If tonight lived up to the word then the evening was sure to be an eventful one, after all who didn’t love a good show? Which is exactly how Derek foresaw the night playing out; people wearing masks and playing roles they otherwise would never be in if they weren’t given the chance to hide who they were, and this party was the perfect stage for them to test their acting abilities. He had high expectations they’d all fail miserably but that didn’t stop him from donning a mask and actually showing up to partake in the festivities himself; he had his own facade to portray to everyone in town, and he was slowly making that his reality. The old Darius was little by little becoming the face people would see staring back them when they looked at him, and even though he swore that man never went away there was no denying that he might have been hidden away inside of him. But it was time once again to let him come out and play, and he intended to get his fill of fun that he’d missed out on.
As expected most people weren’t any more exciting to be around than if they’d come without their masks on, and more than once he’d walked away from a person before boredom over took him and his whole night be ruined. And he most certainly could not be having that. Not if he planned to get to back to the man he once was, but like most things getting there apparently fell on his shoulders. Which is why he stepped up to the plate the moment he’d walked through the doors and found the least offensive woman to look at who was wondering around the party giving guests drinks; if he were going to play her the whole evening he’d need her to not look like a total dog, god forbid he have to look at an ugly mug the whole night when he sought her out to refill his glass. Even if the exchange was brief she’d need to have something to hold his attention, and luckily for this brunette she had enough breasts that they were almost falling out of her top; other men might try to beat him out for her attention, but he didn’t really care if they did as long as he got his drink. Which was the case now. Derek excused himself, without a word, from the boring woman he’d somehow engaged in a conversation with; for the life of him he couldn’t recall why, all he could think about was how her voice was making his ears bleed. Looking over his shoulder it instantly clicked why he’d gone over, she was rather attractive. He’d have had his way with her in a matter of minutes, he considered going back over to do just that but her voice echoed in his head and he turned from her and pushed further into the crowd to be rid of her for good.
In a matter of seconds she was a distant memory as his hazel eyes found an even more delicious looking woman; as his head began to lean to the side he could swear there was something familiar about her. Raising the glass in his hand to his lips he drained the last of the campaign that remained inside before placing it in the hands of a passerbyer; dismissing the man with a wave of his hand as he began to spout off about how he didn’t work there and some other such nonsense. None of which Derek cared about while his attention as still focused on the brunette he’d spotted across the room. Somehow she’d managed to steal his attention and she hadn’t even acknowledged his existence yet, but that was a minor detail that he’d soon correct. Licking his lips Derek’s gaze broke away from her to search the crowd for his drink wench, in his mind that’s exactly what she was, and was surprised when she popped up next to him with another drink in hand. Was she watching him? Cautiously taking the drink he faked a smile, ”You are good aren’t you sweetheart?”
”You ha-“ Derek’s index finger cut her off as it pressed against her soft lips to silence her, there was no reason for her to speak. Feigning amusement the corners of his lips remained turned up in a plastic smile, ”No reason to talk about it. You can show me later.” Winking at her Derek sent on her way with a slap on the ass, needing to be rid of her even though she might the girl he wound up going home with; not to his place oh no they’d go to hers so he wouldn’t have to worry about her coming around time and time again. Thankfully she took the hint and was lost in the crowd once more, and he was now able to figure out how to get that’s woman’s attention; turning to look in her direction once more he noticed two big brown doe eyes staring back in his direction, like him she apparently couldn’t help but stare. Smirking Derek’s hand rose into the air and he waggled his fingers in one of those sickeningly sweet condescending waves he’d seen people do time and time again, but as he began to make his way through the crowd towards her everything instantly went dark. At first he wasn’t sure if someone had just punched him and knocked him out, but he didn’t feel any pain so that couldn’t be the case. And as he began to feel people bump into him as they scrambled around to make their way to the doors he was piecing it all the together, and just as the red emergency lights clicked on it all came together. Of course the power went out, just when things might’ve gotten interesting.
Instead of moving with the sea of people as they rushed towards the door Derek went against the current and shoved his way through people to get to the nearest wall and watch the chaos unfold. Even in the dim lightening it was easy to make out the annoyance and fear written on some people’s faces, mother nature had out done him on this one she deserved a round of applause for the mass pandemonium she had caused; it’d be short lived as they all got through the doors and were free to go home, but for the moment it was a fine victory. Raising the glass he still clung to up to his lips he took a sip, not wanting to let the drink go to waste, his free hand pushed the mask up from covering his face. No need to hide behind it anymore, ”It wasn’t even fun while it lasted.” Derek scoffed and shook his head in disappointment, but his attention as quickly drawn to the mass of people as he heard shouts that the door wouldn’t open. Hiking his eyebrow up in curiosity his lips couldn’t help but curl up into a wicked smirk, ”Looks like the real party has just begun.”

Aubrey wasn't sure if going out tonight would be a good idea or not, but after some persuasion via phonecalls she agreed that she'd go. Donnie must have known that if he didn't give up on this she'd cave eventually, but she made it clear she'd meet him there. That way if she bowed out at the last minute there was nothing he could do, but Bree could never do that to Donnie so she bought both a dress and a mask to accomodate herself for the evening. She felt weird when she dressed herself up that night and stared in the mirror. This was a Valentines event where you should be going with your significant other, and yet Bree and Derek hadn't even spoken with one another in the past month and a half practically.
She tried not to think about him as she slipped on her sneakers, an accessory she's been known to sneak under most of her usual dresses, and after grabbing a jacket she went outside to wait for her ride. Luckily the owner of Duke's was heading to the ball so she grabbed a ride with them, and once at the event she thanked them and they parted ways before they even reached the door. After giving them the ticket and walking inside she could not believe it was as beautiful as the mayor had made it out to be, and she was greeted by the staff who took her coat and gave her a ticket so she could pick it up later. She tried to look for Donnie but she hadn't even seen what he was going to wear tonight so how would she find him?
She didn't dwell on it as she walked through the crowd greeting and socializing with those who said something to her. There was one guy inparticular that started to annoy her as he kept right behind her spouting off lame ass remarks trying the flatter her. "Damn girl, your bodies so addicting, you should have a warning stamped on your ass like a box of cigarettes." That one had taken the cake as she snapped around to look up at the man who was now under fire. "You know what, you're right, I should have a warning stamped on my ass. It should say that men like you, losers I think they're called, should keep their distance if they want to keep all their limbs." He laughed as he stepped closer challenging her as she watched him closely so he couldn't touch her.
Luckily Bree took the lights out as her chance to disappear, there was no way she could get into a fight with a guy of his stature (especially in this god awful dress), so she slipped through a crowd as the red emergency lights came on and she looked around making sure he was nowhere to be found. She let out a sigh of relief as she felt herself getting tugged in the direction of the door. People all around were slamming into her as they made their way to the door, and she sure hoped she wouldn't have bruised shoulders by the end of tonight with how forceful these people were being. Luckily she got through the crowd and collapsed against the wall trying to catch her breath. She rubbed her shoulders as she leaned her back against the wall and stared at the scene infront of her not bothering to look around.
When she heard people shouting about the door not opening her eyes widened as she pulled herself off of the wall and started to walk towards the door closer to what was happening. What do you mean the door won't open? Maybe you're not pulling it hard enough!" You could hear people shouting at one another as Bree snaked through the crowd towards the front staring at everyone in disbelief. Was it true, were they really locked in there? Bree was starting to feel squishes as she wiggled back out through the crowd to the back of the room, breathing heavily as it'd taken a lot out of her to fight the current of the crowd. She looked and noticed a person standing against the wall not looking bothered at all by their current situation.
She walked over but the closer to the person she'd gotten she saw him take his mask off, and there infront of her Derek stood as she stopped dead in her tracks. She still had a mask on so she could turn around and maybe she wouldn't even be recognized, but with what little of her face was hidden she knew he could tell it'd been her. She had thought about what would happen when the two ran into each other before, but now that they were face to face she had no idea what was supposed to happen. Instead of saying anything to him, what could she possibly say after the pair hadn't talked in so long, she instead walked up to the wall and collapsed once more on it exhausted from all that fighting she'd had to do just to get out of the sardined mess. She slid down the wall until she was sitting on the floor, her dress sprawled out all around her, and she just closed her eyes wishing this all to be just a dream.

Aubrey Jenkins. Swallowing discreetly his eyes cut away from her; he hadn’t thought he’d actually see her tonight, and even if he had the misfortune of running into her he hadn’t thought she’d affect him this way. Apparently his attempts to bury how he felt about her wasn’t going to be as easy as he’d initially thought it would be, so much for booze always being able to solve his problems. At the moment all it was doing was conflicting him with so many different emotions.
He hated it, hated feeling, and wanted to going back to feeling nothing. Damn her.
Derek couldn’t help himself as he tried to sneak another peek at the stunning woman, but she was no longer standing before him and had he not caught the glint of her dress in the light there was no telling how long it’d be before he’d have known she was next to him. His head slowly craned around in her direction, taking a rather large sip of his champagne and nearly emptying the glass as he did so, watching her sink to the floor in what seemed like defeat. His brow knit together in concern but as he kept looking upon her it became mixed with disappointment, seeing her bow out defeat lit a fire in him. She was supposed to be a fighter, she was supposed to be strong, she was supposed to be the one who would voice her opinion about him not caring if it hurt his feelings; well maybe she cared but it only seemed so after the guilt ate her up and she wanted to defuse the situation before he flew off the handle. Derek didn’t care if she was tired of fighting, or was unwilling to start one. He’d do it for her; hopefully it’d help him push out those feelings he didn’t want to cling to anymore. ”She gives up. And I haven’t even thrown any heavy punches.” Smirking maliciously Derek thrust his nearly empty glass at the woman who was approaching him, the same barwench he had been working all evening. He might have to handle her first but he couldn’t help but egg Bree on further, holding up his fists in front of him like a boxer would as he began to sway from side to side. ”Come on Jenkins round one hasn’t even started yet and we both know you want in this fight. There has to be something you want to yell at me about…cause a scene, hit me, call me names. Do anything but sit there like you lost your fight. Makes you unattractive.”
Exhaling an over dramatic sigh Derek’s eyes rolled in annoyance, though not because of Aubrey no it was that damn barwench who was still hovering around him for his attention. Like a moth to the flame she apparently wanted to get burnt, and he’d be happy to oblige. ”Hold on a second darling. Someone apparently wants to steal your attention and we both know how you want me to focus solely on you.” Derek’s lips stretched out into a plastic smile as he turned from Bree to look at the other woman, his gaze instantly drawn to her breasts but who wouldn’t stare at those things. A throaty chuckle came out of him after a beat and his eyes cut up to meet hers, the way they were screaming at him to just take her was almost too much but he refrained from doing so and directed his index finger at her face. ”How about you do me a favor sweetheart.” Tapping the end of her nose with his finger Derek scrunched up his own in the cute way people did with flirting with each other, he never understood it but it worked it seemed. She seemed to melt from his touch and the look in her eyes became distant as if she were day dreaming, far to easy. He thought to himself, the corners of his lips curling up into a self-satisfied smirk. ”Get me the hardest drink you have…and well we can’t exclude her can we?” Derek directed her attention to Bree with a mere glance of his eyes, but seized her hands in his own and pulled her in closer to draw her back in to him. ”If you have any Malibu, make her a rum and coke. If not she’ll make due, won’t you Jenkins?” Not waiting for her answer Derek dismissed the girl by turning away from her to focus once again on Aubrey, his body tingling all over in anticipation to see what, if anything, she had up her sleeve for him.
It’d be dreadfully boring if she completely gave up, if the girl had no more fight in her at all that might just be all he needed to get over her.
Really taking her in, even as she’d been sitting on the ground with her gown sprawled out around her, he couldn’t help but catch his breath. His eyes softened slightly as he looked at the beauty before him; she was a sight in even just jeans and a t-shirt, but seeing her all dressed up always managed to catch him off guard. ”You look stunning, but you always do.” He told her sincerely, though his voice managed to grow even softer than it normally at the end of his observation. As if he weren’t sure he should actually say it out loud, but he had and he didn’t regret it. It was just sure to send mixed signals and confuse her on what game he was playing at; even he wasn’t sure, he should have just walked away. ”So what was your big plan to come over here and talk to the mystery guy leaning up against the wall? And then it turned out to be me and for once in your life you can’t find a damn thing to say.” Back to his cynical self he quickly masked whatever had written all over his face with a sarcastic grin, folding his arms over his chest he chose to keep his distance from her; whenever he got to close it was hard to control himself, damn this woman for having such a power over him. ”That’s a complete shame. Hopefully his ironic statement would get a rise out of her and she’d leave instead of him, but with the locked doors they’d still be trapped together for god knows how long. It was looking like it just might be a long night.

Leave it to Derek to not know when to just leave her alone, and to add insult to injury he was bouncing around like he was some boxer taking swings right next to her. She groaned as she peaked her eye open to watch him, and she had to admit the man did have a point. She wished she could just stand up and punch him in the face, make it as bloody as he had made her cousins, but for now all she did was sit and try to ignore him. It was the best she could do given what was going on right now and all the screaming and yelling the other guests were doing wasn't helping. Him calling how she was acting unattractive pissed her off as she finally stood staring him down. "Do you think I give a shit what you think of me right now?"
Bree could have went off on some tangent but watched as the other female stepped into the picture and Derek started to pay attention to her. Bree cocked an eyebrow as she could tell exactly where he was looking. She of course peaked down at her own dress which hadn't been filled out nearly as much as this other girls, but it's not like he ever seemed to care before so why should it matter now? Because Bree had just been called unattractive and was still pissed off about that of course. Bree could feel herself wanting to get sick as she watched how he'd acted with this other chick, and at the same time it was hilarious to see how this chick was eating every single word of his up. Unfortunately Bree was too pissed off to laugh though.
As he included Bree in his drink order she scoffed shaking her head aggravated as she leant back against the wall staring off into the sea of people. The way he was acting with this chick Bree wanted to just holler at him to get a fucking room already, but as she heard him say her name she glanced over giving him a look of death. "I don't want anything from you, and especially not if it's made by her," his little wench seemed to look at Bree like she was crazy and Bree just stared between both Derek and her trying to figure out what the hell was going on. It became obvious that he was just using her for drinks, but Bree couldn't help but think that there could have been more to it than that. What if she would have never came here tonight, would he have brought another woman home? Weren't they still dating? Ugh, this whole entire thing was so fucked up and she couldn't make heads or tails of it at all.
