Kait didn't know why it always took her so long to pack when she went home. It wasn't as if she needed a lot of clothes, or anything; the whole point of visiting her parents was to have a simple, family-related time, which called for simple, family-related outfits. However, her parents enjoyed surprising Kayla and Kait, which meant they had to be ready for anything. And being ready for anything, at least as far as Kait was concerned, meant trying to stuff as much clothing as possible into one small suitcase. If she could have it her way, she would bring her whole closet home with her every time she visited, but she doubted her parents would be very pleased with such an arrangement. Besides, her closet would not fit her adorable new car. Amazingly, her and Kayla hadn't had many fights concerning their gift. Kait hadn't thought it was possible, but it seemed her and her twin had grown up since the early years of anti-sharing.
Finally deciding she wouldn't be able to fit another shoe into her suitcase, Kait set about zippering the bulging thing. It wasn't an easy job; she had to sit on top of it and literally force it down, then yank it closed and hope to God she hadn't got anything caught in its metal teeth. She'd ruined one of her favourite shirts by doing that, once, and didn't wish to repeat the mistake. She fell back onto her bed, catching her breath, quite pleased with herself. She still felt like she was forgetting something, but she would have to make do. Besides, she could always convince her mom to take her last-minute shopping if there was something she absolutely required. It had happened before.
"Kayla, are you ready?" she called, not bothering to get up and hunt her sister down. Kait had thought that, after Giovanna skipped town and Kayla and Bree had managed to talk at their party, Kayla's mood would have improved. And, fortunately, she wasn't quite as moody and upset as she'd been before all of that. But the old Kayla wasn't back yet. It was almost as if they were living in a cheap reality television show, where nobody could ever be happy no matter how hard they tried or how much they deserved it because God forbid the devoted audience be let in on the secret that the cast was just like them. If it wasn't one thing, it was another. Kait just wanted to focus on fashion... and Chris. She smiled at the thought of him. At least she had her British beau to cheer her up, even if Kayla, for whatever reason, disliked him.
"Kayla?" Kait called again, sitting up and lifting her suitcase. She stepped out into the main part of their dorm, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear and grabbing her coat. "If we don't get there before ten mom's going to worry," she reminded her sister. Then, she grabbed the keys, slipping on her shoes. "Do you want to drive? Or should I?" Kait didn't care. She just wanted to get going.
tag Kaylaaa notes It's a bit short, but I wanted to get the ball rolling quick (: I put it in here, since I figured the crash would happen outside of Jville. I guess we can move it to the hospital or something later, but whatever.

Kayla had been packing, but she hadn’t taken as long as Kait who usually took the longest. Through the summer, Kaitlyn had been one of the people she had spoken to constantly. It was sad that she hadn’t seen any of her three besties but she hadn’t wanted to see many people and had been selfish....basically she had been a bitch. She was ashamed of the way she had been, but this was a new year and she was trying to make it better, so far it didn’t seem like it was getting any better. She had been packing in Kait’s dorm, basically because it kind of made sense. She had thought that they were just taking one suitcase between the two of them, but Kait had already filled hers, so she’d had to pack herself which wasn’t even half full since she didn’t see the point in packing half the amount of clothes her sister had done. Kayla liked to keep things simple and not be over the top with things, sometimes Kait could be like that, but it was one of those things she had learnt to deal with. Despite their differences they did have a few similarities, though neither of them would probably admit to it, especially Kayla because she was stubborn and she liked to be individual. It wasn’t something they argued about though, Kayla loved her sister and she wouldn’t change her for anything, though she knew that she herself had changed over the summer, and she wasn’t really happy with those changes. Somewhere there was the old Kayla, but she needed to resurface 100% and be like she was before to make her truly happy, but for that she needed to be the one to do that, it was no use anyone else doing it.
Yeah yeah I’m ready she said tiredly. Usually it was herself that asked that question. She got up and looked at her sister. Its only nine, we’ll make it she said and tutted slightly. Of course that would mean that they had to drive in the dark, they hadn’t had all that much experience doing that, not that she was nervous, she wasn’t even thinking that, but of course she was wanting to drive. Mom worries anyway, we can ring her to tell her we’re on the way if your that bothered. she told her and picked up her suitcase. I’m driving she said taking the key as she put her suitcase down for a second. She grabbed the keys from her sister then pulled her case out of the dorm. She hated how the nights were getting dark, in the summer, it would have still been light out right now. But nooo, winter had to happen and it was fairly cold too, which didn’t help Kayla’s mood. She didn’t really know why she was being moody, she figured it was just PMS or something, but it wasn’t like it was that rare for her to be like that, her sister was probably quite used to it, but that didn’t make it right. She often took it out on someone else when she was like that and this time Kait would be the one to get the stick which wasn’t really very fair, but that was what she was like.
They pulled their suitcases to the car, and Kayla put them both in the boot. She wasn’t going to be completely unreasonable, if she just put her own in that would have just been spiteful, she wasn’t going to be mean like that, it was just childish, even though some things she did anyway, were childish. She got in the front seat and turned the engine on, the radio came on with some R&B tune. That’s enough of that she said turning it onto MCFLY’s new CD, ‘If U C Kate’ came on. Aww they wrote a song about you....its not spelt the same way though she laughed. So....speaking of mcfly...well McFLY related, are you and whatshisface still together? she asked. You know, I REALLY don’t get what you see in him, he is so pompous. she said shaking her head. Just the way he talks makes me want to strangle him. she said casually, like it was no big deal that she was slagging off her sisters boyfriend.

Kait ignored the uninterested tone of Kayla's voice, focusing instead on her newly-manicured nails. Having Chelsea around was amazing, and she was glad to have someone she could do everything with again after her falling out with Gio. And after Kayla's dramatic attitude change. Unfortunately, Chelsea couldn't just up and come with her all the time, so Kait would be doing her best to deal with her moody sibling for the next two days. But maybe being away from the school would make her sister feel better.. one could hope. "I know, I know," she sighed in reply to her twin's reminder. She just felt on edge, for some reason, and the sooner they arrived in New York the better. She frowned at Kayla's apparent lack of concern over their mother's feelings. "Well, it's her job, she's our mom." However, she decided to refrain from calling until they were actually late. Their parents already knew they were coming - they didn't need to be told again.
"Alright," Kait shrugged, handing over the key and following her sister out the door before locking the room behind them. Briefly, she wondered if she shouldn't have left a note for Chelsea to remind her where they were going. Hopefully her friend would have enough sense to remember that this was a Todd Family Weekend. Then again, there were things called cell phones which modern people used to communicate. Upon realizing this, Kait wondered why she'd even considered writing anything down in the first place. Probably because it was more personal. Not that Chelsea ever thought about such things. In fact, she wouldn't even see the note unless it was fluorescent pink and the size of a door. As they walked up to the car, Kait forced herself to stop thinking about giant pink sticky notes. She had been feeling off ever since Kayla arrived - the whole twin feeling thing sucked sometimes, especially when one of them was in a bad mood. She did manage a smile when Kayla took her suitcase and got it into the back - at least her sister was trying to be polite.
