"Yes Charlie. It was way beyond gross." He smiled at his sexually fustrated sister. It was hard not to laugh around her. When he brought up emancipation though, her demeanor changed. He could she wasn't gonna support this decision. "Well Charlie...things were bad. That's why I did what I did. Too much pressure, to many arguements..." He paused wondering if he should go on. This was what she wanted right? "You don't know how bad it got when you left. It was...really bad." Things had kept getting worse so he stopped playing football and started doing perscription pills. Alcohol helped him ignore they're parents too. When he was doing the things he was, it was taking him away from his problems. And though he hated to admit it, he had loved those moments...cherished them even. "I gotta get out Charlie. And don't worry. I'm gonna get a job and pay my own tuition and everything. I'll be okay, promise."
Hugging Charlie, made Josh think of the old times. Times when he was just a kid and she would help him when he got hurt. "It's not your fault. No matter what you say...it'll always be my stupidity. It was just pressure. I needed a get away and that was it. I couldn't tell you cause I felt like you couldn't understand. I'm sorry." He exhaled. When Josh realized he had said his thoughts aloud, he knew he had messed up. Charlie was never supposed to find out about Taylor. He was about to tell her no one, but then he realized lying wouldn't be good right now. He let go of Charlie. "Um...Charlie you might wanna sit."

Charlie smiled, letting out another laugh. Maybe this wasn’t going to be an absolute mess after all. Okay so it had its moments, but if they could still joke around like old times then maybe things would be okay, eventually. Charlie knew that there was no way she could totally let herself go with Josh if he refused to tell her the truth about things, it would stay looming over her head. She would blame herself and push him, in turn she knew that Josh would push right back. They were both so stubborn, too stubborn. Listening to her brother, Charlie tried to understand what he was saying. Pressure, she understood that. Their parents were relentless about pressuring them to be better or change themselves or do whatever they thought was socially acceptable. ”I think they pressure you the most Josh because you’re the boy. I know it sounds sexist and maybe it is, but you’re supposed to carry on the North name.” Charlie snickered. Most of the time they fit in with every other normal, middle class family but there were times that Charlie could tell that they were rich, plain and simple. ”Josh I will support you in whatever decide. If you say it’s that bad then I have to believe you. But think about it just one more time for me, please. If you still need to break free from our parents then I will stand beside you. I love you.” Charlie let out a sigh. She didn’t want to see Josh struggle, but she didn’t want to see him so miserable either.
Charlie tried to feel better about things as she hugged her brother, listening to him tell her it wasn’t her fault. She knew better. Charlie should have stayed home or spent more time with Josh, she could have called him more than a few times a week, anything. There had to have been something she could have done, or still do to make this all better. ”Even if you think I won’t understand, try me. You never know Josh and even if I don’t get it, it doesn’t mean that I can’t get it.” Charlie would never judge her brother for the choices he made even if they weren’t the best. Everyone had to make mistakes, hell Charlie had made enough of them in her lifetime. Looking up at her brother a look of confusion fell on her face. ”Sure?” Charlie sat back down in her seat, waiting for whatever explanation her brother was going to give to her.

Josh looked at the happiness on Charlie's face. It was then he felt the most regret for all his bad decisions. He knew there was things Charlie wanted to know. He also knew she only wanted to help. But some things he couldn't bear to tell her just yet. In time he would. He listened to her speak of carrying on the North name. "Bullshit! Even dad doesn't live up to our grandfather's standards. You can never carry the name well no matter what the case." Josh wasn't lying. Their grandfather was strict on rules. He was so sick of the "North" name. He wish he could get rid of it. "I'm pretty sure my mind is made up...but I'll think again just for you." Josh smirked at his sarcasm. He knew there was no way he was changing his mind and so did Charlie. Once Josh had his mind made up there was no changing it.
Josh knew he could trust Charlie. At the time of his probems though, he felt no one could help. He felt he had sunk so low that there was no way he could be saved. As Charlie sat, he took a seat across from her. He never thought he'd have to tell Charlie about Taylor. He sighed and looked at Charlie. "I met someone...in rehab. Taylor is her name. She was there for the same reasons. She helped me and in return I helped her. We also..."went to therapy." " He put air quotes on went to therapy hoping Charlie would understand.

