whoever manages to tame you and could call you theirs will be very lucky.” he said in reply to her comments before changing the subject, he could sense that she didn’t really want to talk about romance.
Kyle liked that Merrick seemed to like him when he was totally winging it, saying whatever came to mind, because that was his thing, ”Sure thing, saying cute stuff seems to come naturally around you.” he said with a smile ”But remember I’m sweet and cute but I’m a guy… I’m rugged and all that too…. I think.” he said, not sure if what he just said was true or not, but he was actually once again just goofing around ”Well that’s what you tell anyone who asks…” he added jokingly, winking at Merrick before frowning, not remembering what the gesture meant, he did it instinctively, without having to think about it. ”This is going to sound really stupid, but what was that I just did? What does it mean?” he asked before demonstrating it again.
”Yeah, not letting people walk over you is never a bad thing, being too much of a softy to tell them to buzz off is though… And that’s me I guess.” he said with a shrug, Kyle didn’t like telling people off, he liked keeping the peace, but even though he wasn’t aware of it yet, when he was pushed far enough he would probably tell them where to stick their heads. Kyle was the type of person that could take just about anything, but when it came to a point where it got too much, he would burst. He was the same when it came to his friends and family, if a guy ever hurt one of his female friend, Kyle would kick his ass, Kyle often resorted to physical violence when it came to his female friends and other guys, he was very protective over them..”I didn’t mean Dr. Phil in a bad way, you actually made me feel much better that Dr. Phil could’ve. he said when she seemed to take what he said the wrong way,. ”And yes, I get it.” he added.
”Hey, give comatose kid a break here, he knows not what to do….” he joked when Merrick made fun of his idea of fun, he didn’t really know what to do, and that was the first thing that came to mind, ”Since I cannot remember how to drive a car anymore, I’ll call us a cab.” he said a few seconds later as he took his phone out of his pocket and pressed the speed dial button for the cab company, before holding the phone to his ear. It took him only a minute to get them a taxi and that taxi took a total of five minutes to arrive, in those five minutes Kyle attempted to restart their conversation ”What is your idea of fun then?”