Sliding into the passenger seat, Kait laughed at Kayla's comment, shaking her head. "Hey, I love me some good R&B," she joked, fastening her seatbelt. As Kayla turned the sound, inevitably, to McFly, Kait rolled her eyes. "I swear, I'm slowly learning all of their songs by heart." She was quite pleased to hear that there was a song with her name in it, though; it almost made her feel special, until Kayla informed her it that it was spelled differently. "You should still be jealous," she reminded her. However, all attempts at pleasant conversation faded when Kayla brought up Chris. Or, as her twin so kindly put it, 'whatshisface.' "Chris? Yeah, we're still dating.." she drifted off, trying desperately to think of some way to change the subject. Her brain supplied nothing. Her scowl deepened.
"How many times do I have to tell you, he's not pompous! It's just his accent. You're the one who's all into British guys, McFly or whatever. You should know that," Kait huffed, glaring out her window. As Kayla continued, however, she turned her gaze on her sister. "And I want to strangle you right now. Why can't you just lay off? I don't go on about my opinion of Aidan every time I talk to you. Can't we talk about something besides my love life for a change?" Kait could feel her face flushing with anger. Nobody knew how to push her buttons like Kayla, and she was instantly less and less excited about the drive ahead of them. Short as it was, it wouldn't be over soon enough.

Well then, stop your worrying, jeez she rolled her eyes slightly. Like Kaitlyn wanted Chelsea with her, Kayla kind of wished that she had Aidan with her for the drive, but this time they couldn’t come with them, so it was just the girls, which she would have to deal with and be nice to her sister, not that she wasn’t nice, but she was feeling particularly moody, and she didn’t even know why. She used to hate when she was moody, now it was quite common. It was something she’d developed over the summer and hadn’t yet shifted. Yeah well, we’re seventeen and at boarding school, she doesn’t need to worry all the time she pointed out. That was how Kayla felt anyway. She didn’t want her mom to worry, just because it seemed like she was a kid. Now at seventeen she was almost a legal adult and her mom still worried? What Kayla didn’t realise was that mothers always worried. No matter what age their ‘children’ were. It was just something that they would always do, because they cared and not because they wanted to annoy their children. And that was what Kayla did not get. It was an instant reaction and not something that their mother could really control. But of course Kayla thought it was just something to annoy her. Along with being moody, she had become a little stuck up and self involved, she knew herself that she needed to change, but what she really needed was a kick up the ass to get her act together and be how she used to be. She remembered having such fun with her sister, now it seemed like they bickered a lot more and she hated that. The whole summer had changed her, and she wanted to be like her old self.
So, did you tell Chelsea you will be away this weekend? Kayla asked. Remember what happened last time, when she called the police and had a search party for us? She woke up half the school to help look for us, it was insane. I know you love her, but do you ever feel like her stupidness is like, rubbing off on you? she asked and tilted her head to the side laughing. She didn’t realise just how hurtful some of her comments were, but surely Kait wouldn’t be THAT upset over that? It wasn’t even about her. When Kait said that she liked R&B, Kayla just gave her a look and sighed. Well...tough she said with a shrug. Like she was going to give in this time, plus she knew that her sister was joking, so it wasn’t like she was being that big a bitch anyway. Well good, because you’ll probably have to go to their consert she smirked. Oh my god that is going to be amazing! she squealed and took her eyes of the road for a second, as she did, she swerved slightly. woops! she laughed, she was being so care free, acting like nothing was a big deal when it was. Jealous? Hellooooo Danny and Harry wanted to go on a date with Bree and I, I don’t think I can be jealous of the fact that they wrote a song about you. she laughed. Spelled differently makes all the difference...though it should so be called If You See Kayla shouldn’t it? Then she shook her head, That was a joke she said. Ohhh great....good for you she said when she was still dating Chris. Good to know your still going strong she said pulling a face. Ew...was what she was really thinking, she just did not like the guy.
Oh he’s not? Like really? she shook her head. You are so naive Kait, either that or he’s been feeding you lines and you believe him. I don’t know which is worse. I mean come on, who buys a designer purse for someone they hardly know for a birthday present. Mom and dad would never buy a seventeen year old a designer purse, you know that Kait. she said turning to look at her every so often. they always said that if we wanted the expensive designer stuff we had to earn it ourselves. You know, get a job? she shook her head. Chris is such a brat, he gets everything from mommy and daddy, while we, get a small amount of cash to live off for a month, and I am getting a job she went on . Okay maybe she was slightly jealous of his wealth, and that definitely showed. Their family weren’t majorly rich, but not poor either but their parents had worked so hard to get where they were now, and she was proud of them for that. She saw Chris’s family who had been wealthy a long time, and his mother, didn’t even have to work, he just all round irritated her. I still think he wanted something from you for that purse, I looked it up online, they are like $1500 she said. And not all British guys talk like that, its only Harry that does...well that is obvious why...and the rest of them speak normally. she said moodily. Your opinion of Aidan? You have known him for years, and Chelsea is your best friend, as if you have a bad opinion of him she scoffed. So really, it’s like you’re just using him because he’s like super rich...maybe he’ll buy and name an exotic island after you for Christmas? she said with a snarky smile and laughed. It’s like, people will start to see you as a golddigging whore Kait...do you really want that reputation....I mean you kinda are...what else has he bought you recently? A wallet to go with the purse? she questioned.

Kait frowned when Kayla told her to stop worrying. It wasn't her fault she cared about her parents, and she certainly couldn't just turn that off whenever she felt like it. Fortunately, she was smart enough to keep from speaking her opinions aloud. Things were tense enough as it was. "When we're fifty and she's a little old lady, she'll worry about us. Good luck trying to change that," she retorted, giving herself a once-over in the mirror. So what if they were going straight from their dorm to their house? She wanted to look presentable. It was kind of her thing. She turned to glance at her twin, raising an eyebrow as Kayla recalled the last time they'd gone home for a weekend without Chelsea's knowledge. A scowl tugged the corners of her mouth downward at her sister's final comment, and she spoke her next words with a decided degree of sharpness. "Well, it's not her fault I didn't tell her. It's good that she cares enough to come looking for me if I do go missing. And I don't think stupidness can rub off on people, anyway. Besides, she's smart in her own way." Great. Just when Kait was beginning to think the ride home might be tolerable, Kayla had to go and run her mouth again. Sometimes she wondered if the two of them were even related at all.
