Lucas slipped into the library breathing heavily from all the running he'd just been doing. He had gotten himself into a tight spot when he threw a water balloon on a picnic table full of seniors studying for their midterms. With the temperatures as cold as they were the papers instantly froze together and to the table, and when the students tried to save them they began tearing and crumbling to bits. He knew it was probably a dumb idea but the second of satisfaction when the balloon tore on impact made up for how much shit he'd been in now.
He dodged some students and raced towards the far back of the library, the stacks students called them, and when he could no longer see the front he stopped to catch his breath. He knew the students would be too dumb to look for him in here, or at least that is what he hoped as he tried to listen to the thumping sound of feet coming towards him. So far so good as he started to walk when his breathing became calm and he could truly relax. He'd have to hide out in here a little while but it didn't seem all that bad. He could find something that'd occupy his time...and that is when an all too familiar scent tickled his nose.
Cigarettes, someone had to have been smoking nearby. He searched through the stacks coming closer and closer to the back wall, and the closer he came the more powerful the cigarette smell was. "Marco?" He asked to let whoever was around the corner know it'd been him who was coming. Marco?" He still could hear nothing back as he walked around the corner and saw this small framed female sitting on the window ledge. "You do know that during the game you have to say Polo so I have a chance of finding you right?" He figured someone like this would tell him she didn't want to be found, but that still didn't stop him from stepping closer to get a better look at her.
He couldn't see a cigarette anymore so figured it'd tossed itself out the window, something he would have done as to not get caught, but it's not like he even smoked or anything to begin with. He sighed as he glanced over his shoulder to make sure nobody had snuck up behind them, and when he saw they were still alone he grinned facing her again. "You have to like playing games don't you?" He smirked, his game childish but still effective. "I'm Lucas by the way..." He grinned extending a hand though quickly withdrawing it. Shaking hands wasn't acceptable in high school was it? "Do you have a name, or should I just call you stack girl? You do know what people say that happens in the stacks when a girl and a guy are alone right..." He wiggled his eyebrows teasing though he probably shouldn't have said that last part, what a lame ass.

Charlie had heard students talking about the back corner of the library being completely off the radar to staff. Students would venture far enough into the stacks of reference books and old editions until they were completely hidden from sight. Even further and they would barely be heard if they kept at a normal tone, and if they managed to make it all the way to the back it was a teenagers oasis. You could do whatever you wanted back here without fear because the staff were all too lazy and/or worn out to come looking for you. She'd heard of this being the perfect "fuck spot" but honestly never saw the appeal. Who would want to have sex against a case lined with dusty old books? Not her, but some of that had to do with the fact she was still just a virgin. She had no sexual experience so perhaps these books lead to greater sexual performance? Words of wisdom off these shelves were quite possibly soaking into the sweaty backs of the teenagers fulfilling them on a greater level. Hm, maybe that's why test scores were so increased these days, sex in the stacks. It'd make sense if you twisted it enough.
Charlie had not been back here today for the reason to get laid. You would need another person for that activity, not that she was unfamiliar with the more independent tactic, but today she had her eyes set on a cigarette. She had been trapped in this library for hours on end doing a research paper and just needed a break. Being on campus they frowned when a student lit up on the main grounds, and because it was too cold for her to walk off campus she had to put a little more thought into it. When she remembered the stacks she was doubtful at first and didn't think it were true at all, but now that she'd walked this far back she could tell there was truth in the students logic. This was not just some urban legend and she was standing in the proof as she made it to the back wall and looked around. Thankfully she had no allergy to dust or she would never last with how filthy it was back here. She walked over to the window and peaked outside to see if anyone was outside that'd notice her. None so all she needed now was to open the window so she could light her cigarette and be done with it. She made sure it were unlocked and pushed upwards but the window wouldn't budge. She tried again but her small frame did nothing but rock the glass a little. Come on you worthless piece of shit. Open! She pushed at the window one more time and finally it cracked open. This window hadn't been opened since the last time they'd touched up the paint but it was working now. She opened it a little more and sat perched on the ledge as one foot dangled and the other one helped with her stability.
