Memories, something people took for granted not knowing how it would feel to loose them all and be clueless, to have a big black hole where happiness, sadness and so forth used to be, Kyle knew how it felt all to well now and had promised himself to make as many good ones as he could and never to forget them again. The past week has been immensely difficult for him, he had to start re-learning even the most basic things of life and although he spent almost every waking moment on doing so, still had a long way to go. He couldn’t remember the names of the simplest things like trees, clouds, quarries and also couldn’t remember how to drive and until yesterday even how to tie his shoe laces. One thing he could remember though was how to play guitar and according to his mother he was still as good as it as he was before the whole coma ‘thing’. It was not only the small things he forgot though, but also every single event in his past, big things, things that made him, him… Relationships, friendships, family…
It was the bigger things that drove him to return to the school where he spent most of his teenage life, maybe some of the faces or the things in the school would trigger him to remember something. With that in mind he got his mother to drop him off and after promising her he would be careful, he went into the main school building and walked down the hallway, with lockers on either sides of it, covering most of the walls. He had no idea which one of them used to be his, so he looked over each locker carefully, as if his name would be written on it. After many rows of lockers he stood still in front of a particular one and smiled broadly, his initial were carved into the steel, small and neatly along with the year he was a senior ‘J.K. Treger 2009’. He stood there staring at that locker for well over a minute but nothing, not a single thing came back to him, with a sigh he moved on, scoping out everything around him carefully, not even bothering to look where he was going.
The final bell of the day rang and not even a minute later students began filling the hallway, all heading towards heir own personal locker, Kyle did his best to avoid walking into someone as best he could while still looking around but his little effort gave poor results and before he knew it he walked into someone ”Oh damn I’m really sorry…”

TAvalon watched the clock tick by every second for the last thirty minutes of class. It didn't seem like it made it go any slower then it would have if she hadn't been watching it like people said but class itself was already dragging along on its own. She wanted to get out of there and be free for the weekend, she wanted to hurry up and get home so she could get some friends together for a movie that evening. The last bell finally rang and she quickly gathered her things from the small wooden student desk and shoved them in her book bag making her way out the door as fast as the flow of teenagers would carry her.
The halls were packed with people in every direction, the end of the day was usually the hardest time you had getting anywhere during the school day because of all the people moving in every direction with one main purpose. Avalon continued moving through the school in the direction of her locker to grab her jacket and a few things before heading out to the parking lot to find her car. Had the halls been empty she would have already made it there and been out the doors, but the crowds of people made that near to impossible. Taking the last corner before her locker on the right side of the hall someone slammed into her coming from the cross hall and just about threw her to the floor.
Avalon managed to catch her balance before making an even bigger fool of herself my falling on her face. Slightly aggravated she turned around to apologize first to the person she had run into due to the collision, but after watching them spring off again she turned back to the original culprit as he apologized. The voice registered in her mind before she had even turned enough to saw his face, but as she came further around and saw him standing there her phone fell from her hand crashing into the ground below.
When had Kyle got out of the hospital, when had he even woken up. She suddenly felt hurt that no one had told her, but when she had moved on months ago could she really have expected it from them? "Kyle?" she questioned him like she didn't know it was him from the second her heart jumped into her throat. "When did they release you?" Avalon knelt down picking up her phone, the battery, and the backing that had all flown in different directions before standing back up and studying him. He looked more then well for having just woken up after a year, he hadn't really changed at all. Finally realizing that she must have been staring she broke her gaze and started putting the pieces of her cell back together as she waited for a reply , something to keep her busy and her hands moving just as fast as her mind was.

Kyle looked at the girl he had just walked into and for some reason unknown to him his heart started racing, she was beautiful, her long brown hair, her intense eyes, something about her made him feel drawn to her like they were two magnets. Her reaction towards him surprised him a lot, her facial expression changed the moment he spoke and changed again the moment she saw him and seconds later he knew why, she was someone from his past. Who was she? How did they know each other? Could she tell him things his mother wouldn't? All these questions went through his mind in a matter of seconds and he became very excited.