"Anyway, I'll text her now." Kait slid open her phone, finding an excuse to ignore her sister for a few moments while she typed up a quick reminder to her friend. Unfortunately, it only took about ten seconds. And then they were at the car. She half hoped Chelsea might text her back straight away, but for whatever reason the girl didn't respond. It looked like Kait was going to be alone in this. "It's nice to know you care," she rolled her eyes. Even joking around with her sister was annoying tonight. When Kayla mentioned the concert, Kait suppressed a groan, slumping down in her seat. "Can't Bree go with - what are you doing?!" Her hand shot out to grip the door handle as Kayla swerved, and she glared at her sibling. "Can you focus on the road instead of your obsession with some stupid boy band? I don't feel like dying tonight, believe it or not," she complained grumpily, settling uneasily back into a less shocked position. As Kayla continued going on about McFly, Kait let out a long breath. "Ohmigod, I totally forgot about that! They're soo sexy, I'm incredibly jealous," she gushed sarcastically, then allowed herself a laugh. "Well, you'd probably appreciate 'If U C Kayla' more than I appreciate 'If U C Kate.' They didn't even spell my name right. And I'm not their number one fan."
Kait smoothly ignored Kayla's expression as she talked about Chris, staring coldly out the window. She got that her sister didn't like her boyfriend, but she didn't exactly like Aidan, either. And she had a reason; if he was too stupid to know that Gio was a lying bitch, then he was too stupid to be worth her sister's time, and that was that. "Yeah 'like really,'" she shot back angrily, getting quite tired of their conversation. "I'm not naive, you just think you know everything about everybody. I don't know why you're still going on about that purse." At Kayla's comment about their parents, Kait's frown deepened. "What? What have Mom and Dad got to do with this? Oh, they wouldn't buy me a purse, so nobody else should? You seem pretty fine with the fact that they bought us this car, and I'm sure it cost way more."
If she tried hard enough, Kait would be able to remember a time when her and Kayla had gotten along incredibly well. However, those times were far from her mind as they sped along the road. She was far too worked up over her sister's heartless slander of Chris to try to remember all the good, happy times they'd had in the past, or to even consider Kayla's motives. "Should I return every birthday present, just because I didn't buy it myself? And in case you've forgotten, I've been working for the past two summers. There just isn't much of a fashion scene in Jacksonville." Kait didn't quite understand the point Kayla was trying to make. "Oh, as if he can help that he was born into a wealthy family. I know for a fact that if you had that kind of wealth you wouldn't mind flaunting it," she wasn't entirely sure whether that were true, but she didn't care: most of what Kayla was saying had been ridiculous and meaningless, anyway.
"Well, he didn't get anything for the purse and he's still here, so either he's incredibly stupid or he actually does care about me and the purse was just a nice gesture. And you don't hate Harry, do you? They're from the same family, but for some reason Chris is a stuck-up leech and Harry's super awesome? That doesn't even make sense." Kait paused, taking in a breath, positively fuming. When Kayla questioned her ability to have a bad opinion of Aidan, Kait couldn't help but let another outburst take her over. "Well, I used to think he was a good guy, but now I don't know. I mean, if he's so great, why did he believe Gio? If he cared about you so much, why did he have sex with her? Why did he leave you? And, if he's so awesome, why did he do this to you? Before all that shit that happened with him, I could actually have a conversation with you without having to worry about getting into a huge fight!" Kait could feel tears springing to her eyes, but apparently Kayla wasn't done. To be perfectly honest, she was on the verge of leaping over into the drivers' seat and settling it all right there, right then.
"You, of all people, should know that I'm not a golddigging whore! He hasn't bought me anything else, just took me out to dinner. But everyone takes their girlfriends out to dinner!" Maybe not at the View, but there was no way Kait was letting that one slip. Of course, Kayla probably already knew. She knew a hell of a lot for a person who didn't give a shit. "At least I'm not pathetic and lonely enough to go crawling back to some guy who gave me up for my worst enemy the minute he got a chance. At least I've managed to hold onto my integrity. Think about that before you start going on about how I have no self-respect." Kait knew that was a low blow. Right under the belt. But she was tired enough of Kayla's constant insults that she felt it was time for her twin to get a taste of her own medicine.
ooc ohmigod. I was watching TV, and there was this really epic scene, and it just gave me hella muse. Your post pretty much did the rest XD Kayla really knows how to piss Kait off lmao.

Well she doesn’t have to care so damn much, it is like we can’t do anything on our own sometimes Kayla sighed. Okay so she really didn’t feel that way at all, she loved her mother deeply and was actually glad that she cared so much. There were some parents who didn’t care at all and she would have hated that, half because she liked the attention, and also because it would just suck having parents who didn’t care. She was really lucky in that respect because having parents who didn’t care would have sucked, and she knew that. She got on well with her parents, despite the fact that they seemed to praise Kaitlyn more, she was the academic twin, Kayla was more interested in drama and sports, she was good doing that though so to her she liked to concentrate on it, rather than focusing more on something she was bad at. She was passing with average grades in most of her classes so that was one thing. The only class she was failing was history, but she had basically bribed the teacher of bumping her grade to a C anyway. She could have gone for an A, but that would have looked suspicious. The guy had gotten expelled though because she had eventually gone to the school board because she had been so pissed off with him lying. Yeah, but she had everyone worried, hellooo? She called our parents Kayla rolled her eyes. She didn’t have a problem with Chelsea really, she was just picking faults and doing it mainly to piss her sister off. Smart in her own way? Like how? Kayla burst into laughter. She’s just really dumb, I don’t see how she can be ‘smart in her own way’ she shrugged.
Yeah, before she gets the police involved again, or maybe this time she’d go to the F.B.I....no wait, she wouldn’t know what they do. she laughed. I’m sorry okay? You know, things come at you when you’re driving she said Jeez chill out sis she laughed like it was normal to swerve when driving. I don’t have an obsession she said moodily. You’re so dramatic, we’re not going to die she said rolling her eyes again. Kayla scoffed If your going to poke fun of me, and be all like...fangirl, at least do a better, more believable job than that she told her. A monkey could do a better than the one you just did. she said laughing. Oh yeah, I would, a song with my name in it? A dream come true! she mocked. No, that really would be pretty awesome. But they chose Kate....not Kayla she shrugged. I guess Kate is more common than Kayla she laughed. I’m unique she smiled at her sister. The next song came on and she turned it up just a little. This one is like, my favourite. she grinned with her eyes actually on the road. She quickly looked over at her sister and knew she secretly hated the music but she didn’t care.
I don’t think that she scowled . Because.... she sighed. It was weird! she admitted. You’ve known each other like five minutes and he gives you this amazing gift? she said. It made me think how lame mine was compared to it because I knew that you really loved it she admitted. She hadn’t ever said that so admitting it was quite big. It was like, he got you this amazing gift, something you have always wanted she sighed. Mr. Perfect she said pulling a strand of her hair behind her ears. Ever since he came here, we haven’t been the same. He has been the reason for us arguing so much. Come on, you have to agree that. The guy is just a dick, I don’t like him. she sighed. The car is different, it was a gift to share, they have never got us something as big as that. It was a ‘well done’ present for you as well because you did so well in exams. she rolled her eyes. I can’t help the fact that I am not academic, that I concentrate more on what I AM good at, but I get stick for it all the time Kait, and they praise you for everything. You don’t know how hard that is. I’ve had it virtually all my seventeen years. she said. This was going into different territory, Kait knew how Kayla felt about her always getting praised. I just wish, for once, they could appreciate me for my games, or for a show I do. Sure, they come to see my shows and they are proud of me, but not like they are of you.