"I should have known you couldn't get through the night without a drink. God forbid you have to face the truth without your crutch of booze, typical." Bree was finally coming out to play in this little fight he wanted, and damn if she weren't going to throw some punches along the way. She had expected the worst, but when he opened his mouth a compliment actually formed and she was stunned, left standing there confused by his words. Why wouldn't he have just said another comment that'd piss her off so she could haul off and deck him or something? Why did it have to be something sweet? "Um, thank you." He gave her a compliment so she had to be polite and thank him right? Luckily he turned back into the other Derek that she just wanted to punch as he started to talk again. "You really want me to tell you what's on my damn mind?"
Bree thought about it for a second and shrugged seeing no harm, it's not like she could get more pissed off with him, and since they were obviously not going anywhere for a while why should she keep it all bottled in? "Fine, you want me to tell you what's on my mind? How about for the past month all I could think about was how someone I...I cared about so much could be such a fucking monster." She finally let him have it as she stood her ground stepping towards him closing the insignificant gap to begin with. "How instead of being logical you'd fucking beat someone and pull a knife on them in my house! My house Derek, you don't do that shit in my house. I don't care what the hell you do on your own but shit like that isn't supposed to happen at my place." She shook her head as she remembered her poor cousin that day, and how Derek didn't seem to care at all about what he'd just done.
"So you want a fight well here it is." she watched as the chick returned with two glasses, one for her obviously as she snarled while looking from Bree to her designated glass. Bree picked it up looking at the darker liquid figuring she'd managed to find some Malibu and coke but her intent was not on drinking it, but instead she threw the glass at Derek soiling his outfit. "Didn't look good on you anyway." She shrugged, pissed now.

Good he wanted her to be angry with him, hell he wanted her to hate him, and if the best way to do that was to make all the anger she’d yet to unleash on him become known so be it. Even if he was trying to let her go he’d still push her to the very last second until they were apart. Derek slowly let his hands fall to his sides as an overly satisfied smirk rose to the surface, leaning in closer to her she could see the gleam of excitement in his eyes; an all to knowing look staring back at her that she had out right lied to him just now, even if she was telling herself it was the truth they both knew he had more of an effect on her then she was trying to let on. Sliding his hands into his pockets Derek met her stare coolly, ”Of course you care what I think Aubrey.” The cocky expression written all over his face was to taunt her even further, she couldn’t lie to him at least not about that; no matter how hard she tried she wasn’t a good liar, and Derek would see right through her as if she were transparent.
As cavalier as he was handling the situation with this other woman right in front of Bree he knew exactly what he was doing, he could feel her rich brown eyes burning holes through him for focusing on another woman. He’d bet she wanted to slap the smug expression off his face because he knew just what he was doing right in front of her and didn’t give a damn if he was stepping all over her heart and left her broken; he wasn’t one of those guys to handle this with situation with baby gloves though, he’d always been one to enjoy the dramatic flare and make sure it was cold hard lesson.
Placing his hand over his heart as if she had deeply wounded him Derek looked at her with the most unsympathetic eyes as his lower lip jutted out into a pathetic pout, even though his eyes would give him away he couldn’t help but play the sad wounded fool in love that she’d cut so deeply with her words. ”Aubrey you’re killing me here…just drive the knife in deeper so we can be done with it.” In the blink of an eye he was once again smirking at her like the smug bastard he was, and thankfully the other woman hadn’t heard her comment or she wouldn’t get a drink. She really shouldn’t be so nasty when he was offering to help her through this dark hour they were in, but of course she’d never thank him for being this way; she’d just stare him down with such hatred, such judgment, in those delicious brown eyes of hers and she’d never truly understand him. This was who he was, looking back at their time together he had no clue who that other man had been and often wondered if he’d been walking with someone else in control of his body.
The light vanished from his face at her words and he could only look at her with such disdain, with such a hatred he had thought he’d never hold for her. Though he tried to look as if her words hadn’t fazed him he knew the inner struggle he was going through lashing out; she had no idea why he was drinking, hell she was never around when he drank, so who the hell was she to judge him. All she probably saw was the makings of an alcoholic, a sad pathetic man who would turn to drinking so he wouldn’t have to deal with problems. She was right but he’d never admit that. Unable to meet her stare any longer he looked away from her towards the dark ground below them, wishing it’d swallow him up; it was as if he’d been in this situation before, a bit of déjà vu. He didn’t dwell on the thought long, he couldn’t as it wasn’t important. ”Don’t pretend you know me Aubrey. We can both say that’s the one thing I was good at, not letting you get to know me.” Meeting her gaze once again with a hardened stare Derek really wished he had that drink now, his head turned away from her to look for that damn girl with his drink. ”Hurry up sweetheart.” He growled out through clenched teeth even though the woman was nowhere in sight to hear his command.
Even in their darkest moment there seemed to be a ray of light to shine through and possibly give him hope that he was wrong, but he’d sooner shun out the light and keep them in darkness; even if the woman’s radiance was blinding Derek made sure the moment was short lived.
Waving his hand before her to usher her forward he waited to hear what was on her mind; it wasn’t really what he was going for, he’d honestly have preferred nonsense that he wouldn’t understand. So he wouldn’t be able to make sense of it and they could go on disliking each other from this moment on, but if she were going to indulge him he would indulge her and stand there in silence as she voiced what had been bothering her since they’d last seen each other. He didn’t dare utter a word as she spoke, he’d learned it was best to let her get it all out and not interrupt. But that didn’t stop his eyes from rolling at her naivety; she had known exactly who he was before saying yes to going out with him, he’d given her chances to cut him out of her life but she had refused to let him go, and the first sign of trouble she was going to pretend she hadn’t known this monster, as she eloquently put it, was inside him. Who was she trying to fool? Because Derek wasn’t dumb enough to believe she’d actually thought that side of him had vanished entirely, she may have hoped it had but that was a different matter entirely. He hadn’t noticed until she began to address him once again how much closer she’d gotten to him and his eyes widened in shock but he didn’t try to back away instead he stood his ground and did all he could to not grab hold of her and silence her lips with his own; his heart beat like an out of control drummer as he stared at those delicious lips and wanted a bite. Damn her.
His body temperature had begun to rise but thankfully when the woman returned it seemed to gain him a little breathing room, and enabled him to take a step back from her as he took hold of his own drink. Flashing a charming smile at the woman as a thank you for doing as she had been told, but before he could taste what she’d gotten him he felt a something cod and wet hit him. Slowly craning his head around like some lunatic who might attack whatever idiot had thrown their drink on him he knew exactly who it had been, staring at the brunette with a fire in his eyes his eyes flit between her and his now soaked clothes; the other woman was quick to find napkins on the refreshment table and come back to try and dry him off. Slapping her hand away he took the napkins from her to do the job himself, though it was in vain. ”Oh don’t lie darling anyone with eyes could see how you look at me with such lust. But go ahead lie to yourself more and more it’s what you’re good at, not seeing the truth right in front of you and looking for the worst in me.” Looking up at her Derek was clearly pissed off himself and he threw the useless napkins down on the ground. ”News flash sweetheart I told you not to even bother months ago so you’re bitching is unnecessary.”
Raising his glass in salute he slammed it back and emptied it in one gulp, once again thrusting his empty glass at the other woman. ”Another.” He’s gaze didn’t falter from Bree this time, how could they she had disliked him looking another woman she had decided she’d piss him off; he had actually been in a rather good mood. But the way she planned on playing she was going to attempt raise his blood pressure and blow his top. If she wanted to have him be the bad guy then he’d gladly be the bad guy, it was what he was fucking good at. ”Are you done whining over what an unremorseful, reckless, impulsive, dick that I am? I won’t ever fucking apologize…and if you can’t see why I did it good! Just hate me for hurting you, your family, your friends, hate me Bree for hurting everyone. Because it’s what I do…I’ve always done it, you just became blind to it and thought you changed me in some delusion you allowed yourself to believe.” Speaking through clenched teeth his voice dropped lower and lower as he moved closer to her, leaning as closer as he could until there was barely a sliver of air between their faces. Rage and passion radiating off of him, but he would doubt she’d ever know why. She didn’t want to. And why would she want to know that the reason he had attacked her cousin had been because he cared for her deeply, that those strong feelings he held for her led him to reckless and hurt someone; he wouldn’t have felt remorse anyway, but he definitely didn’t feel any for having done it for her. She didn’t understand what it meant when he truly cared for people and would do anything for them so it was best to just push her away, wasn’t it? "I won't ever be who you want me to be so why fight for something you won't have?"

The more his attitude started to shine through she kept wondering how she could feel anything for this man. She knew she'd had a problem of liking the bad boys, she'd done it a few times in the past, but the difference with Derek was that she'd straight up fallen for him. Without ever defining her feelings she'd somehow allowed his entire being to wash away all of her rational behavior and make her feel for him. It was weird but unlike any other relationship she'd been in he'd never asked to hear the three words everyone seemed to thrive for. As if those three words defined an entire relationship, the thought alone ridiculous, and yet that's how everyone other than these two based their relationship. It seemed Derek and Aubrey based their relationship off of arguements and tempers, and yet after each and every conflict the two seemed in a stronger relationship. While so many others based their lives around love Bree and Derek based it on the spike of blood pressure it'd seem. It was them. It was normal.
His words fell on deaf ears as she stared off at the gaps around them where people should be dancing and enjoying themselves, but instead were scrambling to find an exit. She knew if she did not acknowledge him he'd have thought he'd won and would keep running his mouth, so as she turned her attention back to him she lifted her mask up off of her face and held it in her hands. "Derek, this may come as a surpise to you but I don't need your approval for everything. I didn't wake up this morning just begging to the gods that you'd care about how I looked tonight. I didn't do any of this for you, so why don't you come off that high horse of yours before he kicks you to the ground and stomps on that smug look of yours?" Bree may have cared about what he thought of her, but when she was as aggravated as now she ignored that feeling.
Having the other woman around made Bree want to stab them both, so it seemed fitting when he was making his off collar remark about how she should just sink the knife in deeper to his chest. Bree forced a smirk as she could only imagine diving a knife into this guys chest and rotating it. He was the one person that could piss her off this successfully with only one or two words said. Everyone knew it wasn't all just about the words, but also how they're said. She could hear every tone he laced those words with and she was not impressed. She kept looking back between him and the other female there wondering why in the world she wasn't just leaving already, and soon she got her wish as the male pushed her off in some direction to get his drinks. She knew the chick hadn't heard her, she'd been too focused on lover boy to even notice Bree, but that didn't stop her from running it for her own benefit.
When he broke the stare and shifted his attention to the ground Bree took that as defeat as a confident smirk soon rested on her lips. His blubbering about her not knowing him just made her laugh. "Right, because you have to know someone before you understand what motivates them. Just face it Darius, knowing you has nothing to do with the fact that it's obvious drinking is how you cope. When shit starts getting too serious you're quick to have a drink to numb whatever it is you're feeling. You're so afraid that without alcohol you're actually going to force yourself to feel something you shouldn't." Bree was on a roll tonight, but she knew her victory would be short lived and he'd be back to trying to get the upper hand soon enough. It's what they did, whether or not either would admit, but they'd pass back and forth minimal victories that'd push their relationship forward. People on the outside looking in would think they're insane, perhaps they were, but why mess with a system that worked? Sure enough, she called it, his stare came back as she could tell he was edging for that drink he wanted.
This was something different though, instead of continuing with his snarky remarks he actually ushered her to take center stage and tell him what the hell was wrong with her. Bree did exactly that as she got what she wanted off of her chest, but she knew he'd only use it as fuel to the fire and would start some other pissing contest with her afterwards, but right now she just did not care. She could tell that her words were like daggers pissing him off with every syllable but it did not stop her. That is until that chick reappeared and Bree wondered what in the world she was even doing back? Oh right, in all this chaos Derek had managed to place a drink order. Without thinking Bree took the drink she'd made for her, per his request, and doused him with it even tossing the cup at his feet for insult. Most people might have been afraid of him as he craned his neck over to see her, the culprit, but all she did was stand hands on hips watching his every move. This was bound to be good.
"Oh, i'm sorry, I forget that you seem to match lust with anger, I can't believe I didn't remember. How silly of me." She rolled her eyes, "it's kind of hard not to see the worst in you when you so easily wear it on your sleeve." She reached out and tugged at his sleeve smirking as she knew she'd finally found something that could have pushed him over the edge even more. She laughed, having clearly lost it, when he yet again brought up his numerous times he tried to push her away in the past. "The only reason you want me gone so bad Derek is because you're just afraid to be happy for once in your damn life, you don't think a girl could do that for you, but news flash i'm pretty sure I already have!" She knew she'd made him happy, Thanksgiving being testament to that, and she'd always figured that him pushing her away was just his idea of trying to ignore the positive feelings she brought with her.
She watched as he gulped the drink down, ushering for another, and just shook her head knowing that he would turn even bitchier with more alcohol in his system. "You mean to tell me there's a reason why you put a fucking knife to my cousin? Are you stupid or just ridiculous?" She shook her head unable to see things how he had, but if the tables were turned he probably would have been just as pissed. Well if he'd been a woman like her, if it'd happened with him still a man the scene would have probably been a turn-on. "I DIDN'T BELIEVE I CHANGED YOU!" She yelled as a few people glanced over and she only darted her attention to them for seconds before moving it back to him. "That's the whole point about all of this Derek is that I never wanted to change you." She spoke the truth as she stared at him, dead eyed, before shaking her head. "But I can't have you coming at my family just because you're pissed off or jealous, whatever it was you did it for." She shook her head again before she stayed silent watching him come closer, closer, until their was barely any room for either of them to breathe.
His last question had her thinking as she looked up into his eyes, all the rage in his entire body emitting through them, and all she could do was shrug her shoulders as she glanced down at the floor. "Ever stop and think that maybe you're what I want? She sighed unsure if she should admit anything or not. "How everytime i'm with you I have to catch my breath because when you get close to me it's like all the wind gets knocked out of me? Or how about how you're the only person that'll actually challenge me to go the extra mile to make sure I get something done right the first time? Don't forget how you're the one person who I can't be near without getting these stupid fucking butterflies even after so long. Not to mention the fact that i've actually fallen for someone who doesn't even believe in happiness. So you're right I guess, why fight for someone who gives me everything that I could ask for and has me head over heels for them? I must have been an idiot for falling..."