¨Y-you know me? he asked, stuttering slightly and then realized that he had not yet answered her question ¨I've been up and out for about a week now. he answered, smiling broadly, if they were close he didn't know why his mother wouldn't have let her know about him being awake, maybe she just forgot, she had a lot on her mind the last couple of days. Kyle paused for a few seconds, wondering what her reaction would be if she realized he didn't remember her, not sure what to say next ¨Who are you? he then asked impulsively, unable to withhold his curiosity. ¨Do you want to go somewhere and talk? I'm sorry for springing this all on you so suddenly but you have no idea how long I've been waiting to meet someone I knew before the accident, there's so much I need to learn about myself." he started rambling, unable to get his thoughts out in order.
Calm down Kyle, you're going to freak her out. he said to himself, as he looked into her eyes, the longer he stared into them the faster his heart started beating, he figured it was excitement that made his body react this way. He took one deep breath ¨Sorry, got a little carried away" he apologized, and chuckled slightly.

When Kyle had to ask if they had known each other the reality hit Avalon like a ton of hard bricks, he had no idea who she was. She slid her phone back into her pocket once the battery and backing had been replaced and looked back up at him again. She wasn't sure what she had expected, it wasn't like she hadn't just left him there in the hospital months ago, but even if for no other reason's then his own she had hoped his memory would still have been in tact. "I am Avalon, we used to be friends." she said forcing a friendly smile from her lips with the pause, "good friends."
There was no reason for her to say anything more than that. As confused and hurt as she already was with him showing up like this, out of the blue, and unexpected, his next question tore her in two. Taking him somewhere and talking to him, that would be like reopening that door, one she had shut and thought she might never have to re open. How hard would it be for her to tell him all these things, and remain a no body to him still. In her mind though Avalon knew she didn't have an option, if there was anything she could do to help bring him back to who he used to be she would do it in a heart beat. This was the only thing she knew she could do, tell him what he wanted to know, then maybe that would be the end of it again and they could both move on with their lives.
Where to take him wasn't the problem, Avalon could think of a million different places that he loved, stores, parks, restaurants, but she chose instead to take him to the stables. He used to take her there, back when they had first started dating, it was one of her favorite places to go on her own. There she would be able to think, they would be left alone, she could answer whatever questions he had. And if she needed to when it was all over she would go ride, take away some of the stress. "Yeah. I can do that."She told him her voice still unsure. This could go off without a hitch and end really well, or end terribly and which way she felt it was going she wasn't quite sure of yet. The halls now empty she led Kyle out to the parking lot where she had left her car before school that morning and climbed in unlocking the passenger side to allow him to get in.
The car ride seemed to take a lot longer then it did and for more reason then one Avalon kept to herself most the way not really saying much of anything. She figured they would talk plenty when they got to where they were going and she wanted time to think over things in her head, figure out what she would tell him and what maybe she would leave out, if anything. She still hadn't really decided by the time they arrived as she pulled the car up along side the main stable that had all the horses inside. Winging it would be the way to go, she would have to make the decisions as the topics came up and just hope for the best. Shutting off the car she reached in the back taking her student ID from her backpack and shoving it in her pocket along with her phone and keys before climbing out of the car and shutting her door. It was going to be a long day. "This way." she said as she led him around the front and opened up the big doors to let them inside.

Something about how Avalon was acting made Kyle wonder if she was even happy to see him, see seemed nervous and just overall strange, maybe that was how she was, or maybe she was just shocked. It was then when he realized that he wasn’t taking into account how she must be feeling reuniting with his like this, when she thought he was still in la-la land, ”It’s nice to meet you again Ava..." he said with a smile matching hers, just less forced, shortening her name without thinking about it. ”I’m really sorry that we had to meet like this again, but I would’ve let you know I was back in the land of the living if I knew you e….” he trailed off, realizing that what he was going to say would probably hurt her feelings, he didn’t like not knowing her either because he felt an instant connection when he saw her, as if she was a huge part of his life and sub-consciously he knew that.
Kyle didn’t speak as she led him to her car, he just stared at her, fixated by her beauty, wishing that she could’ve been someone he remembered, a flaw in his flaw so to speak. He didn’t really know what to say, it was clear that she was uncomfortable with the whole situation, her voice told him that, but he was hoping things would get better as they got to know each other again, or he got to know her at least, there was nothing wrong with her memory ”I can’t remember how to drive anymore… How much does that suck?” he randomly said while she was on her way to wherever they were going, he didn’t even ask because he honestly didn’t care, he just wanted to be close to someone he knew and know that he had a purpose before the accident, that he had made a difference in someone else’s life. He then pulled his left hand through his hair, which was something he always did, even before the accident, but he didn’t know that.
