Tapping her fingers on the table, Jordan stared out at the ocean. She was meeting Daniel on the pier for a fun afternoon of fries, games, and rides. Jordan had always loved the pier. It was such a fun place to be, and it never changed. The rides and games were the same rides and games she had ridden and played when she was four and her father first took her to the pier. She grimaced, remembering the day clearly. It was the first day she had truly begun to understand that her brother hated her.
Flashback fourteen years, and there was little Jordan. Her daddy had her on his shoulders, and Jordan was pointing at a game where you shoot ducks and win prizes. She remembered her then-seven year old brother grabbing her dad's hand and instead leading them to a booth where you could get your picture taken. Mr. Thomas took Jordan off his shoulders so he could duck into the booth. Pouting because she didn't get her way, Jordan tried to climb into the booth with them, but her brother pulled the curtain closed before she could. From outside the booth she heard her dad say, "Now was that very nice?" and she heard her brother say, "Girls like her don't deserve to get their pictures taken."
Remembering this, Jordan worked to hold back a tear that was trying to work it's way out of her eye. It killed her that her family was so torn, each member like their own separate family. Jordan straightened up. It was okay. She had an amazing boyfriend, and he was on his way now. Maybe today would finally be the day he popped the question. After all, she really couldn't have been more obvious than the Kay Jeweler's catalogue she had left open to the most gorgeous-yet simplistic-diamond ring the last time she had been in his apartment.
"Wouldn't that look pretty on me?" Jordan remembered saying, holding up the page with the ring that was nothing but a sterling silver band with a .25 carat round diamond on it. It was only four hundred dollars. She didn't expect him to go all out with a twenty five hundred dollar ring. All she wanted was a pretty, inexpensive engagement ring and a nice, small wedding on the pier.
And still, no ring. But today. Today would surely be the day.