She lit a cigarette and took a drag as she relaxed her head back and pointed her mouth towards the window slowly releasing the toxins into the air. She was about three quarters the way through her cigarette when she heard a voice, some guy looking for a Marco, but she hadn't seen him so she stayed silent. The second time he called this males name out Charlie could hear him getting closer so took her final drag before letting the cigarette drop out the window. She waved the smoke towards the window the best she could trying to hide what she had just been doing. When a scrawny guy emerged her eyes widened as she expected the worst. He was probably going to lecture her and lead her back to the front to tell whoever was on duty what he'd caught her doing. She was confused when he started talking about games. When he explained that she needed to repeat Polo after he called Marco she slowly began to understand. "I'm sorry, i'm not very accustomed to that game. I've only ever played a few times." She could count on one hand how many times she'd played the game.
Hearing his question she paused looking out the window, "you have to have played them enough to know if you like them or not. Right?" Her attention shifted to Lucas as he came closer to introduce himself. Her lips curved into a smile just to be polite as she watched his awkward hand movements. "Charlie sounds better than stack girl don't you agree?" She asked, but it was up to him what he decided to call her. As he brought up what usual students did way back here her attention shifted back to the window. "I don't know what you're talking about." She played it cool but was lying through her teeth. Of course she knew all about the sex in the stacks rumors. She half expected to see two students going at it back here when she first showed up. She was relieved that it wasn't happening but given how many rumors she's heard you could never be too certain. "Do they study?"

Was this chick for real? He wasn't sure if she was being honest or just having fun picking on him, so he stayed silent for a moment just watching her for any sign that she had been fooling him. He couldn't even see a hint of laughter hidden behind her eyes so he took it as her being serious, and because it made him very uncomfortable he found himself laughing rubbing the back of his neck nervously. "I was hoping you were just kidding." He shook his head though her face made it even more evident that she wasn't, "do you even know how to kid? I joke, I joke." He put his hands up defeatedly infront of him hoping she wouldn't take what he said the wrong way. He knew chicks were silly about what was said about him, and he also knew that it was so easy for them to blow things way out of proportion. "You should play it again sometime. It's good fun..."
Listening to her even more he couldn't help but just stare infront of him wondering if this girl was for real. How did she get to be her age without playing games and enjoying her life? She just had to be kidding him he hoped, but still the expression on her face never changed and that worried him. "You didn't play many games as a child?" He repeated his question after tweaking it a little to be more specific. He listened intently to her answer feeling bad for the girl, but still he hoped that eventually she would jump up and holler surprise or something. She had to be joking him. He'd take this idea to his grave if he were to die today. "So what did you do for fun growing up? You had to do something right? And please don't tell me you were one of those people who just sat around reading books for years on end." Books weren't bad, they were nice escapes from reality, but there had to be more to life than words on a page.
So this chick had a name, but it was nothing like what he had expected. He thought it was going to be something sweet and elegant but Charlie? Charlie had been so masculine, he couldn't believe something like that had been given to such a small little girl like her. "That's got to be short for something right? Or did your mom just shoot for a boy?" It was plausible and he had heard stories about people thinking the sex was something straight up until birth. This could be one of those cases where the name could fit as a girls, so it all made sense to him. Then again most everything made sense depending on how well he bent and manipulated it to fit in with his ideas. "I like it though, a good strong name, solid." Not that this chick needed a solid, strong name but damnit he had to think of something to compliment her on right?
Even when he started to joke about what usually happened in the stacks with males and females she didn't seem to have a funny bone in her body. This was starting to scare him and he actually wanted to go up to her and try to find her control panel or something because she obviously could not be a human. She had to be some sort of hot cyborg or something. The geek inside of him found that extremely attractive as he took another step closer to her looking around wondering if he should explain himself. He watched as she picked her gaze up and he chuckled at her question. Her voice sounded so innocent as he looked behind him at all the books that lined the shelves. "I'm sure some of them could have studied, it is a library and all so it's not completely uncommon." He chuckled as he tried to get her to at least keep a smile. She was really making him work for it though today, not that he minded, but most chicks would be fits of giggles by now.
"I don't know if I should tell you what really goes on back here or not, you might not be ready to handle all of it." He smirked as he leaned on the wall right beside the window where she sat. "You sure you haven't heard about anything that goes on?" He threw his hands up in defeat as he looked her over, that hot cyborg as she seemed almost flawless for a girl his age and he grinned. "Fine, fine, you forced it out of me. It's been said that when you bring a buddy back here you're doing a lot more than studying if you know what I mean." He had hoped she could pick it up so he wouldn't have to explain it anymore. She looked like a smart cookie so he was sure that she could pick it up easily enough. "I take it you were back here for a smoke though? You're probably wondering what i'm doing back here too huh?" He chuckled shaking his head as he crossed his arms infront of his chest, "well it's not what you'd think, that's for sure." He wasn't coming here to meet his significant other for a romp in the stacks, not that it wouldn't be fun though. "I pissed some people off and i'm hiding out."