He looked around when they reached their destination, he knew what it was, he was sure of it, but he just couldn’t remember what it was. He followed her as she led him into a big… Thing… And he found himself surrounded by huge furry animals, ”Oh common! What are they called?... he said to himself out loud, shaking his head, getting extremely frustrated. When he realized that Ava wouldn’t know what he was going on about he faced her and explained ”I can’t remember much of anything.” his frustration and sadness evident in his voice and facial expression ”Mind helping me out?” he asked, feeling a little embarrassed as he hung his head for a few seconds then looked back up at her again when he had the courage to elaborate on his question ”What’s this place called and what are those beautiful creatures?” he asked in a low voice and added on in an almost inaudible whisper ”This is so embarrassing.”
Kyle wasn’t really a shy person and didn’t really let himself get embarrassed easily, but his memory, or lack there off really made him feel really dumb, ”Are you okay?” he then asked her as he sat down on a huge pile of what looked like grass, which he also couldn’t remember what to call. He felt really worried about her now, as if he was making a mistake sort of forcing her to come with him and talk to him, he could’ve given her some time to get over the shock first.

Avalon watched the look on his face as they approached the building and opened the doors. Something short of wonder maybe a bit confused, it was a mixture of different things for the first time since she had met him she couldn't read. As the door swung open she pushed it back to stay there and then walked inside towards one of the stalls at the back of the building. She could hear him talking as he trailed behind her a few feet, asking himself what they were, trying to remember apparently. She stopped in front of the stall and reached through the bars gently running her hand down the horses muzzle when he asked again what it was, this time specifically for her. "A horse."
It hit her in that moment how bad he truly had it since waking up. He didn't just not know who people were, or remember things from his past, he didn't remember simple things like animals, places, things. "We are in the stable where the horses are kept." She wasn't sure how much or little he knew and wondered if she should continue explaining their surroundings to him, but then would he make himself feel worse for her doing so. She opted instead to wait at least for now to see if he asked, maybe it would give her a better feel of what he did and didn't know.
As Kyle sat down on the stack of straw in the corner and asked her if she was okay Avalon suddenly second guessed her original plan of keeping their relationship from him. She wanted him to understand how she felt, why it was so strange but she didn't want him to feel any obligation there. Or feel worse for not knowing who she was anymore. Taking in a deep breath she stepped away from the horse stall and wiped her hands on her jeans taking a seat beside him. "You are asking me if I am okay? You really did get hit in the head." Immediately her eyes squinted and closed as she cursed herself for the momentary lapse of judgment and quick movement of foot to mouth. "I am really sorry. I didn't mean it like that." Her face finally retreated to its natural state as she opened her eyes and turned to look at him again with apology written all over.
"I guess it is just kinda strange to be honest." Avalon shrugged her shoulders not really sure how to be honest without saying to much. "You have been gone for a long time. I guess I just expected things to be the same when you came back. You to be the same. Things wouldn't have been the same, not exactly persay. Their relationship had changed, the school year had ended and started again, people were different. But his memory, of people, and things, places. Memories he had shared with not only her but his friends, those are things most people take for granted, those should have stayed the same.

Kyle smiled when she reminded him of what they were, horses, he knew that they were animals people rode on, he just couldn’t remember what they were named, it was strange how only a bit of his memory about everyday things were missing. He decided to explain it to her, so that she would understand how much of his memories he lost, ”It’s funny how I only forget the names of things, I can tell you exactly what it’s for, but the names are a total blank… It really sucks, makes conversations hard for me sometimes… But I’m getting there.” he said in a neutral tone of voice, he wasn’t really sure if she even wanted to know about these things, but he was making conversation so that was a good thing at least.
”The other day I really embarrassed myself by yelling out quarry when I remembered the name by myself….” he said, laughing at the memory, it was the day he met Merrick, one of his new best friends, ”Got really excited, like a kid who just crawled for the first time. he added with a smile.
