Lainy threw her towel onto the sand and stared out at the ocean. It looked like summer was over and fall had begun. The mist of the ocean blew over to her and she shivered. Yes, the water would be freezing today.
She sucked in her breath and ran at full speed toward the water. She figured she might as well start adjusting as soon as possible. She threw herself into an oncoming wave.
Okay, so maybe it was really cold water.
The wave dragged her under immediately, so she twisted to maneuver herself so she could kick up for more air. She had been swimming as a sport since she was seven, yet she still couldn't hold her breath very long. This didn't seem to improve as she got older and better at the sport.
She kicked her legs upward in a fierce motion, stretching her upper body up so her head would break the waves. She took a huge gasp of air before another frigid wave crashed over her. The cold stunned her for a few seconds, but the undertow pulling her away from shore snapped her back into action. She used her arms and legs to help her pierce through the cold waters surface.
Crap, she thought. The undertow had taken her further than she'd expected. Her fingers felt frozen and she knew her lips were purple. Another wave swept her halfway under, her left arm and head still above water.
Why was she such an idiot? She wondered. Strong swimmer or not, petite with huge waves was never a good idea. She wondered how long it would take her to swim back to shore in these conditions.