Refusing to be close to him anymore she stepped back a few paces and could see his barwench coming into view with a new glass for him. "So why don't you just go and drown your sorrows in that glass, that skirt, or wherever the fuck you want because I think we're done here." She pointed to draw his attention to the chick behind him standing there with his drink. She could tell the other chick had claimed Bree's stepping back as a victory and she just laughed rolling her eyes. "He doesn't think anything more of you than just a pair of tits and a drink honey, don't kid yourself, you really think he'd want more out of you? Doubtful considering he throws his own girlfriend under the bus." Her eyes darted at him for just a second as she called herself his girlfriend, a smirk creeping across her lips as she was feeling empowered. "So, should we make the break up official so can go off and fuck some troll to pretend you're over me?"
all I need is just a little emotion

Derek only half attempted to his cover his mouth with his hand to hide the patronizing smile that shown brightly on his face, accompanied with the sarcastic laughter of a mad man; even if he lost his mind he’d never hold her words for anything more than face value. Anyone else might have bought into what she was saying but Derek wasn’t anyone, and he had the advantage of her knowing her just as she knew him; he refused to believe she did but it was painfully obviously. Looking her dead in the eye he could only look at her with pity for lying to herself and him about how she felt; even if it was such a little thing as how he perceived her, it was still sad how she’d gone that root. But not sad enough to silence the laughter that kept tumbling out of him, holding up his hand to ask for a second to collect himself Derek managed to stifle the mocking laughter and stand composed before; his body shaking slightly still from the incident.
”The fact you actually think I’d believe that shows how out of your own mind you are right now.” He informed her on the sliver of a condescending smirk as he took a step closer to her, and leaned in so he could get a better look into those rich chocolate eyes and see just how much she didn’t believe the words herself. ”Angry you tell yourself you don’t care but you do. You have a little voice in the back of your head begging and pleading for me to look your way.” Being this close to her wasn’t the wisest decision on his part, his eyes stole a longing glance at her lips, but like always she could draw him in. Licking his lips hungrily his gaze lingered on her luscious lips a beat longer than necessary before returning to her eyes once again and continuing on, ”And you hope when I do that I’ll be so enticed by what I see that I’ll always want a taste. You can say you don’t but we both know you do.” He was close enough to feel the heat of her breath on his skin, to inhale that heavenly vanilla scent, and to taste the deliciousness of her lips by barely brushing his own against hers as he spoke.
Blinking he quickly pulled himself out of the trance he’d allowed himself to fall into and backed away from her, the look of desire written on his face vanished and was instantly replaced by that smug look of pride in himself. Regardless of if she had seen how still longed to touch her, kiss her, or any other intimate thing he might wish to do he convinced himself it’d be easily dismissed as his normal womanizing self that knew he could get any women even they were as pissed off at him as the brunette before him clearly was. And oh could he get her if he still wanted to; of course he still did, there was no denying that in his heart but he was trying not to listen to that organ. How could a stupid organ control how someone felt about another person, it seemed ridiculous. And that thought alone was why he could tell himself to ignore whatever he was feeling at that moment, besides feeling the need to upset her.
”And what’s wrong with that?!” Derek’s eyes widened in madness, as he looked to her for an answer. She acted as if she had them all so perhaps she could enlighten him on what was so wrong with his way of living; it’d worked for him in the past and the only thing that had changed was he now had the affections of this girl who wanted him to feel something. But every time he did it scared him, and brought him nothing but trouble. ”What’s wrong with wanting to be numb to feelings? All those annoy fuckers seem to do is bring me nothing but grief and misery…And why would I want to feel that way?” Derek’s brows arched up in challenge. Did she have an answer to his questions? Because if she did he’d shocked that Aubrey Jenkins could answer questions about feelings, the girl who was more afraid them than even he might be. Pointing at her knowingly Derek waggled his index finger in her face as he used to do, a superior about him as he did so as if he’d figured some great mystery out himself without needing her help at all. ”You can’t tell me why can you? Because you’re as scared as I am…You should just follow my lead and drink until you don’t feel a damn thing Bree, you might actually prefer it to your usual method of pushing people away when feelings come up.” A low blow on his part, especially since the times she tried to chase him off he didn’t run away like the others. And had made her face her feelings even if it was a slow process but if she was going to swing below the belt he would fight just as dirty, it was the only way he knew how to fight. ”Although I should applaud you because for you it works apparently.” Derek’s hands rose into the air and soon enough the palms of his were connecting in a slow rhythmic fashion, a slow clap for the woman who managed to do what he apparently could not; she was more impressive than he had thought, if he’d known this side of her he may have tried to get to know her sooner. This whole encounter might be going differently and they’d already have their clothes off as nothing would need to be said, just hateful glances filled with endless sexual tension; which could be how they were at the moment he just refused to take note of such things.
She had wasted her one shot at free alcohol, he wouldn’t be helping her get more with the little tantrum she was throwing; throwing the cup at his feet, the little defiant stare down, he was tempted to bend her over his knee and spank her. A smile unnoticeable smile twitched the corner of his lip at how wonderful an idea it was.
”Oh you’re precious.” After she was finished playing with his sleeve that same sleeved arm rose up into the air so his palm could find her cheek and caress it lovingly as one might someone they cared for, or when belittling someone; he hoped she took his actions to fall among the later. ”Sweetheart I’m sure you’ve heard of angry sex, lust. You merely have to desire the person even if you’re angry at them…The two really go hand in hand.” Ironic he should be talking about their own situation without being so direct about it. As the pad of his thumb ran over her cheek bone he looked at her as if she didn’t know anything and wished he could help her see things more clearly, but he could only teach someone willing to learn to not some blinded by rage; maybe another day they’d continue their lesson. Patting her cheek he leaned in pressed his lips to her forehead, ”Then see the worst in me I don’t care.”moving away from her he shrugged indifferently, but knew that he was probably back to confusing the hell out of her; all his actions contradicting the words that came out of his mouth, most times. ”Happiness Bree? Oh I can be happy.” Chuckling at her expense he fixed the sleeves of his suit jacket, even if she’d ruined it and his shirt he still would keep up appearances. ”Now how I get to that happiness might differ from what you’re talking about but I assure you I can be happy. Causing other people pain is my pleasure.” Raising his eyebrows suggestively he was more or less hinting at how he’d hurt her cousin, among other people he had hurt over the years, but to get to her he’d have to go for the spot where it hurt. And that apparently was with her family.
”Aubrey, Aubrey, Aubrey you’re only able to see what is right in front of you. You don’t even care what your cousin may have said or done to have gotten such a reaction from me…Though I admit pulling the knife of him was rather impulsive and I put no thought into it, but I assure you things aren’t as black and white as you see them.” Knitting his brows together Derek considered what he’d just said, it wasn’t exactly painting him the light of the bad guy like he’d been hoping for. His eyes darted around feverishly to figure out how to correct the problem, and then it hit him. ”I’m not stupid, we both know that.” His index finger moved between the two so she couldn’t think he was talking to anyone else, ”Ridiculous…not that either, but I might be crazy. Hitting a guy I don’t know for no reason what am I thinking? Guess I wasn’t, always been a throw punches first ask questions later kind of guy.” Forcing a smug grin to try and further piss her off he quickly realized she might read into what he said, but hoped she was still to pissed off to pick up on it and ask questions. It was best she didn’t and just believed he’d done what he had for no reason other than to be the monster that he was.
Derek’s eyes grew wide in mock horror as her voice came out a rather level, more than loud enough to draw the attention of onlookers who’d been paying them no mind at all until she’d decided to raise her voice and cause a scene. Good. On the inside he was overjoyed but to those looking on he tried to play innocent as if he hadn’t a clue why she was yelling, shrugging in uncertainty at the people closest to them he turned to look at her once more in amusement. This was what he’d wanted all along; her to yell and get angry, he was even hoping for a slap to the cheek. Because it was all too clear where things were headed. ”The fact you didn’t realize I was still this beast lying in wait proves you thought I had changed into some knight in shining armor. And come off it Jenkins! I didn’t know he was your cousin the idiot didn’t tell me even when I asked, instead he insulted me so he got what he had coming to him. Maybe next time he won’t run his mouth when I ask him who he is.” His eyes narrowed and stared her down in annoyance and frustration, he was angry she had formed all these opinions that he would attack her family simply because he could; apparently asking her cousin what had happened wasn’t on her to do list, or the lame had spun a tangled web of lies. Being as close as he was now he hoped she could see the look of disgust he had for her and how she already had her set opinions, even though he shouldn’t care; his internal battle was still raging on and he wished it would just sort itself out.
He was taken aback by her answer and could look upon with her uncertainty that he’d heard her wrong, she couldn’t have said he was what she wanted. She just couldn’t. He tried to keep the stern look on his face but the edge began to melt away as he listened to her, but he still couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Aubrey couldn’t be saying this it all seemed so out of place and time at the moment. ”You must have been…” The words came out before he could stop them and he quickly clenched his teeth together to keep from saying anything more, the hardness from before returning as her speech had ended and he no longer had to feel his heart strings tongue for causing this woman pain. But he was so conflicted; unable to meet her eyes his feel to the ground once again, as he tried to figure out what had just happened. It still seemed unreal, something no one would ever have said to him; so how could it possibly be real?
Looking back up at her as she began to speak again Derek’s cold stare turned onto the other woman as Bree pointed her out, snatching the glass from her hand before turning back round to face Bree. ”It’s not drowning my sorrows darling. It’s forgetting you and how you care.” He said the word as if it were poison, as if he truly didn’t believe she had ever cared for him. She didn’t get to be the cold cynical asshole he did. His eyes nearly rolled up into his head as she spoke up once again to scare off the woman who he’d be using for the night, and he knew all too well the big breasted imbecile would believe her. She was speaking the truth though; she was only tits and a drink, nothing more nothing less. At the word girlfriend his eyes cut back to her as he became confused, scratching the back of his head he stood there a second dumbfounded ass eh carried on. But as she finished the corners of his mouth turned up into the most cynical smile that lit up his eyes, a devilish chuckle emitting out of him as he came closer towards her. His finger extended in her direction, ”You think you’re still my girlfriend? Oh sweetheart we broke up over a month ago, when you didn’t try to talk to me about this like an adult…I wasn’t going to wait around for you. But if you need the words I can happily say them.” Getting right in her face he kept smiling like the over pretentious prick he was, his cheek primed and ready for the smack it’d be receiving. ”We’re done. Finished. Over…And there will be no pretending you’ll be a distant memory in matter of minutes.” He lied as he held up his drink so she could be reminded of how he’d drown his sorrows he was ready to let her go, all she had to do be done with himself.

She was impressed with how well he thought he knew her, with every smirk and knowing glance he gave her, but in her mind he couldn't be more wrong. He was right when saying that she did care about how he saw her, most of the time, but he was failing to realize that for the past month she hadn't cared at all. If she had she would have found reasons to "bump" into him around the city, to get even that single glance of acceptance she wanted so many times before, but she had lost all respect for the man who didn't even have the decency to explain himself when all she asked for were answers. Lucas had told her what had happened from his view point. He had went to the door, been smart mouthed like usual, and ended up with a bloody mouth a knife to his throat. He had told her he'd done nothing to provoke the man to reach the degree he had, and yet with Derek it didn't take but a nudge to send him over the edge. Bree knew it was unhealthy to care about someone in such distress but she couldn't help it. He may have been rough around the edges but she still saw him as a diamond.
"Let me make this very clear to you," she stood her ground even as the pair were very close to one another. "I may have been foolish enough to need your stamp of approval before but not now. Don't take this fucking night away from me by saying it has everything to do with you. I could care less if I saw that smug face of yours all night. I would have probably had a better time if you hadn't been around. I could have been around the people that actually care about me and don't try to be-little me just to prove some point to themselves. You may think you're winning right now Darius but you've already lost. I could care less about how you see me tonight, after the last time I saw you i'm done trying to impress, got it?" You could tell she was being honest, her words flowing before she even had time to comprehend and string them together in her mind. She partially still cared, she always would, and with his lips so close to her that heart of hers skipped a beat. If only that'd made for a more pleasant encounter but infact she was left with a clenched jaw as she pushed him away at the shoulders. "Keep your distance will you?"
Watching him back away this time she did not take it as a victory but instead saw it for what it had truly been, him distancing himself from a mistake. She'd seen that look in his eyes plenty of times before when he'd done something wrong, and for tonight she had been the something wrong. He had let himself get too close to her and he was pulling himself away. As if their little battle wasn't bad enough she actually took witness to a battle within him. She was confused, unsure of exactly what that battle raging in him was about, but she was sure any question would be met by deaf ears. His question had broken her out of her own mini trance she'd put herself into trying to figure him out, and as he continued and brought up more about feelings she just sighed. She was not the right person to be talking about this shit to and he knew it. She could tell that was exactly the reason he was bringing all these things up right now, just to get another shot off at her, and after each question posed he knew he'd had her stumped on an answer. "Feelings aren't always about grief and misery..." she mused the thought though hardly believed it herself. Now had been the perfect example, she'd been feeling happy to go to the event and now she felt miserable. Emotions were tricky little bastards she wished she could lock in cages.
"Look, you know i'm not the person to be asking all these fucking questions to, but do you see me drinking all the damn time? I can get through shit without the aid of alcohol, unlike some." Of course she'd been referring to him, but honestly even Bree would pick up a glass or bottle when she was having a pissy day. Alcohol just seemed to make things better, those problems didn't seem so stressful after a few drinks, but she would refuse to admit any of this tonight just because it wouldn't help her point. At least tonight she was facing the music sober, unfortunately. When his finger shot up into her face she immediately grabbed it and pulled it down letting it go when it reached her waist height. "I've had about enough of that damn finger Darius," she spit the words out having harbored those feelings for a while. Most of the time she would just ignore the simple act but today, well today was a completely different story since she'd went and jumped off the deep end. It was as though the aggressions of the past month were all balled up and being released at once. She just hoped she wouldn't pull a Carrie on them all and turn into some demon deadset on ending all of their lives. Not that it'd be the case even if it were to happen, her attention would be far too focused on making Derek miserable.
His next little jab at her had hit home as it was exactly what she usually did to people. The second they started to get close to her she'd push them away and start to ignore them hoping they'd move on from her. It was so much easier just pushing people out of the picture, whether they wanted to be removed or not, but he was always a different story staying past his welcome. It went both ways though and she was just as stubborn as him when it came to being told to leave. It's one of the reasons why she believed they worked so well together, but could also be their greatest downfall. It was frightening to watch how these two acted around one another, never really knowing what to expect, and yet she always thought that'd been a reason why they worked so well together. In some dysfunctional way they had become the others best accents. She watched that slow clap of his and her rage boiled to the surface again as she wanted to lash out and just punch him in the face, but instead she just clenched her hands into fists taking a few deep breaths trying to calm herself down. She really didn't want to cause a scene but knew she was heading towards one.