He was taken aback a bit by Ava’s reaction to his question, she must’ve really missed him ”I-I’m sorry, didn’t mean to… Offend you in any way… he said, ”It’s okay, I can see how ridiculous that must’ve sounded to you.” He added on when she apologized, he had no idea him being gone would’ve been that bad to her, he knew they were good friends, but still, her reaction suggested that they were much closer than he had thought, he should’ve seen it sooner. Kyle tried fighting the urge to touch her, he wanted to comfort her, make her feel better, but his urge proved stronger than his will so he gave in and put his hand on her shoulder ”I’m really sorry… I don’t like that I had to leave you behind, I have this feeling… It’s hard to explain but, I think I really liked you a lot… I still do.” he said, speaking as he thought it, he really did feel some kind of unexplainable attraction toward her. ”I’ll be the same again soon, I promise, the doctors said anything could trigger it, so I’m trying my best to find that something.” he added, hoping that that would make her feel a bit better.
He then sat there, silently for a few seconds, trying to come up with something to ask or say, so that they didn’t have to sit in silence for too long. He then put his arm around her, gave her a small squeeze and slowly pulled back his arm to his lap, why he just did that, he didn’t know, but he didn’t regret it, not one bit. ”How have your life been, since, you know…? he then asked, looking at her with a curious expression.

Kyle explaining to her a generalization of the things he knew and the things he didn't gave Avalon a much more confident feeling about the things she would be able to say to him. It would make things at least a little less awkward if that was even possible as strange as this situation was. "You didn't offend me." she reassured him, "the question just caught me off guard I guess."
Then came his realization of something being there, something between them and her heart could have jumped out of her throat. She didn't know if it was because she wanted him to remember how he felt for her, or whether she still felt it for him. It could have even just been the want for him to remember anything and not have to feel forgotten. It must have been a strange feeling to have that pull inside of you , to know there is that connection but have no idea why, not a single understanding of what you were feeling. It made her wonder though what that trigger would be for Kyle. It wasn't her, it hadn't been the quarry apparently when he was there the other day. There had to have been something in their life before, more so in his, that would bring something back but that would be something for another time, another day.
Looking from the corner of her eye she saw him move but still managed to be caught off guard as his arm wrapped around her and embraced her for a moment before letting go again. Avalon tried not to feel to awkward to the touch but she didn't want to fall into it either, just to keep herself guarded, and at a safe distance. He looked at her again with questioning eyes as he inquired about how her life had been since the accident. What was she supposed to say? Miserable since you've been gone? That wasn't the answer. That wasn't even the way it should have been really, but instead of answering and facing it head on she pushed herself up out of the hay and walked around him pulling a saddle off the wall. "It has been good. School, life, the usual." How dumb that sounded she didn't really care as long as she had narrowly missed the obvious. Opening the stall door she again patted the horse's muzzle and threw the leather seat on top of a few blankets on his back before leading him out into the long wide hall of the stables. "You wanna ride?" She placed her foot in one of the stirrups and threw her other over the top before removing it again and holding her hand out for his. "You can put your foot in like I just did and climb up behind me. I will take care of everything else, you just have to hold on."

Kyle felt the awkward atmosphere between them intensified a lot after his embrace, so he shifted a little further away from her and folded his hands in his lap Way to go Kyle, try freaking her out more why don’t you he shunned himself as he looked her way, shaking his head slightly ”School, wow, what a foreign concept… I bet it was awesome though… he said with a smile, he had no idea if it was, but he hoped so, he hoped he had been the best friend to her that he knew she deserved, it was strange, he’s only been with her for a bit now but he already felt like he would do anything for her. ”I bet I wasn’t a jock though, I’m not really coordinated enough for sports I think.” he said not knowing that he was one of the best basketball players the school had, the basketball court was the one place he seemed graceful and didn’t spazz out every twenty minutes.