I didn’t say that did I? she snapped. And there ARE more jobs than just fashion she said snarkily. I hated working at that fast food place back in New York but I still did it she said. She couldn’t see Kaitlyn working in a fast food place, like ever. Not even a restaurant, but that was just because she was that type of person, Kait went for what she wanted with jobs to get the experience but Kayla had just had them for the money. She had worked hard though so to her it didn’t really matter. Actually I wouldn’t, he is just some flashy asshole who thinks he can get a girl by flashing the cash, a lot of girls aren’t into that. I know we haven’t always been dating but Aidan has money and he has never bought me an over the top present. she pointed out. It just says to me that he has some kind of hidden agenda and I don’t like it she said honestly. Why can’t he go for the normal gifts first and then the over the top ones? That would have been much better, and I wouldn’t have this hate against him either.
A $1,500 purse is a weird gesture. I would give it back if a guy gave me one she said honestly. Thank god Aidan knew her well enough to know she would not like that kind of thing. And F.Y.I, I don’t even like Harry all that much she said. He’s not my favourite, Danny is. she said, and that was a complete lie. Ever since she had discovered the group, she had instantly liked Harry. Admittedly since she found out he was related to Chris she had liked him slightly less. therefore it does make sense actually she glared at her. How she was driving right now was beyond her, because her mind was now all over the place. He never slept with her when we were on the break, that was a while back. I’d been with other guys before then, he knows that she said and scoffed. He DOES CARE ABOUT ME! she shouted and swerved again. She was getting really angry now. Oh so you think I am like this because of him? No, I am like this because of your whorey bitch skank ex best friend Giovanna she growled at her. If she didn’t exist, everything would have been fine. Everything that happened this summer is her fault. she huffed. She honestly believed that. She wouldn’t even have gone for a drink with Marcus if she had been with Aidan, or at least in a happy mood, but she had been miserable because of her.
Oh yeah, dinner at like, the most expensive restaurant in New York she said laughing. I so wanted to go there for our birthday last year, mom and dad would have paid for us and all our friends, but no...for our sixteenth you said we should do something ‘better than that’ I mean we WERE gonna try hit the clubs after. she said pissed off. Mentioning about her taking Aidan back was the last straw. You’ve never been in love so you don’t know she screamed at her. having someone you would do just about anything for, and knowing they would do the same she went on. I felt so weak for giving in, but I can’t help that I love him....I can’t lose him. she said and burst into tears. You don’t even know anything about relationships, have you ever actually been in one before Chris? she said, having the tears run down her face. Don’t talk about something you don’t even fucking know anything about! she screamed. At that moment she saw a bright light, a large truck heading towards them. She screamed and hit the breaks, skidding into the truck on her side.
words; 1,680 notes; WOAH! Monster muse rubbed off on me! So in a question/answer type thing about Kait and her previous boyfriends, I think she dated Neil at some point.

"Yeah, and mom and dad told her that we were with them, so it's not like either of them had a heart attack. At least she acts like a human being," Kait frowned, no longer wishing to listen to her sister go on about her friend like she was, "I don't know why you have to be a bitch all the time. It's getting old." She turned up her nose, trying to focus on McFly playing in the background and ignore Kayla. She was being fairly successful, too, until her twin almost ran them off the road. "Maybe if you had both hands on the steering wheel and were thinking about driving instead of telling me how stupid my best friend is, that wouldn't have happened," Kait pointed out angrily, doing nothing to help the situation. As her sibling went on about monkeys, Kait ran her hands through her hair, shaking her head. "How am I supposed to say anything when your arguments don't even make sense? God." For once, she really wish they'd been given two cars.
"Yeah. Luck of the draw, I guess," Kait rolled her eyes for the upteenth time. She didn't care about her name being in a song, or whether 'Kayla' was less common than 'Kaitlyn.' She was far more interested in finding a way to survive sitting next to Kayla for the next twenty-odd minutes. When her sister mentioned that the next song was her favourite, Kait gave her a tight smile. "Good. Why don't you keep quiet and listen to it, then?" Anything to get her companion to shut up. Why did I think that would work? she thought as her twin went off on another tangent. "We didn't know each other for five minutes! I got to know him while we were planning your birthday surprise. You know, McFly? He's the reason you got to meet them in the first place." As Kayla continued, though, a spark of compassion grew in Kait's eyes, and for a moment her tone was normal. "Oh, come on, Kay. I couldn't not get excited about it.. not after he'd spent so much. That doesn' mean I didn't appreciate your gift any less.." she shook her head at her sister's 'Mr. Perfect' comment, quoting the old saying: "nobody's perfect, Kayla. As you've been quick to point out, in Chris's case." She grinned, to let her sister know she was joking.
"The only reason we're arguing so much is because you can't seem to look past your weird belief that he's bad news!" Just when Kait thought they whole thing might be coming to an end, her sister had to go back into fighting mode. This was the most annoying conversation she could remember having with anyone. "And it's not like it's just him. I mean, you haven't been the same since the whole thing with Giovanna and Aidan. I understand that you were upset, but it's done now. You're just refusing to let yourself be normal again," she accused, eyes narrowing, "the old Kayla would have given Chris more of a chance." Kait wanted desperately to believe that that was true. As far as she could tell, Chris hadn't done a bad thing in his whole life, and even Kayla wouldn't find a single fault besides his apparent snootiness, and the fact that he'd been born rich. If only she could knock some sense into her companion.
"Oh, come on, they can't give us both a car and then have it be more for me than for you. You're so caught up in believing they love me more, you can't see they're just as proud of your athletics and drama as they are of my academics. Give them a little credit." Great, now they were going in circles, right back to where they'd started. Kait didn't know why Kayla needed a reason to be jealous all the time. As far as she was concerned, some people were just luckier or better than others, and if someone outdid you in something you had to be supportive rather than vengeful. She'd always had her sister's back, and it hurt that Kayla couldn't at least shut up and pretend to be happy for Kait. Then again, Kait had always been able to lift herself just that much higher, and she knew it. It wasn't as if she purposefully wanted to outdo her sister; she just found it easier to accomplish things. Probably because she was better at focusing on her goals. "Well, it's not like I can control their behaviour. It's not like I want them to like me better, and I don't even think they do. But if you want to fix the problem, you should be yelling to them about it, not me. I'm not going to hold back just so you can have your turn in the spotlight," she shot unhappily.