To anyone on the outside looking in these two might look absolutely absurd taking cheap shots and one another to see who would crack first. It's like they took turns trying to one up each other and put the other down, and whoever was left with any dignity would be victorious. Bree knew in the end she'd lose this battle. Her emotions would get the best of her and she'd snap somehow. It was the one thing that set her and Derek so apart, she never could bottle up her feelings like he could. She was usually good at hiding them but only for so long, so usually she'd sneak off and do whatever she had to alone just so nobody could see. She knew it was childish but she had an image to uphold and if sneaking her emotions out was how that happened then so be it. When his palm rubbed her cheek she stared blankly at him, swearing those chocolate eyes of hers had to have turned black as coal from the hatred being released from every ounce of her body. She knew what he was doing and damnit if it wasn't having a negative effect on her, but at the same time something deep inside of her had actually enjoyed that meaningless carress. She had lost his touch for over a month and had missed it, no matter how fucked up that sounded considering they were at each others throats. She knew she shouldn't care as much as she had but she couldn't help it, he had gotten past her outer most shell of defense and into her heart, no matter how insane that sounded.
Maybe that had something to do with why this was all the more powerful and painful tonight. She was usually the one hurting the male, it'd happened in every previous relationship, but tonight having the tables turned and him being labeled the bad guy was just weird. For once it was her heart that was breaking and she did not like it one bit. This is exactly why she hid her feelings from people and never let herself get caught up and carried away, but damnit the joys and thrills of a new relationship just have positive effects on girls. She may act like one of the boys but deep inside she's just another emotional girl, no matter how much she tries to ignore that. Her eyes fluttered shut as he pressed a kiss, adding insult to injury to her forehead, and as she peaked her eyes open she looked to his feet wishing she'd worn heels so she could crush his toes. He was treating her like all the other whores he'd been around and she was not pleased at all, but what should she expect from someone who feels less than she does? Her eyes widened as she watched him start to chuckle though found no humor in anything that was being said, so silently she urged him forward to enlighten her with what had been so damn hilarious.
With the raise of his eyebrows she was brought back to the day at her house, him and Lucas, the pain that he'd caused both her and him. It had felt like the knife had plunged into her gut as she watched him turn and leave without so much as an explanation. All she had to rely on to figure out what the hell happened had been her cousin, and she could hardly believe he'd tell her the actual truth. He'd warp it to make himself sound even more like a victim, but considering what he went through she could understand why. "That will be the last time you ever hurt my family." she told him straight up as she watched him carefully taking note of all his movement. "You better have gotten it all out of your system because it'll never happen again. You understand?" She made damn sure he could hear that she was stressing this, that he was to never harm her family again. Bree kept her family close to her heart and she'd be damned if she were going to let Derek have his way with them.
When he brought up what her cousin could have done she cocked an eyebrow and stared at him. "What could he have possibly done that would have provoked you that much? Did you see what you did to him?" She asked, though hardly expected an answer from him. She knew if anything he'd be proud of the number he did on her cousin but you could tell she was unimpressed. The more he opened his mouth so much hatred filled her being, how were these two ever a couple! "I'm sure he wasn't half as bad as you're making him out to be. I know my cousin Derek, he may be a smart assed brat but he wouldn't push someone over to edge to beat him." She would not let Derek sway her opinion of her cousin, even if he was being somewhat right. Family above all else, he had to understand that. She rolled her eyes shaking her head in disgust as he explained himself. "You should really work on that." She knew he wouldn't and enjoyed being the person he was, using his fists to solve all his problems, but she could hope that he'd change his tune sometime. She highly doubted it but it was something she aimed for.
Ah, and here came the scene, the one that she was trying to avoid but knew it was bound to happen. Her voice raised as she drew the attention of all those around her, and watching as he innocently dismissed their stares it pissed her off even more. "Are you fucking kidding me?" She groaned wanting to pull her hair out as she stared at him. "I don't want you to be the knight in shining armor," if that is what she'd wanted she could have settled for Preston but she didn't, though bringing his name up now would just add more fuel to the fire so she stopped. "You don't think I knew who you were from the start? I just thought that you'd have the decency to keep your hands to yourself and not hurt those I care about, but I guess not." She shrugged her shoulders for an over dramatic effect as she kept her gaze on him. For some reason she was finding it hard to look anywhere else. "If you still think that i'd try to change you and manipulate you into something you're not than there's an issue, I never wanted anything like that." She shook her head defensively, he really had no idea what was going through her mind. "Right, because i'm sure you answer all sorts of questions when people ask you, can you blame him for not telling you a damn thing when you were just a stranger? You've told people you actually have known less so back the fuck off and lay off of him. You do the exact same thing!" She could not believe what he was saying as she stood here and just wanted to slap him, but she was doing good keeping her anger at bay (with just the release of her voice and nothing more).
When she finally snapped she couldn't help but go on a spree of words telling him everything she thought he needed to know. Her feelings, although it wasn't very clear in what she'd said, he could admit to knowing about finally. When he spoke up she refused to acknowledge him at all and ignored what he had to say until she was finished. She knew if she stopped to listen to him she'd forget where she was heading with this train of thought and it'd fuck everything up. Luckily when the silence fell around them all she could do was wish she were somewhere else, somewhere where none of this mattered and it was just the two of them, happy and together. They could never be alone tonight, the wench coming back with another drink making that clear, but for him to push her away Bree knew she had said something to finally keep his full attention focused on her. Hearing the way he voiced the word care she groaned feeling sick in the pit of her stomach, but he had a point and she forced herself to shrug as she stared at him hurt as a bag of emotions were unleashed.
"It's going to take a lot more than a couple of drinks to forget about me Derek and you know that." She took this time to belittle that chick who'd kept bringing him those stupid drinks, but when she turned back to face him after her admission of the term girlfriend she had not expected his reply. She did not remember breaking up with him, and when he said he wasn't going to wait around for her what did that mean? How long did he even wait? A couple of minutes, an hour or two? When he mentioned saying the words she nodded crossing her arms infront of her chest. "Go on then," she mouthed as she took a deep breath getting herself ready for what was about to happen. When he got in her face she held her own not breaking eye contact as he went on to tell her how they were done, finished, nothing more. She turned her attention to the drink in his hand and brought her focus back to him as she shook her head backing away. Much to his dismay she would not satisfy him with a smack, especially when it's what he'd been expecting as that smirk lay pressed against his lips.
"You go ahead and do that, drink away Derek, but when you wake up in the morning know this," she took a step closer in until their faces were inches apart as she glared at him. "You let the best fucking thing that could happen to you just walk out of your life. You think it's going to be so easy just letting me go? Not when you've let me that far in. I don't care how much I don't fucking know about you, how you're still a book that I haven't been able to pry open, you're not going to be able to forget just like that-" she snapped her fingers in his face tapping her fingers against his cheek instead of slapping him as she backed away from him. "Take a good long look because you'll never see me again. I'm done with this. I'm done with you. Fuck this." She shrugged throwing her hands up in defeat as she turned and walked away from him heading upstairs to the other floor. If she were going to be trapped in here she'd be as far away from him as possible. She was done, literally fucking spent, and she just couldn't handle it. If the pair stayed around each other any longer she'd start to cry and she just couldn't let him see that so she had to get out of there.

A knife had been driven into his heart as she walked away to be rid of him, the thing he had wanted most was the thing that caused him the most pain. But she could be happy now without him in her life since looking back it seemed he only brought her nothing but trouble and grief; now she could get out of the darkness he’d drug her into and get back to brighter times, back to those other people who cared about her and wouldn’t try to hurt her like he had. His eyes trailed after her in concern, knowing no matter how tough she tried to act the girl was probably hurting just as much as he was. That wasn’t his problem anymore though, so he shouldn’t care.
He always would care.
Derek looked on until he couldn’t make out her silhouette anymore amongst the other people and in the dim lighting they were allowed. If she were anyone she would be a distant memory already, the second she’d turned from him he’d have forgotten her face, but she wasn’t just anyone. She was Aubrey Jenkins. And, though he didn’t dare admit it aloud, she was right; she’d managed to weasel past his defenses and found a place in his heart.
Quickly masking the pained expression on his face with one of complete happiness he was rid of her he felt like the biggest liar of all tonight, playing his part of the villain well. But no matter what mask he wore he felt like a broken man.
The alcohol made it easier to push aside the pain he was feeling, but it was still there and the alcohol was also doing a lovely job of making sure he felt it worse than need be when he least expected it. Mostly when he looked around and swore he saw Aubrey standing nearby watching him and judging him as she had been earlier, staring him down with such hatred that he’d rather die than have to go on living knowing he hurt her. But it wasn’t just the ghost of her haunting him oh no; when he’d slipped into the bathroom and caught his own reflection looking at him maliciously, happy with the damage it had caused for the night, Derek punched the glass surface and watched it shatter into pieces. Wishing he’d have punched the monster Bree had seen. That man was still there though and now stared back at him in numbers, bubbling up the rage inside him; all he could do was take it out on the room around him, destroying anything he could get his hands on him. Coming out into a sea of onlookers who had come to see what all the commotion was about Derek looked at them all with disgust as he pushed he way through them all to find that damn barwench and have her get him another drink.
Being trapped inside this building with no way of knowing if/when they’d all get all still had some people rushing around all flustered, even if a significant time had passed for them to calm down; Derek chalked it up to the fact there were no windows in this damn place and they couldn’t get enough oxygen to help them breath. It was like a nut house and he was just waiting for someone to lose it worse than him and kill them all; what a great headline that would be for the Jacksonville Times. Walking through the building Derek decide to check out the rooms, having lost his barwench when she could no longer handle his self-destructive nature; thankfully she stuck around long enough for him to get at least a whole bottle’s worth of scotch in him, or so it felt that way. His eyelids fell heavily and kept closing as if sleep were imminent, but Derek knew better. He’d still be awake until the doors were opened and he was clear of this hell hole, for now his body was just fucking with him. Thankfully they were open long enough to spot a girl all alone in one of the rooms. There was no way of seeing who she was from the angle he was standing at, but something in his gut told him to move along and not to bother her; he was never one to listen to his instincts even when they were right.
”Sitting all alone in the dark beautiful? You look like you could use some company.” Walking closer Derek smirked not really paying attention to her face as she looked up at him, ”Misery does love company you know.” He informed her in a playful tone still not paying attention to who it was he was talking to.
His hazel eyes lazily swept over the room. Not bad for a room with no windows, but he swore this new mayor wasn’t always using all his brain cells. Neither was he at the moment with how many he’d probably killed by drinking away his feelings. Finally deciding to get a better look at this sad girl his heart stop, his feet froze in place, as he looked at none other than the girl he had thought was out of his life for good; if he were in a clear state of mind he’d have realized how likely it was to run into her again, being trapped and all. He only hesitated a moment before carrying on as if nothing had happened, as if his heart weren’t about to jump out of his chest at any moment. ”Don’t shoot I’m unarmed.” Holding up his hands in surrender he slowly moved closer to her until he was able to slide down the wall and sit next to her, while still leaving enough space between them. Though she probably thought it wasn’t nearly enough and would rather he were across the country but she was getting this and going to like it, well she might not like it but you don’t always get what you want. ”Are you hiding out Aubrey?” He couldn’t look at her, he knew she’d see how badly he’d been hurt by what had happened and he didn’t want to possibly see that mirrored on her face. Instead he looked at the dried blood on his hand from punching the mirror, pressing the cuts to remind himself of the pain he deserved to feel. ”Because I can always find you.” A faint smirk curled up the corner of his lips as he wondered if he actually could always find her, he’d sure as hell try if he had a reason to. But he didn’t anymore since they weren’t together, did he?
”The monster scared off someone else tonight.” Derek informed her of what she had missed, not that she cared but he felt the need to tell her just the same. ”Apparently when I’m being all self-destructive and unfixable stupid sluts who I only want for free booze and sex don’t like it.”
What was he doing?
He should leave.
She didn’t want to talk to him. That was why she’d said she was done with him, that meant he didn’t get to come find her and tell her about his problems with other women or not being able to get drunk. His brows knit together in aggravation as he stood up briskly and to take a moment as he teetered about from the sudden light headedness. ”I should just leave you alone. But if you need me, not sure why you would…but if you do I’ll always be there for you.” He still couldn’t bring himself to look at her as his feet began to move away from her, but as his own words rang out in his head he stopped in his tracks and spun around to face her. Livid at the realization he had come to one, one he’d been thinking on for months but had never voiced. ”Why couldn’t you ever be there for me? I had to compete with everyone in your life and you never fought for me like you did anyone else.” Throwing up his hands in exhaustion he wanted the fight to be over but he had to know why she’d never been there for him. But he only expected her to say she had, when it never once felt like she was fighting in his corner with him but always against him. Licking his lips as he looked from her to the ground looking rather defeated, ”It’s enough to make anyone want to not feel anything when it seems the person you care most about holds everyone else above you.” Derek even sounded defeated and his mind was telling him to just leave, and he should just leave but he couldn’t not yet.
”I get it defend the people you care about, you might not believe it but if someone hurt my family or friends I’d kill them.” It was probably the first time he’d ever admitted to actually caring for his family, ever to anyone. It seemed like such a weakness. That if anyone found out they’d used it against him so he acted as if he didn’t care, but he’d rush to kill whatever idiot had harmed the people he cared for. ”Just always wondered where I fell on your list of people…your family…” Derek held up one finger to show they first, it was obvious and he didn’t fault her for holding them the closest. ”…Preston…” Holding up another finger he felt it was correct; the way she’d been willing to run off and leave town just get her friend back showed she cared deeply for him even if she said they were just friends. But actions spoke louder than words. ”…your other friends…” All of his fingers were up on this; he’d never been sure how many she had but she was a friendly person by nature and he’d be lying if he said she didn’t have a lot of people who she called friend. ”…Everyone else…” Now he was just exaggerating, but it was how it felt; that everyone else came before him in her eyes. ”…And last Darius J Whitfield. Worthless monster.”