Charlie was beginning to feel a bit more at ease with things between her and Josh. Even if he wasn’t telling her the whole story he was at least starting to act a bit more like, well Josh. She knew whatever had happened had to have been something serious enough to change exactly who he was. Maybe in time he would be able to let her in, at this point Charlie had realized that was all she could do. Hearing her brother, Charlie nodded. She knew that Josh was right. Their grandfather was as pretentious as rich old men could come and the standard that he held for the North name was ridiculous. Maybe that was part of the reason their parents put so much pressure on them, not that it excused it or justified it either. ”You’re right Josh. I can’t argue with you on this one. Grandfather is a…” Charlie stopped, she didn’t want to speak that badly about their grandfather but there was no way to put it nicely. ”Oh fuck it, he’s an asshole.” She smirked at her brother. Shaking her head, Charlie knew Josh had no intentions of thinking it over, but she did appreciate him trying to make her feel better about the situation. ”No you won’t, but thank you for pretending.” She didn’t blame him, she was the same way. Once Charlie had her mind set on something there was very little that could change her mind.
Watching her brother sit across from her, Charlie’s blue eyes looked at him with absolute curiosity for what he was about to tell her. She was pretty sure it wasn’t the truth about what had happened, but whatever it was seemed pretty serious. Charlie listened to her brother closely. He had met a girl, okay. She was in rehab, okay. They helped each other, even better. Her blue eyes widened when Josh said they had gone ‘to therapy.’ Charlie wasn’t completely sure what that meant, but from the air quotes, she was pretty sure there was no therapist involved. ”Okay Josh, tell me we’re not talking about sex.” Charlie blushed. She knew that she was probably the only one of them who was still a virgin which was fine with her, but discussing Josh’s sex life with him was a bit too much.

Josh looked at Charlie as she tried to figure out a word for their grandfather's behavior. He laughed out loud as she came to the perfect conclusion. "Charlotte, was that a curse word I heard you say?" Josh asked, jokingly. He had so much fun picking on her. It was a special brother and sister bond. One he didn't really have with Cadence, but wished they had. Of course, he and Charlie were way too much alike which is why they bumped heads sometimes. Them being alike, though, also had it's perks. They were the greatest friends, they shared everything, they joked on each other, they had fun. "Of course, anything for you." He smiled at Charlie.
Josh felt his sister watching him as he spoke. He had to admit it made him a little nervous. He paused on some words. He watched her facial expressions change as he finished his sentence. She had definitely caught on. "I think you're old enough to understand what I meant." Josh had known going so in depth with the story would be to much for Charlie. But she wanted the details, right? She wanted to know what went on with his life. He exhaled and shook his head, fustrated. "Look, you wanted to know everything so I'm slowly trying to tell you. You wanna hear the story or not?"

A huge smirk fell on her lips as Josh asked her if she said a curse word. It wasn’t often that she actually did swear, unless of course she was mad, then she sounded like a sailor coming into port. Charlie never really felt the need to curse, there were far too many other words in the English language to use that could just as easily gotten her point across, but in the case of their grandfather, well he was an asshole plain and simple. ”Oh shush you. I swear sometimes, granted I’ve usually got to be pushed over the edge, but it seemed fitting.” Sometimes Charlie wondered if their dad had ever tried to break free of their grandfathers insanity. There were always little hints that maybe he had wanted to, but his love for his family always seemed to stop him. Charlie could understand that. It tore her up inside to be such a disappointment to her parents, but at the same time she just couldn’t compromise who she was entirely to please them. ”I do appreciate it, Josh. Just promise me you’ll be honest and tell me when you’re doing things or thinking about them.” Charlie had meant with the emancipation, but it extended to everything, especially if he wanted or felt like using drugs again.
Rubbing her face, Charlie really didn’t enjoy discussing her brothers sexual life. Actually she didn’t feel comfortable talking about anyone’s sexual life. It wasn’t because she basically didn’t have one, it was just a strange topic to discuss. It always made her cheeks turn pink and her stomach flip flop. ”Well duh, I’m older than you are Josh, but I’d hate to assume you’re talking about apples when you’re totally talking about oranges.” Charlie giggled a little. It was the best analogy she could come up with. Hearing his frustration, Charlie looked at Josh with a serious look on her face. ”Of course I want to the story Josh. Don’t get all upset because…just because. I’m not as experienced as you and Cadence in that department, okay.” Sometime she wondered if holding out for Zander had been a big mistake, but she wouldn’t have changed it for the world. Charlie was okay with still being a virgin, even if it meant having her brother and sister look at her like she was insane.

He watched Charlie smirk. He rarely ever heard her curse. Every time she did he found it so funny. He laughed out loud. "Right...calling our grandfather an asshole was the perfect time to use your colorful vocabulary." He laughed at his own sarcasm. But what Charlie had said was true. She only cursed when ever someone pissed her off which was rare. When Charlie spoke again, he knew she sort of understood. He had always been such a disappointment to their parents lately. Not that it mattered to him. Josh smiled and crossed his heart. "I promise. No matter how crazy the ideas that pop in my head...I will always tell you first." He couldn't help, but laugh.
Josh watched Charlie rub her face. He knew this would be hard for her to hear, it was hard for him to tell. He smiled at her, even though this was a serious moment. "Apples and oranges? Really Charlie?" He couldn't help, but laugh at that. Soon after that, the conversation got serious. "Right...well we got really close after that. Things got serious and we sorta became a thing. We helped each other and..." He paused and looked at Charlie. "Things went down at the rehab Charlie that i'm not ready to tell you about. But I saved her and I tried to save her room mate, but I couldn't. You only have a certain amount of authority there. I had enough to keep Taylor out of it, but not enough to protect everyone. Taylor's here. Just don't bring up anything about rehab when you meet her...if I ever decide to let you meet her."