"Yeah, but with mom and dad's allowance plus the money I saved up, I have enough for everything I need. It's not like I asked him to get me anything for my birthday, he just went out and did it, and my only crime was accepting it. Oh, no, call the police! I let a guy give me a gift!" Kait put her hands up, the volume of her voice increasing slightly. As Kayla continued, her mood worsened. "First of all, I liked Chris before I knew he was rich. Second of all, did you ever consider that maybe he just really likes me, and wanted to show it? Or that he didn't even consider how much it cost? He's certainly never asked for anything in return. And if he's the sort to throw his money around and impress girls, why hasn't he been dating anyone besides me? He could probably get half the school's population with that accent alone, if he wanted." Now Kait herself was beginning to believe some of the things Kayla was saying, and that pissed her off even more, because she knew they couldn't be true. Chris, once you got past his stereotypical exterior, was one of the most genuine people she knew.
"Oh, so he's not your favourite, big woop. You still like him though, don't you?" Kait pointed out, knowing her sister couldn't possibly hate the drummer. At Kayla's reaction to the comments about Aidan, though, Kait realized she'd gone too far. As the car began to move from side to side, she made to grab the wheel, then pulled back, realizing that would only cause more problems. "Yeah, ex-best friend! But you can't pretend he didn't... never mind," she gave up, starting to realize that this would be the worst possible time to get into all of that. Maybe once they were safely parked, but not while they were driving at night. "What are you talking about? You never said anything about the View!" Kait blurted, then suddenly remembered the conversation. She had no idea why she'd turned it down, she would've loved to have done that for their party. She would never admit it to Kayla, but she was a bit freaked out by how Chris seemed willing to spend so much money on her. She just didn't want to seem rude by telling him to tone it down.. especially when he was always so excited about it. She'd figured it was a sort-of British, upper class thing, anyway. "Just because I'm not a whore doesn't mean I don't know anything about relationships! Just because I have self-respect and don't date every guy who gives me the eye doesn't mean I don't understand love! Don't tell me what I do and don't know!" Kait retorted, but she could already feel the fight leaving her. She really didn't know what she was talking about when it came to relationships, and this whole thing with Chris was new. It scared her sometimes.
Suddenly, Kait was distracted from the mess of thoughts in her head by a bright light. She looked up, eyes growing to the size of saucers at the sight of the truck heading straight for them. "Kayla!" she screamed, reaching over to grab the wheel and yank it to her side of the car, hoping beyond hope that they might avoid the oncoming monster. A ripping sound tore through the air and she felt her arm being forced from any notion of steering. The screeching of metal against metal filled her head, going on and on without end, and her seatbelt was digging painfully into her chest. And then, just like it had started, everything stopped. Realizing her eyes were shut, Kait struggled to open them, trying to orient herself... she could see streetlights, and pavement. She struggled to turn her head, eyes widening at the amount of blood covering her sister. "...Kay?" she whimpered, struggling to move. Then, pain engulfed her, and everything went black.
After a while, the world began to flutter back into view. Kait wasn't sure if she'd been out for a few seconds or an hour, but she could hear sirens. Soon, she saw the red of a firetruck, and heard shouting voices. Someone's face appeared before her, and she smiled, glad to see that help had arrived. The mouth on that face began moving, and she squinted, struggling to understand what it was saying. "What?" she mumbled. Then, realizing he was asking if she could hear him, she began to nod. He jumped slightly, shaking his head: 'don't move. We're going to get you out of there.' "Okay," she sighed, closing her eyes again.
She was next woken by a loud noise, though it was further away this time. She looked around, realizing she was no longer in the car; she was on a bed. But what was a bed doing in the middle of the road? 'She's awake again,' somebody said, and a woman appeared before her, looking stern but friendly. 'Honey, you've been in an accident, but we managed to get you out of the car. Now we're going to put you in an ambulance and take you to the hospital, alright?' Kait almost nodded, then remembered the man's orders and simply said, "okay," once more. However, panic quickly flooding through her. "Kayla? Where's Kayla? Kayla!" she looked around, seeing a group of firefighters surrounding a wrecked vehicle, beside some sort of machine. 'Kayla? Is that your friend? She's still in the car, they're using the jaws of life to get her out.' The lady informed her, then began moving Kait's bed. "She's my sister. Let me see her, I need to see her!" Kait struggled to sit up, but the lady placed a gentle hand on her shoulder. 'The fire fighters know what they're doing. They'll get your sister out, don't worry. We're just going to lift you into the ambulance, now, there'll be a bit of a jolt.' Glad that Kayla was going to be okay, Kait laid back down, breathing deeply and allowing the darkness to consume her once more.
ooc M A S S I V E. Sorry, got carried away with the after-the-crash bit, hah.

Chris had been alone in his dorm, since his roomies had both gone to Timmy’s family for Thanksgiving, he didn’t celebrate it being British and he didn’t see the point in going home for the few days that the holiday allowed. It would just mean that he was jetlagged most of the time when he was at home and what was the point of that? He didn’t really see it so because of that he had decided to stay at school. He thought he could use the time to get some work done since even Kait had gone to see her family that night. Virtually everyone who lived fairly close by had left that day or night...or they were leaving the next day. So Chris was more or less on his own apart from a few people who lived a little too far away to go home for just a few days. He would have rather liked to of gone home, but he knew there was no point so he had just called his parents instead, he decided he would talk to them about Christmas, he wanted to ask Kait to go with him to his family at Christmas, his parents had loved the idea, then he said that they would probably go to New York for the New Year, so that they could go to both, but of course this had been Chris’ idea and he hadn’t discussed it with Kaitlyn yet.
Chris didn’t really think that he was rushing things with Kaitlyn. Taking her to expensive restaurants, giving her expensive handbag, which was just the way that he saw was normal. He didn’t think it was over the top or anything, but there were some people who did think that. He still didn’t understand why Kayla hated him so much, or even Carter...though that had been better since Carter had opened up....he was still a little moody around him though. At least he had a friend in Timmy, and there was Emerson, but he wasn’t around because he had decided to take a few days out of school and go home. Chris could have done that but he wanted to decided he wanted to stay with Kait before she went home and he had done, they’d had a good meal the night before she was going, he had also taken her shopping. He was thinking that things couldn’t be any better, he really believed that she could be the one and was definitely falling fast for her, faster than he had planned to. When he’d come to the school he hadn’t really been over his ex, Kimberley. But that had changed once he had started seeing Kait, and he had just really gotten on great with her. He knew she was something special, and he just seemed to like everything about her, Chris didn’t want to be too full on though so he hadn’t told her how hard he was falling for her. He really did think he might love her even...he didn’t know if he was ready to say that to her just yet though, he needed time to prepare a speech for it all.
