Merrick knew that the kind of gambling she'd been doing was illegal outside of designated casinos, but that did not stop her as she sat on her fathers businesses steps making a little money off of the locals before they entered. Her game of choice was cards, her having mastered a deck many years ago, and with her sleight of hand she was truly unstoppable. None of these people knew it as she looked to be just another street kid trying to make a living. She had on a signature pair of black leather pants that hung to her curves like you couldn't imagine, and she had on a turtleneck sweater for a top. Sure it wasn't the most flattering of clothing but it hardly left things to the imagination as it hugged her chest. Merrick was all about letting it all hang out but given the temperatures she had to be a little modest.
Her next victim came walking towards the steps of the casino and she could see that bulge in his pocket. He looked like he'd been coming straight from the bank after taking a little deposit out for some playing money. There's no way he'd be leaving with anywhere near that size bulge afterwards, not when both her and her daddy stuck their greedy little fingers into his pocket, but her father would have to wait since now it was her turn. "Excuse me sir, you look like someone who's got a good eye for trickery, care for a little attempt at magic?" She smirked, her eyes orbitting that bulge in his pocket before she pulled them up to make eye contact with him.
The man looked her over like a hungry hyena and chuckled as he shrugged his shoulders, why not? He crossed both arms infront of his chest as Merrick shuffled the cards while standing up to be at his height. "Now i'm going to make you a deal, twenty bucks says I can find your card," she fanned the cards out and motioned for him to draw one from the deck. He did as she told and agreed to the waiger and she nodded, motioning for him to slide the card back in the deck. He did as prompted and soon Merrick was shuffling again trying to find his card. This was the oldest trick in the book. "You better get that money out because I found your card. Is it the queen of diamonds?" She looked confident and her face fell when he said it'd been the wrong card. "It has to be this one, are you sure?" She knew it wasn't but he didn't know she did. "Fine, a deals a deal." She pulled a crisp twenty dollar bill out of her pocket and handed it to him.
He took the money and started past her up the stairs but she caught him again, "please sir, give me another chance, how about double or nothing?" He complained it was too cold to stand around for a half baked magician and started up the stairs again. "Wait, i'll up the bet to one hundred dollars, can't say no to free money can you?" The man stepped back down to where she was and shrugged his shoulders as she shuffled and fanned the cards out. The second he pulled one from the deck she knew the bet was on and she should just take his money now and be done with it. She acted like she had before, uncertain as she thumbed through the deck when he'd put his card back, but she stopped at a certain card as her eyes widened as she looked up at him.
"I guess i'll have to dig deep for that hundred dollars because I doubt your card is a silly three of hearts," his face dropped and she could tell that'd been his money. "Pay up," she put her hand out to collect but watched as he started calling her a con artist and pushing past her. "Hey I don't think so mister, you get back here and give me what belongs to me." He called her another name as she pounced on him from behind pulling him back until they both fell down the few stairs he'd climbed to the casino. Fuck, that hurt like a son of a bitch but that fucker took money from her and didn't give her what was due. "Oh so it was all fun and games while you're taking my money but the second you have to give it up i'm a fucking con artist? Give me the money, now!"
He started to holler as she wrestled to try to pin the older man on the snow covered ground to get what was coming to her, and eventually she could hear the familiar rat behind her as someone must have called the police about the disturbance. "You think they're going to help you? Honey I could have you dead before they show up now give me the fucking cash." She grabbed his collar and held him to the ground, but by this time her father had caught on to what was happening and his goons were racing down the steps to pull her from the man. "Don't ever step foot at daddy's casino again you stupid fucker." She smirked as she pulled herself away from the goons and went back to where she was relaxing. What this guy didn't know was while she had him on the ground wrestling she was able to retrieve some bunched up bills from his pocket. She smirked as she patted the pocket her newfound money was while the goons escorted that man off the premises. Now she figured she'd just wait for the police to come and question her about what happened so she could get out of it like usual. Cops in this city were straight up jokes.