For the first time since Josh walked in the door to the coffee shop, Charlie felt like things had gone back to the way that they normally were. She couldn’t help but worry that at any moment things would go back to being all messed up, but she was trying to remain positive. Charlie knew she had the habit of worrying, of making things seem worse than they really were, but she knew that things between her and Josh were strained and that it could take time for them to go back to normal permanently. ”Hey, just because I totally don’t have the mouth of a sailor at sea doesn’t mean I can’t drop a swear here and there when it’s warranted.” Charlie giggled, smiling at her brother as he crossed his heart. ”Now you know I don’t want to know all of the crazy ideas that pop into that head of yours. Use your inner filter please.” The colorful parts of Cadence and Josh’s brains were things that Charlie could do without knowing about. Even though they were both younger, both of them had far more vivid imaginations and way more experience than Charlie had.
Charlie stuck her tongue out at her little brother. ”Yes, apples and oranges. It’s an analogy, okay?” She shook her head playfully before looking at her brother with a serious face as she listened to him speak. Charlie could feel her face begin to flush as he explained things about this girl. She tried her hardest to remain calm and not over think things, but it was so hard for Charlie when she knew what he was talking about. Thinking about your little brother getting it on with some random girl was not the mental image Charlie wanted to have. Her heart sank when Josh told her that things went down at rehab. She couldn’t imagine what that meant, but she wasn’t going to push it. Josh was opening up and telling her things and she wasn’t going to ruin that with her pushiness. ”Oh if you let me meet her?” Charlie giggled and winked at her brother. ”I would never say anything to her like that Josh. I’m not Cadence, I’m Charlie remember?” Even though both girls were loud and over the top, Charlie wasn’t like Cadence, she wasn’t rude and she didn’t try to make other people feel uncomfortable no matter who they were. Charlie would never judge this Taylor girl for her past, she would give her a fair chance just like she afforded everyone else she met.

Josh laughed. "If you say so Charlotte." He looked at Charlie. She wasn't as out there as him and Cadence, but he knew for sure she wasn't as much of an angel as people thought. He smiled at her. "My inner filter...I'm not so sure I have one of those." Josh laughed. He couldn't help, but joke around with Charlie. It came naturally for him. He was glad things were normal with her. When he first got out, he assumed things would be different. He was glad when he realized they weren't. Of course, though, his imagination was very vivid. He could make up a lie or tell his latest dream or even latest scandal very easily. He wouldn't miss one detail.
Josh shook his head as Charlie stuck out her tongue. He laughed. "Wow. Charlie, you're so child like. Not exactly immature, but you're such a kid inside. You know that?" He smiled. Charlie wasn't what you'd call immature, but she had child like tendacies. He looked at her. "Okay Charlotte. Whatever analogy works for you is fine with me." He laughed just as he face turned serious for their conversation. He rolled his eyes at her comment. "Yes. If. Meaning if me and Taylor agree now is good time for my sister to meet my rehab affair." He inhaled. Josh licked his lips before talking again. "I know you're not Cadence, Charlie. I'm just telling you, okay? Like a warning or something."

Charlie rolled her eyes. Charlotte. That name really was so obnoxious, and why her parents insisted on naming her that was beyond understandable. It was an old lady name, or a snotty girl name, either way neither fit Charlie. She was young, loud and hyper, things she would always be, well young at heart at least. Charlie rolled her eyes at her brother. What was it with the two younger North’s that they didn’t feel the need to censor the stuff that came out of their mouths? Some stuff was just better left unsaid or at least shared with your older sister. ”I honestly don’t know who is worse, you or Cadence.” She thought about it for a second. ”Cadence is definitely worse.” Charlie shuddered. Some of the things that her little sister had said to her was just so over the top that sometimes Charlie wondered if they were made up, at least some of the sexual stuff, not that Charlie had anything to compare her stories to. Even if she had experience, she doubted that any of it would compare to Cadence’s. Charlie just wasn’t that freaky.
She nodded her head, bouncing the rest of her body as she did. Charlie knew exactly what she was like, she wasn’t delusional about her personality. ”Well duh Josh, I do know who I am. And so what if I’m a big kid, I like being this way. I mean why on earth would I want to be an old stuffy person like mom turned out to be?” Charlie swore that when they were little their parents weren’t nearly as uptight about things, but once she started showing any sort of independence it all changed, which probably made things worse for Josh and Cadence. Her blue eyes narrowed slightly as her brother explained himself. If? What the heck was that about? Charlie had never kept anyone she dated a secret, she never hid anything from Josh. Cadence maybe, but never Josh. Her head cocked back as the word warning left her younger brother’s lips. ”Excuse me Josh? I don’t know what the hell has gotten into you, but you don’t need to warn me about anything. I’m not mom, I’m not dad and I sure as hell am not Cadence. You of all people should know that you don’t need to warn me about my behavior. Of all of you, I’m the one with the manners and I know how to treat people fairly and with an open mind, not judge them based on something they hear or even see.” She hadn’t realized it, but her hands were swatting at the air like a fly was buzzing around her. Charlie was annoyed beyond comprehension. ”What the hell did they do to you in rehab that you come out like…this?” The young man she was looking at may have been Josh in body, but the personality just wasn’t matching. Charlie was freaked.