It was weird to think so negatively of himself, he was always so damn prideful, but given all the booze in his system it was time to let out how it made it him feel apparently. How Aubrey had made him feel. Worthless and as if he had set out to intentionally harm her family, as if it had been his sole mission once the door swung open to try and kill her cousin; not even knowing it had been her cousin that was hollering at him for not being a pizza man and then treating him like the scum of the earth. Telling him what a bad boyfriend he was because he didn’t send flowers and because she didn’t have his picture hanging up around the house; how had he put it? That she was ashamed to be with him. It was all probably true and he’d just wanted to shut the kid up not needing to hear his opinion on the matter, but when she’d come out of the bathroom staring daggers at him it seemed as if she had confirmed it. Then he was left waiting around for her to decide on where they were, like he was going to wait forever for her to make up her goddamn mind about them; Aubrey could’ve taken months before she finally came to find him and tell him it was over. If it hadn’t been for this party he might still be waiting for her to confront him about the issue, but that was what she did. She hid when she didn’t want to deal with things. Another way to push him away, and she got what she wanted she should be happy.
Reminding himself he wanted to be happy he waved his hand about to wave her off, ”Never mind don’t answer. Go be happy with other people who care about you and won’t challenge you, and will give into you by telling you lies to make sure you aren’t sad instead of the truth to make you tougher.” Running his fingers through his hair he mussed it about until it was in such disarray it might look as if he’d just rolled out of bed; normal hair day for the man. Turning his back to her Derek sighed in aggravation, ”Just forget this happened since we’re done.” It still didn’t feel right rolling off his tongue, it felt as if someone were forcing him to say it as he still refused to believe the words himself. Stealing a peak at her over his shoulder he saw she was right behind him and he quickly snapped his head back around, his eyes widening in shock that she’d been so close; how long had she been there?
He was even more shocked as he watched her maneuver her way around him until they were looking each other directly in the eye; he had to remind himself to take a breath as always with her around he was at a loss of breath. Derek couldn’t help himself he reached out and took hold of her face pulling her in closer until his lips crashed against hers. Even if she slapped him he needed one last kiss; one last taste of those sweet lips that had spoken so cruelly to him, that had smiled so sweetly at him time and time again, that looked so inviting when she spoke so provocatively or pushed them out into the cutest pout. He missed those delicious lips and was glad they pressed against his even if it was just for this last time.

Aubrey told herself it was over as she walked away, but even she knew better than that. How could whatever they had be over just by saying the words? Bree forced herself to climb the stairs, mostly vacant because everyone had been downstairs, and when she reached the second floor she marveled at how beautiful it still looked. Even with the red emergency lights the place looked fantastic. The mayor sure had put a pretty penny into making this place beautiful for the guests, but the damn guy couldn't have pitched in for a window or something? Trapped like sardines everyones panic was sure to suck all the fresh air from the room in no time, but upstairs it wasn't such an issue as the guests all seemed to accept their fate for the night.
Bree was not in the mood to socialize as she snuck into one of the rooms lining the back wall, and when she saw it was vacant she slumped over and slid down the wall kicking her feet out infront of her as she smoothed out her dress. Closing her eyes she leaned her head back against the wall as she tried to calm herself after the fight they had just had. It was harder than usual as she could feel herself just wanting to break down and cry, through frustrated tears she could see clearer, but she did not want to show such vulnerability in such a public place. She knew it'd help make her feel better but she couldn't, not with people right outside the door able to see her, so instead all she did was sniffle and wipe away even the faintest start to a tear.
The silence helped her forget about time as she sat there losing herself in her own thoughts. She felt herself getting tired as she even nodded off a few times but with the people walking past talking she always perked awake. All she wished for now was her nice warm bed, a pillow to cuddle, and a good nights sleep. Her pillow would surely be tear-soaked by morning but she didn't care. The longer she held it in she was just getting more angry and that was never a good thing. Damn, she hated Derek so much for being able to toy with her emotions like this. Or at least she told herself she hated him when in reality it was quite the opposite. How could she hate someone who kept her on her toes like he did? She could never hate him even if she knew it's what would be best for the both of them. It's much easier getting over someone you have no more feelings for.
As if fate was playing a cruel game on Aubrey a figure stepped into the room, one she knew all too familiar, and as he spoke she could tell he was drunk. Why would he bother coming to talk to her if they were done? When he started to talk she understood, he had thought she was just another girl that he could have his way with to pass the time. A tear threatened to peak out from under her eyelid as she took witness to how easy it had actually been for him to move on. Here he was, oblivious that it'd been her, and he was trying to pick her up for a good time. She wished she could forget all about him that easily and move on. Having him here now just made her want to tear into him, beat him however badly she could, but she stayed silent as she just stared in disbelief at him. Was this really happening right now or was it just her playing a game on her exhausted self? Misery does love company you know, boy did he have that right on the mark.
Bree could tell he'd figured out who she had been when she watched him stop dead in his tracks, and at this time instead of matching his stare she just looked down at her lap as her fingers nervously played with the fabric of her dress. She huffed when he told her not to shoot, his arms up in defeat being a good addition, and her shoulders just shrugged showing him she had no ammunition. If she had he would have been shot long before he'd figured out it'd been her. At least then she might have been able to hide her disappointment. Nothing sucked worse than telling someone it was over just for them to turn around and see how hurt you were by it all. She could hear him coming closer and she glanced over for only a second as she watched him take residence against the wall beside her. What in the world was he even doing? He did know that they had said they were done earlier right? She really did not need this right now, why wouldn't he just leave already?
"So what if I am," her voice didn't have that edge in it that it'd had before, but that was mostly because she was exhausted in defeat. She shrugged her shoulders again holding back tears as she let her head fall back against the wall and she looked up at the ceiling. "I thought we made it pretty clear a little while ago you don't need to find me anymore. We're done, you're off the hook, no reason to waste your time on something that will never be." Bree told herself she hated him so she could get through this conversation without showing too much emotion. She sat there blank and unreadable, or at least she'd hoped in his drunken state he couldn't see how miserable she had been. Damnit, why couldn't she be more like Kayla into the dramatics and acting? His next admission had Bree staring over at him, again with disbelief, as she wiped a stray tear from her eye. Unbelievable, here he was admitting to trying to sleep with someone else just to have them scare off.
"I don't want to hear about it. I don't want you to tell me about any of it Derek. Just do me a favor and stop," they were well past favors and she knew that, but damn did he really have to talk about a failed conquest? "I really just want-" to be alone, but she couldn't say that as she just returned her attention back to the ceiling wishing he'd somewhat get the hint and leave on his own. He wasn't the most brilliant when he was drunk but he couldn't have been dumb enough to think she wanted him around could he? Seeing him stand up she sighed in relief, he'd gotten the hint, and hearing him say it was even better. If she just kept up this charade he'd be out of the room and she could scream out in aggravation. Trying to stay numb to all feeling she just stared infront of her refusing to give him the satisfaction of looking at him. "Figure out what's wrong with what you just said Derek and you'll be a lot better off." Of course she was talking about how he'd always be there for her, if this break up was going to work he could never be there for her.
She heard him start to step towards the door but all too fast he'd stopped causing her to look in his direction as she watched him spin around. Why in the world was he talking about all of this shit when they were done? His question, although he had a point, came unanswered as she just stayed silent watching him carry on. She knew the answer but did it even matter anymore? "Just shut up Derek, stop." Hearing him pretty much force himself to believe she hadn't cared about him pissed her right off. She did care about him, more than he could imagine, and yet to listen to him was ridiculous. He didn't stop though, didn't listen to her, and instead started to count on his fingers all the people that she'd put before him. Every word springing from his lips having her inch further and further up the wall until she was standing as he came to the final realization, that he had been at the bottom of her list.
She continued on in her silence unsure if he even deserved an answer, and just as quickly he dismissed the question as she took that as a sign that he was going to leave. It's all she'd wanted him to do from when he first walked through the door, and yet as he started back towards the door she found herself following him. She expected him to turn around again, and when he did she'd be there ready to answer his question although he'd honestly told her not to. He seemed so deadset on finding an answer before though that she'd give him the satisfaction of figuring her out. When he turned her mouth was open and ready to let him have it, but just as she was about to speak his lips crashed against hers and she immediately reacted by kissing him back. That only happened for a second as she pushed him away with all of her might when her hands found his chest. "No Derek, no. You can't do this. You can't tell me we're over and do this, damnit i'm not just another fucking skank. You get turned down by her so you're on the hunt for a sure thing? No, i'm not that sure thing anymore, we're over remember?"
Apparantly her body wasn't listening to her as she grabbed ahold of the jacket she'd ruined earlier and pulled him closer until their lips reached one anothers again. Damnit, what in the world was she doing? Did it even matter? Of course not as she reached a hand up to his cheek deepening the kiss while the two were alone in this room together. She stopped though pushing him away again as she stepped back and took some deep breaths trying to calm herself down. "Do you want to know the reason I didn't stand up and fight for you Derek? The real one? Because apparantly we both fight for the ones we care about and yet i've never once stood up for you." Her finger pointed at him as she stepped back closer to him until it poked him in the chest. "I didn't fight for you because I didn't need to. You're strong enough on your own and don't need chicks fighting battles for you. You know who you are and what you have to do to get ahead in life, and you know you don't need people fighting since you've got it under control. You're stronger than that and don't need me, but apparantly you're not smart enough to realize that."
What he didn't know is that she had fought for him, no matter when if her friends said something bad about them she'd be there to correct them time and time again. She fought so much for a relationship that was doomed from the start, but was she upset about that fact or disappointed? Hardly, she believed in them and that's all that mattered. No, she never did fight for him when he was standing right next to her, but he had no idea what she did when he was nowhere to be found. She wasn't going to tell him that though, they were over and he didn't need to know, "so feel free to leave now knowing that I was silly enough to think you were stronger without me weighing you down." She motioned for him to leave having been satisfied with her answer, though her emotions were right on the threshold of going insane if she tried to hide them any longer.

There was no way he could ever completely wash away the feelings he felt this woman. It was why his drunken self paid no mind to the words of warning in his head and coming from Bree, he had to get it out even if he knew it was best to just stay silent and to turn his back on the situation. But that was no easy task and thankfully in his drunken haze he realized that and his body took the course of action he really wanted instead of running it wanted to stay and fight, logic and reason were clearly thrown out the window tonight.
His head was spinning the longer he was allowed to speak, jumbling up his own thoughts and confusing him on whether he really wanted her to answer his initial question. What if she answered and it wasn’t the answer he’d been wanting to hear? On the surface he’d remain resolute, strong, and as if her words had been all he needed to hear to clarify that they were better off parting ways; even if in his heart he refused to believe that. And internally he’d be crushed, a shell of a broken man who would wonder around the rest of his life cold and hard to keep everyone at a distance once again. Every other woman would pale in comparison to Aubrey Jenkins, she was in his eyes the best there was and others would never, even on their best days, match up to this extraordinary woman. Which was the reason he had to tell her to forget his question; but she was as stubborn as he was and always seemed to answer anything asked of her, unlike him who kept things locked away. Only giving away little pieces of himself when he felt she earned the right to know, it had to be something that drove her up the wall. She wouldn’t have to deal with that though as he turned from her to leave, hoping to be out of the room before she could utter a single word in reply.
But once again his feet refused to move; even as he tried to force them forward they were nailed firmly to the ground. This was not the time for his own body parts to be siding with the woman who had such a hold over him, it just proved how weak he was to do anything for her.
Thankfully Derek’s desire for the taste of her lips had managed to silence her before any words could spring from her lips, and really she didn’t need to say anything as her actions were speaking volumes for her. Even if she did push him away Derek felt her kiss him back, he felt the fire that still burned between, and he couldn’t stop the faintest smile from gracing his lips at the confirmation. She wouldn’t see it unless she was looking, and thankfully she was more focused on telling how this couldn’t happen; while he was ready to once again press his lips to hers to get her to stop rambling about how they shouldn’t be doing this when clearly they should. She was clearly on the same page though as she refused to take her own advice and seized his lips in another kiss while pulling him in closer. His hands finding her sides as his body molded against her perfectly, as if they were made for each other. As his lips moved against hers his heart was beating erratically as his whole body seemed to be on fire from one little kiss, a kiss the two could’ve shared at any other time in any other place and it wouldn’t be the same. Their emotions were in over drive and the heat between the two was so stifling Derek he found he was already trying to catch his breath as she finally pushed him away. Licking his lips he gazed at her own hungrily, wanting more, but allowed the woman space to clear her head as it appeared she was trying to do.
Shrugging in defeat he knew there was no way to stop her from speaking her mind, just as he would do the same and had many times before. As she closed the space between them it was all he could do to not reach and grab her and keep her close, as he actually tried to listen to what she was telling him. His head shaking defiantly with each word; she may have been right but it wasn’t what he’d wanted to hear come from her. But life was full of disappointments, and he knew that better than anyone. Hell he was often the one handing out disappointment in over abundance. Meeting her stare Derek’s face moved in closer to hers, looking as if he might kiss her but stopping just before their lips touched. ”You’re right I don’t need chicks fighting my battles for. But I needed my girlfriend to have my back. I needed her to not look at me like everyone else did and wish me dead with a single glance. I needed you Bree and if you don’t realize that, even after I’ve told you this before, then I don’t know what to do.” Shrugging in defeat Derek’s hands rose up to the sides of her face and gently took hold of those adorable chubby cheeks, shaking her face about like one might a stubborn child as if to shake sense into them; gently as if he might break her if he weren’t careful. ”Strong or not I thought you’d have my back, because like me you’re a fighter too. We’re stronger together and you…” Chuckling sheepishly his eyes feel away from hers in embarrassment for a brief second before meeting them once again with more confidence, his forehead finding hers for support as it felt too much to hold it up and he just wanted to give in. ”…You gave me strength. Even if you don’t believe it. He told her truthfully on the sliver of a sad smile.
Regretfully he let her face move from between his hands and allowed her to create space between them again, she was the stronger of the two apparently and he needed that from her as she was telling him he could leave. Looking into her eyes he thought he saw her begging for him not to, but his blood was mixed with alcohol so his mind might be playing tricks on him. But even if it were just an illusion of the mind he refused to dismiss it and reached for her hand to pull her in against him, looking down at her as her body was pressed against his once more he couldn’t help but smirk.
”You don’t weigh me down Bree, I can easily push your skinny ass off if you tried to pin me down.” He said trying to make light of her comment, his playful side coming out, ”Though I might like it if you did.” Waggling his eyebrows suggestively Derek knew he might be walking on thin ice as she very well might not appreciate how he couldn’t take this seriously, but he couldn’t help himself. He didn’t want to leave and he wanted to prove her wrong. ”And we’re not over, just because we say so. You and I are far from over.” Becoming serious all the sudden he pressed his lips to hers once again, his free hand not clinging to her own snaking around her waist to hold her close so she couldn’t get away this time; his fingers fitting into the spaces between hers perfectly.