That night he had been finishing off some work when he’d gotten the call from Kait and Kayla’s parents. What? Are they okay? he asked fretfully. His face was full of worry. When he heard Kait was okay just with a broken arm, but Kayla was in a coma he knew he had to go and see her. He had to be there for Kait, and make sure that she was okay. He told them that he would be going to the hospital, quickly grabbed his keys and locked up the door making his way to the student parking lot where his car was. He got to the hospital and went to the reception, they were reluctant to let him see the girls because he wasn’t immediate family, and because of Kayla’s condition, but since he had pretty much begged, they made an exception. He walked in and rushed straight over to Kait and sat by her. I am so glad that you’re okay. I was so worried he said to her. He looked over at Kayla hooked up to the drips and machines. How is Kayla? he asked.
OOC//compared to your wopper post it really really sucks. I feel really bad writing so little compared to you, that post was amazing. I would have written more had I posted as Kayla, but Chris just seemed the one that would make more sense.

Kait's next concious realization was that she was no longer strapped onto an uncomfortable stretcher, being jostled back and forth in an ambulance on the way to the hospital. In fact, judging by the bright lights and the smell of bleach, she had been transported successfully into Jacksonville's medical center. Slowly, she opened her eyes, careful to let them adjust. There was a television above her - the first thing she saw - but it wasn't on. Then, curiously, she glanced down at herself. She was somewhat surprised to find that her arm had wrapped in a cast. In fact, the whole thing seemed ridiculously unreal. She'd never had a broken bone in her life! And now... well, everything ached, basically. In a sort-of dull, medicated way. Not wanting to think too much about what had happened just yet, Kait allowed her eyes to travel to the door next. She could see a hallway beyond it, painted that weird, hospital green. Noises drifted into her room: beeping machines and voices and footsteps. It took her a moment to realize that there were sounds coming from within her room, too, and she turned her head, noticing for the first time that she wasn't alone.
For a moment, she just stared at the bed next to her, trying to figure out who the strange person laying there might be. They were hooked up to one of those heart-monitering machines, and there seemed to be no end to the IV bags hung up around them. Honestly, how many tubes could one person have connected to their body? Kait struggled to sit up a bit higher, still not quite used to having only one useable arm. Curiously, she peered over at her companion's face. And gasped. "Kay?" she asked, voice sounding strangely muffled in her mind. That couldn't be her sister, no. It was impossible. Just - impossible. And yet... Kait let out a sort-of choked, whimpering noise, turning away quickly, but not before the memory of the accident came rushing back to her with crushing intensity. How they'd been arguing; the horrible, horrible things she'd said about her sister and Aidan. The glare of headlights right before impact, and the blood covering her twin's face in those seconds or minutes or hours following. She shut her eyes, willing the images to go away, but the darkness only intensified their power. Desperately, she searched for the TV remote, finding it on her bedside table. With the press of the power button, the beeping of Kayla's heart moniter was drowned out by meaningless noise. Kait stared blankly at the bright images on the screen, not understanding what was happening or even what she was watching.
After a while, a nurse appeared, reassuring and calm. Kait smiled and nodded, letting herself be poked and prodded and checked. As the woman seemed about to leave, however, she found herself blurting, "what's going to happen to my sister?" She'd meant to sound confident and demanding, but her voice came out raspy and weak, and she had to repeat herself in order to be heard properly. "She's suffered a few injuries, and she's currently in a coma," the nurse informed her, suddenly seeming uncertain, "but the doctor says her chances of recovery are good. The best thing you can do for her is focus on your own recovery." Out of natural politeness, Kait nodded and allowed the nurse to leave before scowling deeply. How could she focus on her own recovery when Kayla would probably never be the same? She didn't know much about comas, but she knew they weren't good. Some people could be in comas for years. Decades. What if Kayla never woke up? What if she just stayed there, like that, forever, hooked up to a million tubes and that damn beeping machine? What if she never got to smile, or laugh, or do all the things she wanted to do? Kayla was never meant to be confined to a bed like that - she lived for physical activity! If anyone deserved to be on the other side of the room, it was Kait. The whole accident was practically her fault, anyway. If she hadn't brought up Aidan, if she hadn't been so quick to jump to Chris's defence... why did she feel so protective over him, anyway? What Kayla had said was true: Kait didn't know a thing about him, other than that he was rich and good looking. But what was that worth in the grand scheme of things? Not her sister's life, that was for sure.
The longer Kait sat there trying to lose herself in the television program she was supposed to be watching, the more she hated herself, and the more she hated Chris. If she hadn't been so attracted to him, if he hadn't been so damn perfect, they wouldn't be in this situation right now. He'd had her under his spell, that was for sure. But not any more. Kait set her jaw angrily, reaching for the remote again and turning the TV off. She felt like she was about to explode. She was scared beyond belief for Kayla, mad beyond belief at Chris, and simply disgusted with herself. All of it was irrational; after all, there was no way any of these emotions could change what had been done. But she couldn't keep them at bay. They flooded through her mind, laced with memories of the crash, and she wasn't sure whether she should scream or cry. Fortunately, fate decided for her, as Chris chose that moment to poke his head through the doorway.
Kait held her tongue as he moved to sit next to her. He seemed so wonderful, so concerned. She was almost convinced. She almost wanted to crawl into his arms and let him hold her until everything was better, to let her believe that Kayla would wake up and the world would be right again. But how could she? It would be like a slap in her comatose sister's face to do that now, right beside her as she lay unable to wake up. So, at Chris's question, Kait forced herself to be strong. For Kayla, she decided, knowing none of it made sense but not really caring. She couldn't think straight, and at the moment pushing him away seemed the easiest thing to do. "How do you think she's doing?" Kait shot back, fire in her eyes. She could feel tears welling up, as well, which only made her more upset. "She's laying there in that bed, and she might never wake up. Oh, yeah, she's just fucking fine." She let out a sob, eyes locked on to the form of her sister. She just couldn't tear them away. She didn't want to see the expression on Chris's face.
ooc Yess, that was good. (: Sorry this one took a little while. Hope it works!

Chris saw Kait lying there in the bed and couldn’t help but feel worried. Maybe if he had offered to go with the girls and drive them it wouldn’t have happened. But he didn’t know that one of the reasons they were in the hospital was because of him. He didn’t know that they had been arguing about him and the way he was, but he wanted to comfort Kait, since it looked like her sister was seriously ill, he knew that was what she needed. Luckily she had got off lightly with just a broken arm. That wasn’t so bad at least, but he still was worried. How long would she be in hospital for? He was also thinking about their plans for Christmas and being slightly selfish. Well, if her sister was still in a coma then she wasn’t going to want to go with him to London, or bring him to New York either. He knew that but he couldn’t help but want to ask her. He just had really bad timing, he had to hold himself back so that he wouldn’t. What he didn’t realise was that he should at least give Kaitlyn SOME space and not be so...protective? Overprotective? Whatever it was, some people would say that he could be smothering her.