The thought of getting on a horse made him a little nervous, knowing that chances were good that he would do something stupid and fall off, and he didn’t think hurting himself was a good idea at this time, Ava would probably not like that one bit. ”Sure, sounds like fun…” he then said as he got up, unable to refuse her. Carefully he got onto the horse and settled himself in behind her on the saddle, ”Where do I hold on?” he asked, hesitant to put his arms around her fearing that it would make her feel uncomfortable, which would be normal, she hadn’t been in close proximity to him in a year, give or take a few months, so he could see how it would be strange for her. ”Did we do this a lot before? Somehow I don’t see me being a great rider. he asked and chuckled a bit, he was right, he wasn’t a great rider, he fell off a lot back in the day, but eventually he would get it right and would be able to keep up with her if she held back a little.

"You were a jock actually believe it or not," Avalon told him as she scooted forward to let him climb up behind her. "You played basketball, one of the best." It didn't take long for him to climb up and when he asked where to put his hands she carefully reached back with her own to take them and place them on her hips. She didn't mind if he reached around, it made some people feel safer. Others just simply needed a place to put them and keep them out of the way. "You can put them here, or you can wrap your arms around me. Whatever makes you more comfortable." She waited patiently for a moment as he picked a spot and then found her feet into the stirrups again before carefully walking the horse out of the stables. There didn't seem to be any other cars around so they were alone in the fields and she took off in a dead sprint. She loved riding horses, they were graceful, and beautiful. When you got going fast enough it could actually feel like you were floating on air.
Avalon slowed down after a few minutes again to a slow canter as she answered his questions. "We didn't do it a lot, but a few times. It wasn't your favorite thing to do but it is one of mine. It was honest enough, but maybe she shouldn't have mentioned it. She was now second guessing telling him they rode horses together wondering if it implied too much of their relationship, again it was too late. Instead of trying to move the subject or get the focus off them she stayed silent instead just riding and enjoying the cool breeze that blew across her face as they ran and walked through the fields. She had been out here a lot since the accident, her and the horses had grown pretty close since she didn't have a whole lot else keeping her occupied. She had never been a person to stay couped up in the dorms for long.
The ride was mostly for enjoyment and they both stayed quiet for the hour or so they were out. Avalon brought the horse slowly back into the stable and dismounted allowing him the chance to come down after her before starting to unsaddle the horse and put him back in the stall with fresh water and hay for the night. Grabbing a few sugar cubes she patted the animal and gave him a treat before shutting the door and locking him in. "You ready to head out?" The sun was going down, they had been there longer then she originally thought and honestly she hadn't managed to answer very many questions but there would be the ride back to town for that if there were any more. Otherwise there would be other times. She led him back out of the building and shut the lights down before swinging the giant door closed again and making their way around to her car. "Did you want me to take you back to the school or just go ahead and take you home?" He didn't drive so she had been assuming home but he could have had other places to go so she asked to make sure. Starting the car up she gave it a second before pulling back out onto the road and watching the stables disappear in the rear view mirror, one more memory to add to her past.

”Well I’ll be dammed…” Kyle joked in a Southern accent,. ”Little old me, a basketball star.” he added in the same accent followed by a slight chuckle, he could hardly believe it but did since it came from her, every fiber of his being believed that she of all people would never lie to him, it was a strange feeling how much he trusted her from the get go, even though he couldn’t remember her at all, it was as if he was emotionally linked to her despite his lack of memories of being close to her before his accident. When she took his hands he felt them tingle, as if a small spark was sent from her hand to his and when she put them on her hips he looked down at them, frowning, what the hell was going on with him was beyond him. ”This is fine thanks… he said just before she let the horse walk out of the stable.
”I think the only reason I didn’t like it so much was because I got nervous about falling off… he said looking down at the ground from up on the horse, the distance wasn’t much but he wouldn’t want to fall that far anyway, especially not when the horse gathered a bit of speed. The wind and the speed of the horse all combined proofed to be an exhilarating experience, he looked around as Ava took the reigns, the world was such a beautiful place to him, he couldn’t imagine not being in it again. He tightened his grip around her small hips slightly the faster they went, this was the most fun he had had since waking up, his mother wouldn’t let him do something even remotely dangerous these days, climbing on a ladder to get his box of old things out of the top of his huge cupboard was apparently too risky for him and his mother made his father promise to get it out for him as soon as he had time to. Kyle wondered about what was in that box, it was as if they were stalling and didn’t really want him to see the contents.