They were quite the pair; dysfunctional and yet it worked for them somehow.
Derek’s lips abandoned hers before she got the chance, but they still remained close enough to feel their brief touch as he spoke to her. ”Run away with me.” He spoke the words in a hushed voice as if he didn't dare same them, but the eagerness in his tone hinted he wasn't sorry he had; She’d probably think he was crazy, and hell he thought he was at the moment. But it somehow made sense. If the two got away from the town they could work out what had happened and get over it by it just being the two of them, no outside forces influencing the way they were. They were best together, Derek still believed that.

She should have never pulled him in for that second kiss. She should have listened to herself when she said it wouldn't happen. She knew there could be nothing more between these two. Her head was thinking so clearly for once but it didn't seem to matter. Her body was speaking for itself proving to him that she wasn't over him. That second kiss, deeper than the first, proved there was still that spark between them. Hell, the first kiss had been the spark and now this second one was more a fire burning within. No matter how many times they'd tell each other it was over their bodies would still rebel to be together.
Stopping she found if she didn't say something fast their lips would be right back together, so instead of letting that happen she answered his burning question. When she'd finished she thought he'd just ignore what was said and kiss her again. His lips were getting awfully close to hers as she knew if he pressed them together she'd be unable to resist and push him away again. The last few times she'd shoved him away she used up a lot of her energy and she just didn't have it in her anymore to do it again. After everything that had happened tonight Bree was officially spent.
When he spoke up she was relieved that his lips weren't this close just to meet hers. It's funny though, the closer they were together the better she understood him. If he was saying this from across the room it'd hardly have the same effect on her, but because they were so close together she could really listen to every word as he spoke them. She still found it doubtful that he would need her to have his back, and when he told her he needed her to see him for more than what everyone else had she sighed. The one time she knew she'd looked at him so horribly was with what had happened with her cousin.
"Derek, you hurt someone in my family, did you really think i'd just open the door and have your back? Family comes first, i'm sure you'd understand." He had made the admission that family meant everything to him too so he had to understand. "Relationships come and go, friends grow apart, but family is forever." Bree hardly believed in finding your soulmate in high school so she never put her boyfriends above her relatives. "The fact that you'd think i'd cheat on you with someone like Lucas shows your own insecurities. If you want to talk about me having you back you should have thought about trusting me. I don't cheat."
She had been cheated on in the past and it hurt like hell. "I never thought, in a relationship or not, you'd truly need another person Derek. You're too stubborn to need help." She shook her head truly believing he was better on his own. She always thought that'd never change just because their were labels of boyfriend and girlfriend now. He'd said it himself so many times before, he was better on his own, so why'd that change just because he became taken? "I would have been there for you if it was anything other than my family." She knew to truly make a relationship work she'd have to rank her boyfriend just as high as her family, but obviously there was nothing she could do about it now. They were over, done, finished.
Bree would usually be amused by his gesture of trying to shake some damn sense into her, but she just couldn't laugh tonight after everything that had happened. Plus the fact she couldn't ignore that he'd been drunk right now so would he even remember any of this in the morning? We're stronger together, Bree sighed hearing that she'd also given him strength, "right, strength to hurt me." She shook her head not letting herself fall victim to his words. They were so inviting and she wanted to believe them, but if she'd been the one that'd given him the strength to do that to her cousin she wanted no part of it. She didn't want to think that she'd been the reason he was hurt, even if she knew she had been, but that rational side of her just wasn't wanting to hear anymore.
Luckily he let her back away easily enough without fighting too much to keep her close to him, and you could tell just by looking at her there'd been no fight left in her at all. She'd came to the ball with such a vibrant attitude and was nearing the end of her ropes. She watched as he contemplated leaving but soon she felt herself getting pulled into him, the little struggle she gave seeming meaningless as she molded right against him exhausted. She could hear him teasing her but she was hardly up for laughing and joking around. Not after everything they'd been through tonight. She just wasn't having any of it. "I'm not in the mood, Whitfield." Whoa, they must have been turning a corner in this conversation because instead of calling him Derek she'd went back to using Whitfield. That must have meant something.
Hearing him say they weren't over confused her as she looked up at him, though her eyes couldn't linger there as she felt the urge to cry out in frustration at how fucking insane all of this had been. She was so confused, first he said they'd been over for almost a month and now he was saying they weren't? He needed to make up his damn mind and be done with it. "I'm not going to do this Derek. I'm not going to keep going back and forth. Either we're over or we're not, you need to-" she was going to tell him he needed to make a decision and stick to it, but surely his lips pressing against hers had done just that. She wanted to fight and push him away for a third time but she felt his arms sliver around her back keeping her close to him. There was no pushing herself away from this one.
Her hands, unsure of what they should be doing, rested on his arms grasping hold of his jacket as she pushed his shoulders away from her just a little though she could see he wasn't budging. Her lips obviously hadn't cared since they seemed to press nicely against his. The kiss, although she wished it hadn't ended, was abrupt as Derek spoke causing her to stare up at him in disbelief. "You do realize we're trapped in here right?" She asked looking around surprised that nobody had came in the room exploring the building. Either that or she'd been so caught up with Derek she'd never heard them come in and/or leave. "We can't just run away anyway, it'd just not work, would it?" Bree went from finding the idea completely absurd to actually thinking about it.
all I need is just a little emotion

How he’d senselessly beaten up her cousin and how she would stand by her family through it all no matter if it was right or wrong; it was a quality he found he liked in her, her loyalty to family, but right now he was disliking it for making it hard for her to see past what was before her eyes. Thinking on Derek came to the conclusion she might have a reason to not see anything more than what had been staring her in the face; he couldn’t find any reason as to why he’d attacked the man. He’d never needed a reason before though, so it was strange to have to find one to merely answer her question of why he’d done what he had.
Exhaling a frustrated sigh Derek scratched the back of his head as he tried to recall details of the night in question, ”Aubrey I know…I know…” The words rushed out of him rather aggressively as he was all flustered trying to make sense of his own thoughts, but only one truth was coming up. ”I wasn’t thinking. It may just sound like excuses but I hadn’t had the best day and when I’d come over to see my girlfriend, who’d most likely make things better like only she can, I hadn’t expected to be met with a smart mouthed punk who’d raise my blood pressure even higher.” Rubbing his hand over his face like it was sand paper he hopped to rub away some of the cloudiness and make things clearer not only for himself but her as well, but he was hardly the best man for the task of explaining himself. Hell he never did so he felt like he was just winging it. For whatever reason it was impossible to meet those beautiful sad doe eyes staring at him as he went on, he couldn’t handle the judgment that might be staring at him not from her. ”I just lost it and maybe in the back of my head I saw it as out for you, a way to be rid of me. For you to see how bad I am, because the more I search I can’t find a reason…and blaming you for my actions just doesn’t feel right because you may drive me crazy…” Pulling at the ends of his hair he felt like ripping it all out as he recalled the way the woman drove him insane, ”…And I may be rather reckless when I want to protect the people I care about but it was all me being self-destructive. So maybe I was right you might be better without me.” Releasing his dark chocolate locks of hair he threw his arms up in defeat.
”But I selfishly don’t want you to be.”
Throwing his arms up in the air once again, this time in exasperation, he looked at her wide eyed disbelief. ”I didn’t think you were…maybe for a second from the way he said you were in the shower but it was just me trying to find more reasons to make you want to be rid of me. And it’s not like you’re a saint here I’m sure time and time again you’ve thought I’d cheat on you, so don’t go acting all innocent.” Pointing at her knowingly he quickly withdrew his finger before she could grab hold of it again, the last thing he needed was her to possibly break it. He was rather attached to it and enjoyed shoving it in people’s faces.
Listening to her he was left stunned, she had a point but he’d have thought she’d have seen better than anyone why he said he didn’t need anyone. People disappointed you and they never stuck around or hurt you, but Bree had stuck around and though she’d hurt him it was usually his own fault for causing her to act so ruthlessly towards him in the first place. ”Well I need you and I don’t care if you believe it or think I’m just being stupid. Fuck if you wanted me to not need you, you shouldn’t have been so god damn stubborn yourself and stuck around. He hadn’t a clue how they’d gone back him being pissed at her but leave it to Aubrey to bring up different emotions in him in less than sixty seconds. Swallowing discreetly he looked away from her as she spoke up once again, and he couldn’t deny she had a reason. He just wasn’t happy that she was right, ”I didn’t even fucking know who he was! For fucks sake you act like I knew who he was and I didn’t have a fucking clue…although it’s not like he knew me either because as he so kindly pointed out you were probably ashamed to mention to me your family. Didn’t have any pictures of your terrible boyfriend who didn’t bring you flowers and who’s such a monster.” He was back to being that wound up made man who was going to let her have it, if they were being truthful he could tell her what her oh so sweet and innocent cousin had said; what harm could it do? She wouldn’t care what he told her would she? ”Thank your cousin for opening my eyes to what a bad boyfriend I am and how I was right to think I don’t deserve someone like you. I should find some way to show him I appreciate how he opened my eyes.” Derek was blowing things out of proportion but the way she kept throwing it in his face that it was her family was ridiculous, he hadn’t known it was her family and if he had he might have still been less than unpleasant with him but he wouldn’t have laid a hand on him. She was however in some delusion he’d made his mission to show up and hurt her family, as if his Jenkins’ sense had been tingling and he had to come over just to beat one up.
It was completely ridiculous.
”I probably wouldn’t have cared what he’d thought but he seemed to know just how his cousin felt about me.” Derek shrugged but was clearly livid once again, his eyes darted about to find something to take his anger out on again. At the rate he was going he may have to pay the city more than he’d ever want to for the damages he was causing.
”If you can’t look past this and think I was hell bent on waiting for this one moment to hurt you I guess you’re right to keep pushing me away. But look at that Bree I’m not going anywhere.” Searching her eyes he could only see this sad hurt version of herself looking back at him, but he didn’t stop trying to find even a glimmer of hope that she wanted him to stay. It was there in her kiss but he couldn’t stay and look at her so hurt because of him. And yet he couldn’t leave with her feeling that way about him either.
And the second he’d seen what he’d been waiting for Derek grabbed hold of her.
It changing his whole demeanor as he watched her struggle to get away from him until she realized her effort was in vain and she let her body fall against his. Derek’s lips inched upwards into a victorious smirk as he watched her; swearing she took comfort and great displeasure in being this close to him. Hearing her call him by his last name had his eyes dancing with his excitement, even if she said and looked like she wasn’t up for playing he took that a sign she was ready for anything he could throw at her. Aubrey Jenkins, his girl, had a fire burning in her; be it good or bad he planned to make it grow. ”Oh well then I should put you in the mood shouldn’t I Jenkins?” His face lit up with a devilish nature as he tore his eyes from her to look at the red emergency lights around them, ”You’d think being trapped with me and with this mood lighting all around it’d be enough but even on the elevator you played hard to get…”
He began to walk her backwards until her body was pressed between his and the wall, ”…And then when I closed the space between you had to remember to breath and think because I get you all flustered…” Looking back at her his hands found her chipmunk cheeks and caressed them as he leaned his face in closer to her,”…and as you caught your breath your heart was beating so erratically you swore the deafening sound could be heard throughout the whole elevator. You worried I’d hear it and realize it was coming from you and I’d make fun of you for feeling that way about me…but I never thought of you like every other girl Jenkins.” Looking into her eyes sincerely as he spoke he stole a glance at her full lips, ”And oh god you always were more intoxicating. That faint scent of vanilla always gave me a high, your chocolate eyes were always so full of life, those delicious lips of yours well I swore they were always asking to be kissed by me, and this skin of yours…” One of his hands dropped from her face so his finger could brush over her exposed arm, working it’s way up to her shoulder and finally finding her neck; he watched his hands movements excited by them. ”…So perfect and soft as silk. I’d never wanted you more than I did then but I was wrong I want just as badly now.” Licking his lips he leaned in as if he were about to kiss her but at the last second his kept moving until his lips were able to find the soft skin of her neck, pressing delicate kisses against it; knowing just the spot he needed to focus on to drive her wild.
Derek grinned against the sensitive area of her neck as his hands slid their way down her body and found her knees to knock her off her feet and hold her up, sliding his hands up her thighs Derek held her up against the wall as he kept kissing her neck. Seeing if he couldn’t get her in the mood.
Silencing her with his lips had been a brilliant call on his part, words were never their strong suit. Even if he her body was in agreement with her words as he felt the slight shove it was her lips that were keeping him from leaving.
Hearing her question what he’d said Derek’s head swiveled around to get a better look of the place, as if he hadn’t seen what she’d just pointed out to him before. Turning to face her again his mouth fell open in false shock, his mock surprise might be taken as him making fun of but he kind of was. ”Really I had no idea.” Sticking his tongue out at her playfully his face moved in closer to hers once again until his lips were pressed against hers once again, he’d missed their taste for over month and now it seemed he couldn’t get enough. ”Minor details Bree Bree…minor details.” He assured her with his lips still pressed firmly against hers, but he’d pulled back when he’d felt her lips start to move against his as if she’d had something to say. His eyebrow shot up in response to what she was asking first, there was no way she was seriously asking that was she. But it only took him a second to realize the doubt he’d thought she been voicing didn’t match up with her tone of voice; considering this he came to the conclusion her words were laced with a bit of excitement. Was she really willing go through with it if he assured her they could? ”Oh darling we can. Hell it might even be good for us to just be alone somewhere miles from here. Resting his forehead against hers Derek’s lips stretched out into an actual smile as he looked at the woman he’d do anything for. ”It’d work you just have to trust me.” That was question could they trust each other? There was a big part of him hoping they could just get over what had happened and see it as a stupid mistake on his part, because he trusted her before it happened. Hell he still did but it was a bit of a leap of faith on her part. She just had to know if she jumped he’d be there to catch her, always. ”Once we get out of here we can pack a bag and just go. You and me…and maybe my cat if you chose to stop hogging him all to yourself.” Even in a serious situation he couldn’t help but tease.

