appearance:More man than boy in his appearance, Arthur is frequently mistaken for older than his eighteen years. He is fairly tall, with the kind of solid, amateur rugby-player physique that will lend itself to fat in later life; perhaps more off-putting, though, is that he shuns the conventional clean shave and prefers to wear as much beard as he is currently capable of growing. Arthur has startlingly blue-green eyes – as a sentimental (and possibly slightly inebriated) aunt once said, ‘the colour of the sea on a postcard’ – but perhaps more striking, really, are the eyebrows that overshadow them. Bushy, beetling and several shades darker than his artfully dishevelled hair, they convey more expression than the rest of his characteristics put together. ‘Handsome’ is a matter of very divided opinion, but he does appear to be fairly even-featured – that is, until he turns to the side; his flat profile has led some past classmates to claim that his face looks like a foot. In terms of clothing, he tends to favour brand names like Jack Wills in the hopes that visible logos will distract from his lack of anything approaching genuine style.
personality:Arthur oscillates between the twin contradictions of arrogant egotism and wounded self-deprecation: he’s both narcissistic and self-loathing. Or in other words, however personable and well-adjusted he may appear, scratch the surface and he’s as neurotic as the stereotype of a psychiatrist’s offspring would purport him to be. As a child, his mother’s focus was not on changing bad behaviour directly but on identifying its underlying causes; now, instead of seeing the world as a grey and twisting path of good and bad choices, Arthur sees it as an ethereal and fluctuating binary of things he can and cannot do.
There is no ‘should’ or ‘ought’. His actions, well-meaning or otherwise, tend to disregard duty and head for hedonism. Unlike some teenagers, he is conscious enough of his privilege and the value of the academic that he’s rebelled relatively little at school; his personal relationships, however, show no such security. Arthur has moved around so much in his life that he unconsciously treats people as disposable objects, able to be replaced. He has a tendency towards manipulative behaviour and risk-taking, for the purpose of entertainment – he’d claim that it was universal, but past evidence proves otherwise. His motives, however, are not sadistic; he simply possesses a much lesser degree of emotional awareness than you would expect for someone as articulate as he is. He observes their behaviour carefully, but the ‘inner lives’ of other human beings remain bafflingly opaque.
All of this is unlikely to be perceived by a new acquaintance, but his faults become more and more apparent the more contact you have with him. Arthur is quite reserved by nature, but tries to cover up any introversion with a front of impulse and audacity. His public persona is a brash smart-alec with a pessimistic sense of humour and a tendency to speak before he thinks. As things stand, he harbours little real ill-will towards anyone, but that doesn’t mean that he appears that way.
likes: sports, learning, left-wing politics, any and all food - especially if somebody else is cooking it, getting the last word, swimming in the sea in summer, europe, most movies, museums and art galleries, dogs, drinking, jokes, bets and tricks.
dislikes: cats, spending time with his family, therapy ("significantly less fun than getting a tooth pulled"), snow and cold weather, his father's militant atheism, any kind of -ism, music snobbery, overt sexuality (if only because he finds it intimidating).
strengths: intelligent, generous (at least with money, if not with time), usually cool-tempered, can be a good listener, willing to take a back-seat role when necessary.
weaknesses: cocky, rude, selfish, obstinate, pretentious know-it-all who always has to win. arthur has something of an entitlement complex. at times he can be more acerbic than he realises, and he has an unparalleled ability to find the negative in any given situation.

mother:elizabeth isherwood, psychiatrist, originally from vermont.
father:acton isherwood, 'professional atheist', originally from gloucestershire, england. what began as an academic career turned, after the publication of several books which all ended up on the bestsellers list, into one carried out very much in the public eye. a peddler of polemics, his works are an ingenious mix of religious critique, pop philosophy and superficial psychobabble snappy and engaging enough to be palatable to a lay audience. acton frequently appears on television and radio, and controversy follows him wherever he goes; the one downside to being a household name is that he receives enough hatemail each week to fill a pool twice over.
siblings: none.
significant other (s): none.
pets: his mother has three cats. arthur dislikes them: he's a dog person.
hometown: his family has lived in several different places over the years, and as a result he doesn't really have strong enough ties anywhere to consider it his 'hometown'.
partial history:
Arthur is the only son of two rich, older professionals who were quite unwilling to change their lifestyle to accommodate the interests of a child. From a young age, his father tried to talk to him as if he were an adult; his mother took a more liberal, permissive attitude to his behaviour than would be advised. Acton’s career led the family to several different countries – some stays longer than others – and Arthur’s early life was characterised by inconstancy and change. It was decided that boarding school was the most sensible option.
Acton Isherwood suffered from narcissism verging on a God complex: a trait shared, although to a lesser extent, by his now ex-wife. This mutual impairment, visible to all except the two who hold it, was probably the largest contributing factor in the breakup of their marriage around ten years ago. Choosing which parent to live with was simply a case of choosing the lesser of two evils. Acton’s travel was exciting but the freedom he allowed his son was verging on neglect; and when he listened, one suspected he was only waiting for his turn to speak. Elizabeth’s approach to parenting was cold and intellectualised, with her consulting room an unbridgeable gulf between them during working hours. He felt he would have had to break a leg to justify interrupting a session with a patient.
The period of the divorce was a stalemate of two warring egos. After choosing to live with his mother, Arthur would see his father perhaps twice a year: busy schedules got the blame, but Acton’s self-interested gaze was turned firmly inwards. At thirteen, Arthur was removed from his Cambridge boarding school and went to live in his mother’s home in Vermont, where he would attend a private day school. The upheaval was not particularly traumatic: he had attended several schools in several countries by this age, and fitting in as ‘the new kid’ was something he’d grown used to.
The atmosphere at home, however, was subtly oppressive. Adolescence was supposed to be a time of self-discovery, and Arthur felt an undercurrent of invasiveness in being constantly observed by someone who appeared to understand his motivations better than he did himself – someone who was prone to offering unsolicited psychiatric evaluations whenever her son behaved in a way she perceived to be erratic. Elizabeth came up with reasons for his behaviour that were entirely mysterious to him, and that was unnerving in itself; but what really spooked him was the way she would remain so poised and rational in the face of what anyone else would see as an emotional crisis. He found himself cycling rapidly from sullen resentment to absurd flare-ups of impatience, pushed into these two binary results by her lack of reaction. He was ashamed to take the role of petulant teenager, keeping secrets just for spite.
As a senior in high school, Arthur became a student at the newly opened Jacksonville Prep. Removed from the frustration of his family, the tension just evaporated; he was never as in his element as when he was in an entirely new environment. A sense of community, academic structure – and, at the same time, the thrill of the uncertain.