When they got back to the stables he got off the horse and being the gentleman that he was and have always been, helped Ava off as well. He silently watched her as she put the horse back, he didn’t want to ruin this moment with her by saying something stupid, he would much rather just stare at her, he had no idea why he couldn’t keep his eyes off of her, sure she was beautiful, but he didn’t have this same problem with Merrick, who was also a very beautiful girl ”Yeah sure, it’s getting late, my mom is probably worried sick… he said which is when he remembered he forgot to text her to tell her he was okay, ”Oh shit, she’s going to put me back into that coma… he said as he quickly took his phone out of his pocket on the way to Ava’s car, three missed calls and one text message, he read the message out loud, “Kyle, where the hell are you? Please let me know if you’re ok. – Mom”
He quickly replied to his mom’s message, telling her he was okay and that he would explain when he got home then put his phone back into his pocket of his faded blue jeans. The white shirt he was wearing got a little dirty at the stables, but he was sure his mom wouldn’t mind the dirt as long as he wasn’t hurt. ”Oh, home please… But I bet you already figured that out.” he said with a smile as he looked out of the car window, it was the same road his mom took when she took him to school. ”Thanks a lot for today; I took it over without even considering that you might’ve had plans.” he said apologetically as they drew closer to his house, ”I didn’t even get to ask you much… But I guess there’ll be time for that later, if you’re up for it.” he added, trying not to pressure her into anything, in case she didn’t want to be his ‘guide to the past’ so to speak.
As she drove on further, Kyle looked at her lips and his lips came apart slightly, the urge he had to kiss her goodbye was overwhelming and once her car came to a stand still in front of his house and she turned her head toward him, he gave in to that urge, Kyle acted on impulse often, it was something that got him into trouble a lot, he was sure. He reached out and put his hand on her cheek and brought his face closer to hers, going in for the kiss he wanted so badly.

A small laugh left Avalon's straight stature when Kyle mentioned his mother would put him back into a coma after not being home when he was expected. When he pulled out his phone she was certain that he probably had a few messages from her and his fingers moving rapidly over the keyboard implied he was texting her back. His mom was usually pretty laid back but she couldn't imagine how she was with him only having been back for a week, the fear of something happening to him again was probably overwhelming. Just like anything else though she would have to eventually let it go, he needed to be able to breathe and live life again, it was too short to waste.
Avalon looked over at him for only a second when he thanked her for spending the time with him that afternoon. She didn't so much have plans as plans to make plans, if that made any sense at all. Sitting around the dorms wasn't her idea of fun and on a Friday afternoon she did her best not to be stuck there. This had been an awkward day, that was for sure, but she didn't regret saying yes. It was nice even for her to see that he was okay, and he would be okay no matter what happened from this point on out. She had to realize the seriousness of the matter and the decisions about whether or not to stay involved she would have to make now. He would obviously be okay since he had no recollection of who she was before today, but she needed to preserve herself as well. "It was fun. I haven't been to the stables in a while so you gave me an excuse." She turned the last corner before his house that was just up the street as he mentioned the lack of questions he had answered. Part of her felt that was her fault after dodging the first major one and getting him on the horse, but then again, she would have just walked it out had he asked anything else while they were riding. "There will be plenty of time for you to ask questions, don't worry about it." Pulling up in front of his house for the first time in almost a year was sort of a strange feeling. Avalon put the car in park and glanced at the house for a second looking to see if his mother was watching out any of the windows, that would be awkward to explain if she called or approached her about it. No sign of her anywhere though, or she was hiding well.
If he had given her some sort of hint of what was about to come she had totally missed it. Avalon turned her head towards him to say goodbye yet again and his attempt for a kiss came out of the blue as he reached up to her face to pull her in. She closed her eyes bracing herself for the moment, the emotions it might fuel in her, anything she may or may not feel, but part of her was screaming warnings, begging her not to do it. The moment moved like it was in total slow motion as his hand alone sent shivers through her body, and she moved closer to the inevitable kiss. Inevitable that was until she reached her hand up to cover his and turned her head slightly to the side dodging it. "I am sorry. I can't right now Kyle.