He didn’t think of that though, he had been brought up to treat people with respect, but of course with his upbringing he had some bad traits with the fact that he was quite arrogant and snobby some of the time., Chris didn’t always see this and he ended up saying things in the wrong way. He didn’t always mean what he said in the way he said it and over in America it was harder to make himself sound less like a snob because he was British, even though it was the same language, there were some things that were different and he was still even now getting used to them because he wanted to make the effort, and yes he was a snob, along with other things but he was also a good person if you saw through all that. He didn’t mean to say most of what he said, though some of it maybe he did because he did tend to think he was better than some people who were at the school because he had money...well his parents had money and he didn’t need to work. There weren’t many people who liked that kind of attitude, who would like that kind of attitude anyway, it was really snobby.
Chris looked at Kait confused as she snapped. He looked over at Kayla again and figured she was just upset about her sister so he put an arm round her. Well you’ve told me she is strong, I am sure she will pull through Chris told her with a smile leaning over to take her hand in his. He wanted to let her know that he was there for her, but he didn’t know that Kait wanted him to leave and was trying to push him away. He didn’t know that she was partly blaming him for them being where they were, after all if she hadn’t been with Chris, she wouldn’t have been defending him and they wouldn’t have been arguing. Though he didn’t know all this. He wasn’t aware of it because he had no idea; he was just confused over all of it as she snapped at him. He looked at her sadly I am so sorry this happened Kait. I wish I could do more He told her. Do you know anything else about her condition? he asked. He didn’t seem to realise that going on about it was probably not the best thing to do, that it was just making things worse. Chris was never good at picking things like that up because he just didn’t, he wasn’t good at stopping the conversation when it was needed, he would often say what he thought, just because of his upbringing.
There were many flaws in that and he seemed to know that yet he didn’t seem to make an effort to avoid it happening again. He just didn’t know when to quit it. Most people would see that Kaitlyn was probably best being left on her own, but no, Chris wanted to stay with her, he wasn’t going to let that one go because he just didn’t want to, he didn’t want to lose her, and he was falling for her. How could he let her go right now when she was going through what she was going through with her sister? Well he couldn’t, whether she liked it or not, he was staying. Unless someone dragged him out of the room. Which he didn’t realise would be pretty easy to do if that was what Kaitlyn wanted. All he wanted was for her to be safe, it didn’t matter about anything else right now, all he could think of was her.

Subconsciously, Kait knew she was being ridiculous. She knew that none of this had been Chris's fault. But shock, pain and worry had taken over her mind, and all she could think about was Kayla. Honestly, all she wanted to do was cry or scream or something dramatic like that.. maybe run to her sister's bed and hold her hand and make some long speech about how she'd been right and how she wasn't a pathetic slut and how, if only she would wake up, they could find a way to recapture the carefree days when they'd gotten along with each other. Without Chris, without all that had happened with Giovanna and Aidan. Kait was sobbing in full force now, and shook her head angrily at Chris's unreasonably optimistic words. Damn him for looking on the bright side. It wasn't his sister laying on the brink of life and death, was it? How could he possibly understand? "No she won't. Look at her!" Kait clutched at her blanket, turning her gaze toward the other bed, "what if she's like that forever? And the last thing I ever said was that she's a whore?" Kait didn't know how anything could ever be okay ever again, and Chris came waltzing in here, that stupid smile on his face. She could've punched him. Instead, she just shrunk away from his arm, not wanting to give in to its reassuring weight. She didn't want to feel better; she didn't deserve too, not until Kayla woke up and Kait could tell her she loved her.
When Chris told her he wished there was something he could do, Kait cringed, sniffling in a futile attempt to stem the flow of her tears. "You've already done enough," she told him forcefully, knowing for a fact he wouldn't understand. She was being completely irrational. Even she knew that. But she didn't care: she was willing to do whatever it would take to bring Kayla back, even if it meant pushing Chris out of her life completely. Even with his good looks, caring personality, British charm and, yes, money, he wasn't worth losing her twin. "All I know is that she has a 'chance.' A fucking 'chance.' And it's all my fault. If I hadn't been yelling at her, if I'd driven instead..." Kait began to shiver with anger and greif. She could literally feel the strength draining from her. How long had it been since the crash? A few hours? A day? She felt so detached from the outside world, and in a way, she couldn't even believe what was happening. She half-hoped she would wake up and discover that the whole thing had been some sort of sick, twisted dream. But for now, she would have to endure the whole crazy scene.
Tired now, Kait slumped back on her pillows, using her good hand to wipe the tears from her face. She probably looked like crap, but she didn't care. In fact, it could work to her advantage. She looked at Chris briefly before glancing away, eyes flashing with stubbornness. She knew what she had to do. It wouldn't solve everything, but it would save her from having to deal with his pompous ass for the next little while. She wanted to focus all of her attention on Kayla, and in order to do that, she needed to get rid of Chris. Hesitating for only a second, she allowed her eyes to meet his own, careful not to betray her inner uncertainty. "Chris... I'm sorry, but..." she took a deep breath, not wanting to start crying again, "I think you should go. And don't worry about visiting again. I have to think about getting better. And getting Kayla better." Again, Kait looked away, fingers toying with the edges of her blanket now. If he would only give her some space, and some time to think, maybe she might find a way to stop feeling so hateful and useless. "To do that, it'd be best for us to take a break, you know?" One last time, she found the courage to meet his gaze, to get the message across as clearly as possible. Leave, she willed silently.

Chris watched Kaitlyn, confused. He wanted to comfort her more than he was doing, but she didn’t seem to want him to do it, so he refrained himself the best he could. Seeing her so upset made him sad also, he didn’t like seeing anyone upset, he may act snobby and uptight and not really the type to want to have friends, but he was quite the opposite really. At his old school he had been really popular, but of course they had pretty much all been around the same personality as him, and some had been even worse, not that he actually meant to be that way, because he didn’t but that was just how he appeared to others, it was something that he found hard, because he was that way because of his upbringing and lifestyle, and his parents. He didn’t really know any different since he had been at boarding school practically all his life, and people around him were similar, it hadn’t made it easy for him to fit in, but Kait had been one of the few people to instantly be nice to him, who made him feel welcome. It was sad but true. He wished that he could make things better for her right now, but he couldn’t. As she snapped, he turned his attention to where Kayla was lying and sighed. You don’t know that, we all just have to hope for the best he said trying to reassure her. You can’t think like that, you need to stay positive he said. He didn’t know if what he was saying would make things better but he could at least try, he wanted to be there for her even if she was being like that with her, because he couldn’t just leave her, could he?
Done what? he asked confused as hell. He looked at her with the most confused look on his face. What did she mean ’you’ve done enough’ he hadn’t been anywhere near at the time of the accident. He shook his head and looked at her, taking her hand in his gently, hoping that she wouldn’t pull away. Kaitlyn, please explain to me, I don’t know what you mean. he pleaded looking into her sapphire blue eyes. He loved her eyes. He had always told her that they were her best feature, he smiled at the thoughtm but quickly brushed it off. Kait, talk to me, I just want to know what you mean about all this, I was so worried, how have I already done enough, I came here to see you, that is all... he said He hoped that she would explain, because he was clueless at this point right now and really needed her to tell him what she meant. He deserved that at least. Or so he thought he did, he hadn’t done anything wrong, he could understand her being slightly snappy but it was like she was blaming him for the accident and that was not fair at all.