Aubrey just couldn't help but keep thinking about her cousin and the last time she saw Darius. That scene had haunted her and although she wished she could move forward even now she could see the glistening of the knife when she closed her eyes. Even without the knife her cousin would have never stood a chance so why did Derek feel inclined to draw it out? There were so many questions that Bree just did not have answers for, and it didn't help that she wasn't downstairs to see how it'd all began. Hearing about his attitude and what he'd been doing had her drawing in a deep breath remembering that she'd been the one to text him that day to come over. Sure, it'd been before Lucas showed up and when she went to take a shower she thought nothing of it, but she could see where Lucas's mouth could get him into some trouble. It had happened so many times in the past so why would that day be any different?
Her silence apparantly was getting to him as he continued on, something she'd almost wished he hadn't as she stared up at him in disbelief. Something was wrong though because he wouldn't meet her eyes. He was looking anywhere else than at her where she wished he would so she could believe him. Finally her silence had been enough and she groaned shaking her head side to side. "Shouldn't I be the one to make the final decision to get rid of you? I'm pretty sure if I didn't want to be with you Derek I could have came to that conclusion by myself and not needed an excuse. I'm an adult afterall, I should be allowed to act like one." This whole 'thought i'd give you an excuse to be rid of me' thing was ridiculous in her opinion. "Or maybe you were looking for an excuse to get out of it yourself? You say you were doing it all for me but what it deep inside you were the one looking for that excuse? A reason to be done with me because i'm not what you'd expected or wanted-" it made sense the more she thought about it.
Again, him telling her she might be better off without him she just laughed shaking her head. "I'm getting sick and tired of hearing that Derek." She made that clear having been told so many times before by him that she was much better off if he'd been out of the picture. "Is this all you're ever going to do? Be some damn broken record telling me i'm better off everytime that we're together? Because if that's the case maybe you're right, maybe I am better off because if i've never been with someone so unsure of themselves and our relationship." She shrugged, about ready to withdraw herself from this conversation and truly be over with him, but just then is when he made the admission that he's selfishly wanting her to stay. She stared at him bewildered wanting to just strangle him for being so damn complicated, but she had to expect it because of who she was dealing with. It'd never been easy when Darius Whitfield had been involved.
For someone who thought the fight had all been gone in her she must have found her second wind as she could feel this surge of energy the more she spoke up to him. A lot has changed in four years but it was all for the better, and if he didn't see that she'd just have to beat it into him. Not literally because she wasn't going to start throwing punches or anything, but she knew that with Derek her words could hurt and make their point at the same time. He was one of the only men that truly listened to her and she was thankful for that. She kept shaking her head finding all of this hard to believe when he kept talking, and when he was finished she shrugged. "You're so unpredictable i'd never know if you'd cheat on me or not. You're the one that's not used to the dating game. I mean when exactly was your last relationship?" Not that she was one to talk, the last time she'd been in one was over a year ago now. "And i'm pretty sure in the two months, give or take, that we were dating I wasn't sitting around worried that you were cheating on me. I'm pretty sure I was giving you more than enough to keep your interest locked at home and not go wandering." Of course she'd found the beginning of their relationship to be rather sexual in nature but could you blame them?
"Plus, i'm pretty sure i'd have better taste than some scrawny lacrosse player," she loved her cousin and all but he wasn't the most built of people. Definitely would not be her type if they weren't related. That second wind was making her quite the windbag when it was her turn to talk, but seeing that Derek was truly listening to what she was saying made her feel all the better after her rant. Hearing that he needed her caused her to become silent once more. Damnit, why did he have to say things like this to her? "I would have been there for you if you needed me. You should have just told me instead of always saying that you want me. Want and need are two different things," she'd like to think in the back of her mind that he'd needed just as much as want before, and now as he finally admitted it everything became clear for her. "I stuck around because I saw something in you I liked." She shrugged making it sound like it'd been no big deal. "If you needed me so bad you shouldn't have been so damn stubborn and kept pushing me away. You could have had me sooner than you thought." Though not that much sooner since during her senior year she was fighting all these feelings for Preston and was confused on that front.
She had heard this part of his arguement before, that he'd had no clue who the person had been, "well then maybe you should have found out before jumping to conclusions." Granted if she knew her cousin at all he wouldn't have given the man any answers that he wanted before he knew in turn who he was. "I mean, nevermind," she shook her head knowing that he'd tell her that he hadn't known and Lucas hadn't given him an answer when he asked. "You shouldn't take the things he says seriously," she shook her head knowing that her cousin was, above all else, never serious. She wished she could have been around when the two had met each other, things would have been a lot different, but of course fate had to play that twisted game on her and fuck with everything. "You know me better than that Derek so I don't know why you'd let anything he says get the best of you. You know I don't like that flower crap and pictures," well she had no other reason than they hadn't taken any as to why they're not hanging up. "If it makes you mad that there's none of you on the walls i'll take one and put it up there, problem solved, i'd never be ashamed." Though she had been rather ashamed that he'd go as far as he did that day, but it was out of her control.
"Derek, stop it, just stop. You're trying to make yourself sound like the victim and it's just not going to work so stop." She couldn't take much more of this, and the thought that he'd seek her cousin out again made her kind of nervous. With his mixed bag of emotions she'd never be certain what to expect, so she would just have to keep them as far apart as possible. Luckily Luke was still in school so that kept him grounded to the campus most of the time, but she'd always feel nervous if the two ran into each other on the streets. She'd hoped that now that he knew who he was he wouldn't touch him, but with Derek you could never be too certain. "You can show him how thankful you are by leaving him alone, please." Bree just didn't know how else to say it than to be direct. She needed Derek and Lucas to never cross paths again, and if by chance they did she needed them to avoid confrontation. "How about you and Lucas just play nice?" She knew it was far too much to be asking for but she tried, and even if by some miracle Derek agreed she still was unsure of how her cousin would behave. He'd been dumb enough to get him into trouble before so she was afraid he could do it again.
She just wanted this topic to be dropped, even if she's the one that kept picking it up, but when he spoke up she shook her head trying to get him to understand. "You should be able to draw your own conclusions about how I feel about you. When has it ever mattered before what others have said?" Maybe it had something to do with the fact that he was another male that had been in her house, but still Bree could not believe that Derek would actually listen to what anyone else had to say. He was usually too stubborn to believe anything other than what he figured out all by himself, so what had made Lucas get through to him? When he had finished by telling her he wasn't going anywhere she became silent once more staring at him trying to see if there was more to it than that. She hadn't expected him to be done with just that, not the Darius Whitfield that she had known, but still as she stared nothing more came out. Her lips curved into a hidden smile as she tried her best to keep it from his sight, but the longer he stood there strong and determined to not walk away she had to admit it sounded nice to hear him say that.
She should have told him that he should just leave and find his happiness elsewhere, but the longer they stayed in silence she too knew that she couldn't do that. She wanted him to stand there and fight for her, something inside of her screamed for him to keep her close, and as if he had read her mind she felt him grab ahold of her so she couldn't get away. There was a small struggle as she tried to gain the upperground, but she just couldn't as she let herself be molded against him. Her words, she was surprised she could form them at all, but she did and she felt damn proud of that fact. Hearing his question, though it sounded more like a challenge, had her curiously looking up at him wondering what exactly he would do to put her in the mood. As he brought the elevator up her eyes widened as she remembered that event and couldn't help but laugh a little looking elsewhere so he couldn't see the excitement that memory brought up in her. "The elevator was a little more private." Not that it mattered, everyone knew they were an item now even if they'd been on a break. Since Thanksgiving it'd been clear to the city that Derek and Bree were together.
Her feet moved backwards as she wondered what he'd been up to, and when her back hit the wall she chuckled as she kept her eyes focused on him as he spoke. "That seemed like forever ago. I'm surprised you even remember," he still had that effect on her though she could hide it better now, or at least she thought. She was surprised and impressed that he'd paid such close attention to how her body reacted to him in the elevator, and she was if his attention was just as focused now he'd see the same things were happening. The closer to her he got her heart seemed to pick up it's pace of beats, not that she minded, but if he kept teasing her enough she was sure she'd have a damn heart attack. She was so thankful that he was drunk so hopefully he couldn't tell what he was doing to her if she hid it well enough. Something told her he was starting to sober up with how well kept his thoughts were, but she still hoped there was enough alcohol in the equation that he could forget about these flutters.
The more he spoke she kept silent loving to hear each and every word that he was saying. Everything sounded so perfect coming from his lips, like something out of some fractured fairytale, but she couldn't tell him any of this because she was afraid he'd stop. She did not want him to, she enjoyed hearing everything that he had to say, so the longer she stayed silent the more she found he kept on his roll of words. With every compliment he gave her about her scent, lips, eyes, skin, everything was just intoxicating her as he was definitely doing the trick of working her up. She could tell when his eyes would meet her that he was doing this sincerely and not just to get a rise, but still it's what he had set out to accomplish and it was surely working. She just wondered how long she could keep him talking, or herself silent for that matter. He had to have wanted to hear something in response to all of this right? She was so confused and at a loss for words as she felt his hand slipping up her arm and to her neck. Still curious to think of what he'd do next she watched him carefully, that excitement in his eyes being enough for her to know whatever it was she would like.
Hearing that he'd wanted her just as bad now had a grin trying to pry itself across her lips, but she had forced it into hiding as she caught her breath before his lips touched hers, but he had pulled a fast one on her and taken himself away from her lips and to her neck. Bree's fingertips found his shoulders as she steadied her touch when his lips brushed against her sensitive skin. She hadn't been expecting him to knock her off her feet, so when he did she reached her hands around his shoulders and held on tight as her dress weighed her down a little from all the extra fabric. This was not something she had expected tonight but she wasn't fighting, that must be some sort of sign. She wanted to tell him that now was not the right place for anything serious to happen, but with each kiss from him all of her thoughts seemed to distance themselves from her lips. She'd open her mouth but nothing would come out, no matter how many times she tried it just wasn't happening. How did he have such a way of silencing her?
Finally, something had managed to break the silence, her question that she knew he'd heard as she watched him pick his head up and crane it around to see the entire room. She laughed shaking her head when he stuck his tongue out at her, that playful gesture so cute, but it seemed not to phase him as he leant in for another kiss. Her lips seemed to forget that they were in a public place as she urged the kiss further pressing herself into him and pulling his shoulders into her more against the wall. His question to run away with him had caught her off-guard and she'd dismissed it at first, but soon she started to think that it might not be such a bad idea. At least it wouldn't be a bad idea if the two could get along long enough for this little road trip. She thought it was possible as long as they didn't bring up other people. It seemed they got along until someone else was added to the equation, so as long as they kept it only about themselves they were good to go. "Where would we even go? Shouldn't we think something like this through a little more?"
She let her eyes fall to his lips as he used the word trust. That was something she had found hard to do after her previous relationships, and with her and Derek fighting and arguing all the time was this really a good idea? Bree fought the urge to pull him in for another kiss to end the conversation and maybe he'd forget about the idea, but he sounded so sincere she couldn't shake the question. "It's one thing to tell someone you trust them," she started, though obviously her trust was shaky and she wasn't sure what she should even do. Could she trust someone so unstable with their emotions? Not that she'd been any better since her feelings would catapult from one thing to another daily, so really all she could do to answer his question was pose another one. "Words are just that though, words, so how about we just take it one step at a time and see if the trust is there? We can just go slow-" she was talking about the relationship in general, something he was sure to pick up on, but focusing on that question helped her say it. "I am not sure who to trust..."
She wanted to trust him and believe that everything he told her was the truth, and that he'd always be there to help her up when she fell, but she just couldn't make that leap of faith. "If you're talking about Freddy he hasn't been your cat since you handed him over at Christmas. You haven't even seen him in a month. What kind of father are you?" She shook her head though it was no big deal that he hadn't came to see the feline. She had fun playing with him with all that extra energy he had. "He'd be terrible on the road, he'd be all over the place, I swear that cat's hyper-active." Not that it was a problem but it did leave Bree with quite some messes to clean up around her house. "How about we just focus on the here and now and forget about running away when we get out of here?" The more she'd think about it the more she could see it as a good idea, and it made her nervous to think about just heading out with Derek somewhere other than Jacksonville.
"Can we just go back to kissing? I missed your lips." She grinned pulling him back in for another kiss before he could say anything, but she did manage to catch him off guard and she caught her footing and moved between him and the wall trying to get away, but from the place where he had her she just couldn't wiggle out from between him and the wall. "This really shouldn't be happening when someone can walk in any minute." She mentioned glancing over his shoulder at the door and then back at his lips. "I've missed you Derek," she spoke quietly hoping that maybe he hadn't heard her correctly and would move on quickly. She hadn't missed the man he'd became and she'd seen for that fraction of a second at her house, but she had missed the man that kept her close and comforted her. Whether he knew it or not just being close to him made her feel better when she was having a lousy day, and even though they were fighting knowing that she wasn't alone during this made it so much easier to handle. She just hoped if they were going to give each other a second chance things could go back to how they were before the incident with Lucas. She wasn't sure how things would be if she forced Derek out of her life for good...she wasn't even sure if that would ever even possible for her to quit him.
all I need is just a little emotion

Did she understand him for once? Had she finally realized he was right and wasn’t going to challenge him on it? His hazel eyes searched the ground in confusion, hoping to find the answers he was seeking, but knowing that it was entirely to easy. She would never hold her tongue; not when he’d talked as if he knew her and what she wanted. But he did know her, and even if she was to stubborn and dead set on proving him wrong she had to know that he did. She had to know he was right, even if she wasn’t willing to voice the doubts. They had to be there; hell she wouldn’t make such a big fuss about his actions if she wasn’t worried about the man he was. The monster that he is.
It was wishful thinking though; her voice, though deflated and strained from everything, came out strong and determined. As if she had something to prove to not only him but to herself. Derek could only roll his eyes as he listened to the words she said, she had nothing to prove to him and the fact she was twisting his words around to make it seem like he’d done something for himself was not helping her case. If that’d been what he’d meant to do than he’d have done it and wouldn’t be standing here still trying to resolve this pointless fight. Hadn’t he’d covered why he’d done it? So why did she still need answers? Dragging his hand down his face he let out an unamused chuckle as his hazel eyes finally rose to meet hers once again. ”No, no Aubrey you can’t make this decision for yourself. Because I see how you fucking handle it. Twice now.” Holding up two fingers in front of her face it seemed like it would help prove his point, but she probably wouldn’t recall last year when she’d done the same thing to him then that she had done now. ”You act like a fucking child so I’ll treat you like one. A problem gets thrown at you, you run and hide like a child. Not wanting to face it, so yes I’d say me making the choice for you is the best decision!” As a wave of anger washed over him Derek raised his voice, his brows knit together as he stared her down. ”Don’t you fucking try to twist my goddamn words around either! If I’d wanted out I’d leave and I did when you stayed hidden, I was willing to just give up because I knew you were so disgusted by that side of me you wouldn’t want me around.”