It wasn't because she was seeing someone else because even though she had been on dates technically she wasn't seeing anyone. Her hopes were that he would understand, Avalon was confused, she knew that putting herself in that position was compromising and letting her guard down and she just couldn't do that yet. He was the same Kyle, but not. She opened her eyes again and looked at him so close to her face feeling the same pull he probably had before taking the dive in to kiss her. It was hard to ignore but she had to. "I will talk to you later?" She questioned him trying to change the mood as she pulled back from his grasp again reaching over to unlock the door.

Her turning down the kiss was to be expected, according to her they were just friends and friends didn’t kiss friends, so the fact that he tried to kiss her was a stupid move. ”I’m sorry, sometimes I things impulsively and I’m not really sure what’s going on with me today…. Sorry. he said as his face turned a light shade of crimson, yes he was embarrassed, but not at all angry at her for rejecting him. What made his suspicious was her saying that she couldn’t ‘right now’, what exactly that meant he didn’t know, did she lie to him when she said they were just friends? Were they more than that? Friends with benefits maybe? ”Yeah… Uh yeah, later then… Bye.” he said awkwardly as he got out of the car and headed to the front door of their house, looking back when he reached it and waved goodbye to her before going inside the house.
His mom was sitting on the couch in the living room, obviously waiting for him, but what surprised him was that she didn’t seem angry, she was smiling broadly ”I was wondering were you were, but I’m so happy you remember now! she said as she jumped up from her seat and hugged him ”You two were so in love, I should’ve known she would be the trigger that helps you remember.” she added as she retreated, she was about to say more but when she saw Kyle’s dumbfounded facial expression she didn’t ”What? Wait, she said we used to be… Oh my God, that’s why she was acting so strangely… Mom, I don’t remember anything yet.” he said, totally taking aback ”I can’t believe she didn’t tell me, I mean, she could’ve just said something… Why didn’t she? She must not feel the same anymore, I would’ve understood….” he began rambling, pacing the room, that explained why he felt so attracted to her, he used to love her and the way his body reacted meant that somewhere in his subconscious mind he probably still did…. If only he could remember.
Kyle’s mom just watched Kyle as he walked back and forth from the coach to the front door, mentally kicking herself for jumping to such conclusions in the first place. Kyle then turned his attention back to his mother and one could see by the look on his face that he was clearly very angry at her. ”Why didn’t you tell me?!” he asked loudly, ”What else are you hiding from me mom? he added, his heart racing and his hands shaking. ”I’m sorry Kyle, I didn’t want you to get hurt son, that’s all… I’m really sorry.” she replied as she broke out in tears.
Kyle watched his mother cry and couldn’t believe that he just spoke to her like that, what was he thinking, of course she was trying to protect him, he was a bit pissed at her of course, but she was his mother, no one should treat their mother the way he just did, even though he couldn’t remember anything she ever did for him, he was sure that she did a lot ”I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to make you cry mom. he said as he wrapped his arms around her and let her cry on his shoulder for a while.
He stood like that for about a minute, going over everything that happened today and how it all made more sense now, he couldn’t believe she lied to him like that, he thought he could trust her, he felt like that from the moment they started talking in the stables. As he thought about Ava’s betrayal he became angrier with her by the second and when his mom backed up and sat down on the coach he knew what he was going to do now, ”Mom, please give me her number…. he said as he took out his brand new cellphone and handed it to him mom, his mom said nothing, she just pressed a few buttons, saving Ava’s number on his phone and then gave it back to him, giving him an apologetic look as she did so. ”I’m going to my room mom, I need to think… Love you.” he said and gave her a kiss on the cheek before heading upstairs.
Kyle’s room was left exactly the way it was before his accidents, his walls were red, his bunk bed’s frame black and posters of various bands and cars, next to his bed was a table with his computer and just across from that, on the other side of the room was a couple of shelve filled with books and other small things. When he entered his room he immediately climbed onto the top bunk of his bed and lied down, then started typing a message on his phone for Ava,
‘I can’t believe you didn’t tell me, seriously, I would’ve understood that you didn’t feel the same anymore… Instead you made me look and feel like even more of an idiot. Thanks a lot. Don’t even bother replying, I’m not interested since you’re not.’ he then chucked the phone angrily off the bed once he sent it turned on his side and closed his eyes, wishing with all his might that he would be able to fall asleep.