You can’t blame yourself he told her softly And you shouldn’t think about the ‘ifs’ because if you had been driving it could be you in that bed over there he told her sadly. It was the wrong thing to say when it was her own sister fighting for her life, but honestly he was so glad that she was okay, and he wanted Kayla to be okay as well, but Kait was the one he had been more concerned about. He was really falling hard for her, he really liked her....maybe even loved her but right now was not the right time to bring that up and he knew that. All you can do is hope and pray she will get better, I am sure the doctors are doing all they can. It’s not your fault Kaitlyn. he told her with a firm tone, he wanted to make sure that she shouldn’t blame herself for the tragedy she was dealing with right now, she needed to stop doing it because it was just going to make her feel worse, and that wasn’t going to help anyone. He was thinking of her, when Kait was thinking of her sister.
He watched as Kait wiped her tears, even in the state she was in, tired, worn out and make up down her face, full of tears...Chris still believed that she looked beautiful. He frowned as she spoke her next words. Y-you want me to leave? he asked her a little shocked. Why would she want him to leave? He was just trying to help her and make her feel better about everything, help her see that it wasn’t her fault and that she shouldn’t blame herself. But Kaitlyn I.... he trailed off. Why? he asked. Why are you telling me not to visit again? he asked her softly. When she spoke again, it all made sense, and became clear. A break? Wasn’t that technically breaking up? She was dumping him? He shook his head in disbelief, he didn’t want to believe what he was hearing, or believe that it was true, that it was probably better for them right now. But in Chris’ mind, how was it better? Is this really what you want? he asked her. I know you are upset, but maybe you just need time. I mean I can come back tomorrow and we can talk it though. he said. I can give you space Kaitlyn, but I don’t want to give you up. I won’t give up on you he said and a few tears began to fall down his face. I..... he trailed off, no he couldn’t say it. Not now, but he felt it. Right now his heart hurt, he had never felt that kind of emotional pain before. He had been upset when him and Kimberley broke it off, but that was mutual, and this wasn’t, plus he knew that their long distance relationship could not have worked, but he really felt strongly for Kait. As she told him to leave, in almost a whisper, he nodded at her wish. Okay...I’m sorry he said wiping his tears. Chris never usually cried, but this had got to him. I love you he said and walked out of the door.
OOC//MEGA Chris muse woop! I hope you like it, I know we didn’t plan them saying ‘I love you’ but I had him getting really emotional and him just saying it at the end kinda fitted in. Okay so now you need to get on with the kait/carter plot I

Kait curled over herself slightly, the look on Chris's face only increasing her pain and uncertainty. She could tell she was about to hurt him. For all the people who seemed to think he was full of himself, with no feelings whatsoever - least of all for her - she, at least, could tell that he truly cared. Why would he have come running to the hospital if he didn't? Why would he be trying his hardest to make her feel better, when all she could do was push him away? Hell, he would even probably understand what she was going through, if she had the strength to describe it to him. As it was, though, it just didn't feel right to be comforted or happy. Not now, not ever. "Everybody always says to hope for the best, but that's bullshit. If you hope for the best, it only ends up being ten times worse when the best doesn't happen. Did you know that sometimes, people in comas are already dead? Their brains don't work any more. It's just their bodies that are living. What if Kayla's already gone, and I'm sitting here, telling myself it'll all be okay?" Kait wasn't sure how he could understand her past her sobbing and blabbering.
When Chris asked what he'd done, Kait only cried harder. If she didn't know any better, she'd say she was becoming hyterical. "Nothing," she replied. She wasn't being difficult; she'd simply forgotten how to think straight. She wasn't even making sense to herself any more - all she knew was, for some reason or another, she needed her boyfriend gone. She pulled her hand from his, shaking her head as if that might give all the answers. "I just... I just..." she drifted off, afraid to look at him. Her eyes, of course, had their own ideas, and compelled her to turn her head so that she could observe what she was doing. Passing on her misery to someone who didn't deserve it at all. "I know. And I'm glad you came, really, but I can't -" she sniffled, finally tearing her gaze away from him. Her tears had stopped for the moment, but she could feel a new batch getting ready to burst.
"If I'd been driving, I wouldn't have swerved in front of that truck," Kait told Chris stubbornly, this time giving him a look which forbade argument, "besides, it should be me over in that bed. I was always better at sitting still than she is, anyway. I could lay there all day and be perfectly happy, but Kayla would go insane." For the first time, Kait reached out to Chris, clinging to his arms. "I would give anything to trade places," she told him, searching his eyes wildly, willing him to believe her. Upon seeing only kindness and confusion, she tore herself away, shifting to stare at Kayla. Chris had told her not to think about the ifs, but she couldn't help it. Her head was full of them, an endless loop of things she could have done differently to avoid this whole mess. "When did hoping and praying ever change anything?" Kait asked bitterly. She had momentarily forgotten about Chris, and it was only after she'd answered him that she realized he was still in the room. There were many reasons to kick him out right then, and avoiding having him see her like this was swiftly added to the list. She felt like she was going crazy.
Kait nodded meekly at Chris's shocked question. The tears threatened ever more terribly, but she had to be strong. At least for this. If he saw her crying about it, he would know that, deep down, she didn't mean it. That she was just scared, and all she really needed was for him to hold her until she quit screaming. But men are stupid, and they rarely realize that this is the case. She could tell just by looking at him that he was going to do exactly what she asked of him, and it broke her heart completely in two. "Yes," she nodded vehemently, "I need space. A lot of it. For a while. I'll... um, I'll let you know when..." she trailed off, losing her train of thought at the sight of his tears. Kait had always known that Chris was sweet and caring, but she had never expected him to be so upset at losing her. Maybe not even losing her - she had said 'break,' hadn't she? That wasn't really breaking up, was it? She almost faltered, almost told him to come back, that she was losing it and that she needed him. But something stopped her. Perhaps it was a cold sense of curiosity. Was he really worth the trouble?
"You don't have to.." Kait whispered past the lump in her throat at his words. I won't give up on you. She desperately hoped he meant it. She knew that, with time, she would need him, and if he wasn't there she would end up hating herself more than ever. Though, if he did give up on her, then he obviously didn't care as much as he seemed to. So she would win either way, right? Tired of her useless, morbid thoughts, Kait pushed herself into an emotional state of numbness. It lasted until the sound of Chris's footsteps on the ugly hospital floor died away. Then, once she was absolutely sure he could no longer hear her, she buried her face in her blankets and cried over every second of the past however-the-hell-many hours it had been since her and Kayla got in that car.