Dean had been out on patrol for most of the day. Here in Jacksonville the crimes were there, but they were mainly petty so his job didn't hold too much excitement. This had been the exact reason he had chosen to settle down in a smaller town instead of joining the Chicago PD. A lot of the cops were discouraged by such little things to do except mainly deal with speeding tickets and other minor things. Dean wasn't at all discouraged by this though he did his best to search out anything wrong and right it. It was just who he was and that was always doing his best to make sure the good guy comes out on top. He had seen enough injustice in his own family to know even the smallest bid of bad was enough to ruin a good person so he would do everything in his power to stop that from happening. He had gotten lost in his thoughts as he heard his radio crackle to life. His listened intently to the call and instantly knew where the place was located and lucky for him he was just a few blocks away. He lifted the radio to his mouth as he responded to the call, flipped on his lights, and getting the go ahead to head to the location.
Dean pulled up to the local casino and turned off the lights as threw it into park and stepped out looking over to see familiar face. Now Dean had been to this casino quite a few times since starting because of the trouble the owner's daughter would end up causing. He spotted her familiar face on the steps out front as he began to casually make his way towards her. "Aren't you getting tired of seeing my face around here?" A light smile graced his face before it settled back into his serious manner. He couldn't complain himself about being called out here so many times because it was his job, but good lord you'd think the girl would learn. He finally reached the steps and placed his hands on his belt as he knew he had to find out what had happened here. The only problem was this girl always managed to downplay the hell out of it and get away with everything. "So, do you mind telling me what happened here?" He asked knowing it probably wouldn't be the truth, but that wasn't going to stop him from doing his job. He needed to figure out the best he could as to what had happened here and why.
Dean kept himself from checking the girl out, but it wasn't easy. The girl was intriguing even if she led such an eventful life that Dean would never want any part of, but since he was on the job he liked to remain professional. Which was why on the exterior he looked incredibly serious and tried to be somewhat intimidating. The uniform was usually intimidation enough for most the people he questioned on the job, but with this girl it didn't seem to matter at all. It was frustrating when he couldn't get what he wanted out of people. The law, the thing he upheld everyday, could be used against him to help people get away with things he was trying to stop. He held his tongue though and would listen to whatever story she decided to tell this time. He reached into his back pocket to grab his pad of paper and a pen. He waited for the girl to tell him her version of the event.

When Merrick saw the lights heading in her direction she just chuckled as she leaned back against the step getting ready for whoever they had sent at her. Surprisingly enough it didn't take long for them to get to the casino. They must have already been close she figured as she watched the car come to a stop and a tall figure climb out of the drivers seat. It wasn't until he was around to her side of the car that she'd seen who it was, and a brilliant grin spread across her face as she sat up in her seat excited as she heard his voice.
You could tell she'd been hoping for him over any other officer on the force, and after his question she laughed shaking her head not taking her eyes off of him. "Who could get tired of that face? It's a surprise you're still single," she smirked, of course unsure if he'd been truly single or not but she had a feeling. A guy like him paid little attention to girls and all of his attention on the badge. "Or is it just because you're waiting for the perfect girl to come along and sweep you off your feet?" Merrick was completely changing the subject from why he was really there, but she knew he wouldn't let her do it for long.
Sure enough he kept it business as he asked what had happened and she sighed standing up and stepping towards him. "All business and no pleasure with you Officer Gallagher, such a pity." Merrick checked him out discreetly as she circled the officer standing there pad and pen ready for whatever story she could cook up. "Don't you want to ask me how I am first?" She smirked as she stopped walking once she'd reached infront of him, but she knew he wasn't going to budge on needing to know the story so she sighed taking a step back and looking behind her towards the stairs.
"I needed some extra money so I found a guy that'd give me some cash for some, you know favors, around the back of the building. I did everything he wanted me to, talk about a sick pervert that guy was, and he stiffed me on the cash afterwards. Can you believe that, give a guy the time of his life and he just fucks me over again when he doesn't pay up?" Her mouth dropped open as she shrugged, "so I beat his ass and took what was rightfully mine." She kept a straight face through this entire thing but knew he wasn't having a hard time believing her.
"You see right through me don't you?" She could tell he knew she'd been lying and sighed, looking from him back to the steps. "How about you make this easier and tell me what you think happened so we can get our stories straight? You're the cop, don't you already know why you were called here? Or were you just hoping i'd be here so you could get a glimpse?" She chuckled stepping back, even whirling around once to give him a small show, before she stopped and dropped down onto the step kicking her feet out infront of her and getting comfortable. "I don't get why you keep giving me the same lecture over and over again officer Gallagher, you'd think you'd learn by now that it's in one ear and out the other with me, and yet that never stops you from continuing on with it." She shrugged, curious to see what kind of lecture he'd give her tonight.
