Tori was sick of New York. She was sick of crowded subway cars, noisy streets and cramped apartments. She was sick of her ritzy private school, of the same obnoxious girls she had seen every day since kindergarten. She was sick of living with her mother and father, living her life according to their rules and expectations.
But mostly, she was sick of her sisters.
Lena, Tori’s beautiful eighteen year old sister, was in her first year at Columbia. She excelled in all of her classes, was the president of a number of clubs on campus, and dated a gorgeous up-and-coming artist. Keira, who was 14, had skipped 2nd grade back in elementary school. Even though everyone else her age was in 8th or 9th grade, the precocious little Keira was in 10th.
Tori was a good student—she usually got As and a few Bs—but she would never have a 4.0 GPA like Keira. Tori was attractive, but she would never be nearly as beautiful as Lena. No matter how hard she tried to make herself stand out, Tori would always be “Lena’s little sister” or “Keira’s older sister.” She was never just Tori.
But in Jacksonville, New Jersey, no one knew Keira and Lena. Tori’s parents didn’t live there, so they wouldn’t be around to compare her to her sisters. At boarding school, she could start over. She could be the person she had always wanted to be.
“This is the first day of the rest of my life,” Tori murmured as she approached the gates of Jackson High. “No one knows me now, but soon, everyone here will know my name.”