Taking a step closer to her he grabbed hold of her face, gently cradling it between his hands even though he was being rough with everything else. Swallowing discreetly he tried to steady himself as he looked her dead in the eye. ”You were exactly what I wanted. And I knew going into it what to expect…or don’t you remember my perfect woman?”
He was sure didn’t, why would she remember a conversation they’d had over a year ago? That at the time had seemed so pointless and nothing would come of it. His eyes soften the longer he looked upon her, no matter how mad he wanted to be with her she had a way of smoothing out his edges and softening his resolve. ” Brunettes with brown eyes, I like them with a bit of fire in them. So when I’m being myself they can take it and dish it back. She has to be confident because if she doesn’t like who she is, and no other guy wants her why would I? I don’t care what she does, but I like a girl who can keep me on my toes. Strong willed individual…of course I care about her looking hot because I am shallow like that.” Reciting what he’d told her before, once upon a time, he couldn’t help but chuckle softly as he tore his gaze away from her briefly before looking upon her once again in amusement. ”The one who’d piss me off the most. If my memory is good as I know it is.” But his happiness was short lived as he backed away from her and folded his arms over his chest; recalling what her type had been at the time and how he hadn’t been it.
Even if it was a different time in her life Derek couldn’t help but recall he wasn’t the guy she’d wanted.
”Then get it through your fucking head so I don’t have to keep repeating myself.” He hated himself for having just said that but if she was going to be this way it seemed the only way to get through too her was be mean and ruthless. But if the girl wanted to be treated like an adult he couldn’t baby her, no he wouldn’t baby her. That wasn’t how you dealt with people; that was how you catered to them and gave them what they wanted not what they needed.
And he felt he fell under the things she wanted in her life, not the things she needed. Running his fingers through his hair he felt the loose strands of hair slip through his fingers until he took hold of the ends and once again was pulling at them; the woman just may be the reason he went bald if he wasn’t careful. ”You are better off! God it’s like you only see this one version of me and try not to see the other part of me, and when it’s staring you in the face then you get it. Then you want nothing to do with me, but shit I’m always thinking about how this other side of me…this monster as you called it. Can come out at any moment. How I know me and I wait for the day I do something stupid and lose you. Because-“ Cutting himself off he looked at her in frustration and uncertainty; frustrated for having to explain himself and uncertain how if he even should be. Licking his lips he considered this a moment before continuing on. ”Because I know it’s a matter of time before I do. I don’t deserve nice things everything I touch I destroy.” Looking from her to his hands, the very tools of destruction he used to hurt people the most next to his words, he could only sigh in disappointment. She probably wouldn’t even understand, she’d probably try to convince him that he was wrong. But he knew he wasn’t.
Derek’s eyelids fluttered open and closed as he realized somehow she was turning everything he was saying around and hadn’t listened to him; he’d listen to her but she couldn’t listen to him? Instead she tried to twist his words and manipulate them to seem as if she were perfect; if he was staying around like he had told her was then he’d have to show her she wasn’t perfect. ”Oh yes Jenkins lets point out my flaws. Point out how I’ve never been in a relationship, how I don’t know how to be with someone because all I do is sleep around. Bravo you’ve caught up I’ve only being doing this for years, hell I told you I don’t date countless times so what’s the point in throwing it in my face?!” He hissed out the words through clenched teeth, the crease in between his brows deepening with every word he said.
She was not going to make him feel terrible for being the person he had been, he was never going to apologize. ”Oh come off your high fucking horse, you don’t trust me even if I’ve been nothing but honest with you. I could tell how jealous and pissed you were when I flirted with that girl in front of you, how you wondered if you were enough. You’re a woman with insecurities and it’s crossed your mind, you’ve wondered. So stop pretending you haven’t…and keeping my interest?” Derek’s brow arched up in challenge, as the corners of his lips curled up in an amused smirk. ”Darling the sex was great but I’d hardly saw you keep my interest when you barely come around. When I have to try and bribe you to come over and barely see each other. Don’t get me wrong.” Shrugging nonchalantly he ran his hand over his hair, standing just a little bit taller as he felt a new self-entitled air about him. ”Spending time with you is great, and I don’t need all your fucking attention but I don’t really even feel like I’m a part of your life. I feel like your latest conquest, the latest bad boy you wanted to change and keep around just to show you people you have.” Taking a step back from he held out his arms for her to come at him with whatever she had hidden up sleeve next, if she was going to insist on making him angry and saying these things she thought was right he’d always be there to tell her the honest truth. It was one of his better qualities if he did say so himself.
Her next omission had his head drooping down from the weight of it, even if she thought her words were harmless they carried more weight with them then she realized at times. Pushing back the brushed against his forehead he let out an unamused chuckle as the strands slipped from his fingers and some began to fall back into place. Unable to stop himself he directed his index finger at her, waggling it about slightly. ”Oh no, not a scrawny lacrosse player. Not the mechanic who smokes, no. You, Jenkins, you’d want that big muscular jock.” Looking himself over Derek couldn’t help but smirk; he wasn’t in the worst shape if he could go around fighting people but he wasn’t as stacked as the jocks he knew she preferred. ”Maybe that’s why we don’t work. I’m me, and not someone else who’d go running with you and play sports. Oops.” Placing his hand over his mouth he looked as if he was mocking her at the mistake she’d made to be with him; and in a way he was. He never understood why she chose him; he wasn’t the kind of guy she wanted in her life. Not only because of what he had said but also because he was trouble and she seemed to want to steer clear of that, but who was he to judge her for picking the wrong choice? Sometimes being wrong just felt right.
”I have told you before that I needed you, and you laughed in my face and told me I was strong and didn’t need you. So I learned it was best to not say it all because you would just laugh again and again and again.” Even that hadn’t been her intent when she’d told him was strong without, that he didn’t need her, it was how it had felt. And he could only tell her so many times, eventually she’d hopefully see it but even now she proved she hadn’t. Forcing a smile he’d pretend it was okay; the last thing he wanted was for her to feel sorry for him and have them going off on some other pointless argument. He held up his hand to hopefully stop her from carrying on, and if she listened to his actions hopefully he’d get the last word and it’d be dead and buried; it was the closest he came to talking about his feelings and realizing that had him wanting to get as far away from it as possible. ”Don’t lecture me on what I should have done Jenkins. You know as well as I that I wasn’t the only one pushing, and that I wouldn’t have had you any sooner. I only wanted to sleep with you for the longest time…anything more than that had never crossed my mind.”
Recalling how he’d only been pursuing her so hard to merely have be another notch on his belt had his stomach tighten in knots, he felt sick at how he would’ve just used her like that; something would have never bothered him before but she’d managed to change something in him. ”Plus you had your knight in shining armor, Preston. It’s not like I stood a chance against him…because at that point in time he was perfect in your eyes.” He was tired of this fight, but who wouldn’t be tired after feeling like they had to compete with the perfect guy who came before them. She could tell him time and time again that he was wrong but that didn’t change what he knew to be true. Forcing soft chuckle he shook his head, ”We can’t forget though that I wasn’t big on dating. Soo I had to keep you at a distance, didn’t want you breaking down my walls…but you did anyway.” The last few words came out in a whisper, or at least that was how it sounded to his ears as he thought he’d lowered his voice; hoping she hadn’t heard his omission.
Standing in silence he allowed her words to wash over him; once again she sounded as if she hadn’t a clue what she was talking about, but merely trying to keep defend her cousin. Even know when Derek was trying to tell her his side of the story; gritting his teeth together he closed the space between as he bared down on her, whatever somber mood he’d been in moments ago now gone. Left to die out in the fire that now raged inside him, that rage which was directed at her as he glared at her through menacing eyes. ”Just stop Aubrey! Just fucking stop defending him!” He barked at her hoping his elevated tone would make sure she received the message. ”I’m not going to fucking hurt him again I said I’d thank him, take him for a beer or something. Because he said what I knew all along. And he just found the right day to say it. But you don’t see that because you’re trying to have it both ways.” Speaking the words through clenched teeth he was fighting off the urge to be nicer to her, he couldn’t do that not yet.
”You have this blind familial allegiance that keeps you from admitting I’m not the only one at fault here. You want me to be the bad guy so I am but don’t fucking turn it around and say I should know how you feel…you obviously can’t even decide how that is yourself. You want to hate me for hurting him, hate me. You want to like me for being a nice guy for once in my life, then do it. But they’re both me and you’re going to be at war with yourself for a while if that’s the case.” Reaching for her hand without looking for it he seized between his own and pressed it against his chest, not caring if she felt the out of control beating of his heart. ”Let me make if easy for you I’m the bad guy. I’m reckless, impulsive, manipulative, spiteful, self-destructive…to name a few of my worse of qualities. But I’m loyal to those I care about, I’m protective of them, and I may treat them crudely but I won’t apologize ever. You seem to think I knew it was your cousin and that only is why I hurt him, when I didn’t have a clue. I wouldn’t do anything to intentionally hurt you…unless you piss me off…but you hadn’t. So be mad at me for being myself but move on I can only answer your goddamn questions so many times and you won’t get different answers.” He urged her forward hoping this would be the end of it. What else could she hope to gain from asking more questions about the night?
Yes he’d lunged at her cousin for his smart mouth, yes he’d punched him for it. But he’d given him a chance to explain himself and instead he dug a deeper a whole, and even if she hadn’t witnessed the events herself he thought she knew him well enough to know that something her cousin had done had set him off; that the blame didn’t rest solely on his shoulders. Swallowing discreetly he released her hand and began to back away from her, ”And don’t hang any pictures of me because you think it’s what I want. Fuck what I want it’s not important. That’s it, it’s done end of discussion soo drop it.” Looking at her with a warning glance he wasn’t in the mood for her to challenge him on it.
What he wouldn’t give for the Bree who wouldn’t try his patience and would be defusing the situation.
The draw they had to each other once again managed to suck them into each other, and though they could probably yell at one another for another hour or two even ten all that anger seemed to be replaced by another emotion. Passion or lust as Derek would more correctly call it. Even if she was going to be difficult about it he could tell she wanted him just as badly as he wanted her.
Smirking at her comment he emitted a low throaty chuckle as his face leaned in closer to hers, ”Private? Are you shy all the sudden?” She tried to hide her excitement, but he saw it and knew he was on the right track. If she hadn’t shown any hint of liking the direction he was leading her that wouldn’t have stopped him in the slightest, but it was better knowing she was on board. Grinning when she’d run of places to go as he had her pinned between him and the wall Derek felt his body mold against hers. Certain there was no place he’d rather be. ”That seems like yesterday, and I have a great memory. You know they say sensory memories are the easiest to recall, I can help you remember…maybe bite my lip.” Licking the spot he’d bit that night he remembered the taste of copper that had flooded his mouth, and why he’d hurt himself in the first place but that was a distant memory and irrelevant.
He knew, all too well, that she was just being her usual stubborn self. Not wanting to admit that she was in the mood and just wanted him to get her all worked up. He was fine with that; watching the rise and fall of her chest as it picked up pace, listening as her breathing became quickened, and seeing the way her eyes danced over him to watch what he was doing. It was good to know that he could drive his girl as crazy as she drove him, it felt like the best kind of payback he’d ever dished out. Even in her silence she spoke volumes with her actions; drawing him in closer as his lips attacked her skin. He was ready to take her right there, keep this going, but someone how she’d managed to squeak out a question that had him craning his neck back away from her.
She was lucky for the time being.
Getting lost in the kiss Derek’s tongue slipped from his mouth and teased her lower lip to deepen the kiss, but instead felt the faint brush her lips against his as she spoke up to voice her doubts about running away with him. Rolling his eyes he was sure he was close to breaking her. ”Bree! He whined in the most pathetic voice, one she might mistake for him missing the feel of her lips against his. ”Live a little. Be spontaneous and just go off with me somewhere…anywhere. Just us…alone…together. We don’t need to think about anything darling we’re being spontaneous together, very unpredictable.” Waggling his eyebrows suggestively he pressed his lips against hers once again, trying to coax her into it by playing dirty. She was just lucky his hands were holding her up and they couldn’t ravage that delicious body of hers.
That slender frame he suddenly felt like putting down the second it felt like she’d knocked the wind out of him by kicking him in the gut; she couldn’t trust him? That was quite the blow, standing there numb for a beat longer than he should he tried to shake himself back to reality. Shaking his head to dismiss everything she was saying, he didn’t want to hear it, he forced a smile and looked at her with dead lifeless eyes. ”It’s fine I get it, you don’t want to run away with someone you don’t trust. That’s understandable…just forget I said anything.” Widening his eyes he tried to look as if he were begging her to drop it; something that shouldn’t be so hard as he wanted her to, but he was having conflicting feelings at the moment. ”Whatever you want is fine.” Derek nodded trying to reassure her that he was fine, when in fact he wasn’t. The woman he never lied to didn’t trust him. It was hard to process anything else.
He stood before her unresponsive, and if she’d wanted to get away from him she could probably do so easily. He wouldn’t stop her; he’d just stand there in a stupor stuck on how she didn’t trust him. It felt like deep down he’d known along she hadn’t. Wasn’t that why he’d told her to be honest about how she thought he cheated on her, because she didn’t trust him. Fluttering his eyelids opened and closed he just barely caught what she said about focusing on the here and now and merely nodded his head in response; it was probably best but he didn’t even want to focus on that.
The taste of her lips brought him back as he kissed her back, feeling her body slip free of his hold he didn’t try to stop her but somehow she couldn’t get away from him; probably because his body hadn’t budged an inch away from hers to allow her toe space to wiggle free. At her words he moved so he was next to her and could slide down the wall. Instead of fighting again he felt defeated and would let gravity bring him down. Bringing his knees up near his chest his draped his arms over them and stared off into the room ahead, hearing her muffled words he forced a faint chuckle. ”You mean you missed the version of me you liked.” They should be past it all but a part him just had to bring it back up. She couldn’t be all nice to him after a blow like that, it was like she was laughing in his face; he might have done the same only moments ago but he’d been trying to get her to not be angry with him and here he was trying to mend whatever they had and she admitted it might be more broken than he thought. Sighing he let his head hang wishing he had more booze to drown himself in, because it was easier to navigate those waters than the ones he was lost at with Bree.