Charlie kept her eyes focused on Lucas once he became so physically nervous. Her shoulders pulled upwards in a shrug as she broke the stare she had on him and let her eyes fall to the floor. "I'm not really the kidding type." She'd be so awkward if she tried to kid around a little because she didn't know how she even was supposed to do it. Joking around was supposed to come easy for everyone but for her it was just weird. "I'd be kidding if I said I knew how to kid," her face scrunched up into a weird half smile that looked odd. Even just smiling left her with an uneasy feeling in her stomach. It's not that she hated being happy but given her history it just didn't happen too much. "Hard to play alone isn't it?"
He looked horrified as she found herself watching his animated facial features. His expression was often funny and hidden chuckles were all that'd escape from her. Here he was thinking this girl couldn't be real and in turn she was questioning his sanity. "Not many," she answered his first question and thought his jaw was going to fall off from hanging so low off of his face. Was her life really all that shocking? He must have been blowing this all out of proportion. His second question left her pondering an answer as she stared off in the distance imagining her childhood. She remembered getting moved around a lot and finally being forced to the all girls home. End of the line all the girls called it. "Does fighting count?" It was the one constant thing she did, but it wasn't her starting any of her altercations. She was fighting for survival in the system. "It wasn't all about the books..." she trailed off remembering her frequent trips to the library the orphanages had. The books were all torn and missing pages, probably found in dumpsters and on street corners, but her imagination was strong enough to fill in the missing gaps in the stories. "I did watch some TV too, whatever I could get on the rabbit ears."
"That's got to be short for something right?" The question had an immediate answer as she yawned and nodded, "Charlotte." Hearing herself use her entire first name was something she hadn't heard in a while and it was nice. It reminded her of her mother and what small virtue remained in her life. "I'd hope my mother was shooting for a girl," such a funny way of speaking this boy had. "At least I hope she was happy when she had a daughter." Talking in past tense was disappointing as her grandparents flashed through her mind. Who would just throw their granddaughter out on the streets because she reminded them of their dead daughter? Resentment was just one of the emotions Charlie felt towards her grandparents. "Uh, thanks?" He had complimented her name so she had to thank him right? She wished somewhere in this library there would be a book that'd teach her how to be normal but that was a long shot.
She paid close attention to his steps watching him come closer as her body started to tense up. She always became nervous around other people when they started invading her space. She could only look around for a second as he explained where they'd been, but her eyes fell right back on him refusing to break her stare wanting to watch his every move in case he tried something. He didn't look like the kind of guy that'd be foolish enough to throw himself at a girl but you never knew. Serial killers sometimes didn't look psychotic and yet they'd still lure people out and kill them. Her shoulders shrugged upwards when he asked once more if she'd heard anything. "I may have heard something or other," she informed him keeping it vague. He was extremely close and any closer she'd start having a panic attack probably. She could already feel her temperature starting to rise as her breathing became very slightly heavier.
If you know what I mean, she looked back towards the stacks before her eyes fluttered back to him. "Is that even comfortable?" Having your back pressed against shelves lined with books did not seem like something erotic or pleasing. "Are teenagers really that hard up for sex these days?" It was sad really the lengths teens would go to just to have sex. She hoped when she did finally lose her virginity she wouldn't turn into some sex crazed psycho who'd want to screw in stacks. "What gave you the first hint?" She looked down and saw that her cigarettes weren't the most concealed and he could probably smell it in the air still. She sighed glancing out the window nodding, "as long as you're not back here to give me a lecture on how smokings bad for me or it'll stunt my growth or something, pretty sure that happened long before cigs came into the picture." Charlie had a love - hate relationship with how small she was, but she was learning to slowly accept it.
"Pissed some people off? Hiding out? Who and what did you do?" Charlie leaned back and rested her head against the sill watching his movements carefully since he'd still been very close to her. "I guess you picked a good spot to hide. I've came back a couple of times and have never seen someone here," now she might have to find a new hiding spot with Lucas entering the picture. "Would you like me to leave so you can hide out in peace? I promise I won't let the cat out of the bag on where you are." She tried to show him a welcoming smile but it came out all wrong and twisted. |
