Alright, so here is what we need. Patience, the adorable English Princess and Soon to be Duchess; comes from a royal family - thus it's very likely that they'd either try to marry her off to someone they see worth while, or try and set her up with someone. Thus, enters JASON (as we'll call him for now). JASON grew up around her, always going to the same parties she was at, trying to be friends with her, get her to open up because that is what he was told to do. He'd be the son of a lesser family, but still high upper class. They figured the best way to get higher still was for JASON to marry into royalty - thus, they started weaseling him into Patience's parties, and outings.

Unfortunately, JASON isn't the dating and marrying type. From day one Patience wasn't fond of him, and so when the option to go to America came, she was rather excited at never having to go to another dance and see him. Little did she know that he would decide to follower her. JASON is a bit of a womanizer though, he likes jumping from woman to woman, so he's never, ever faithful. And when he is with a woman, it's not uncommon for him to beat her, or to torture her with cruel, evil words. Of course, they always come back to him, because he has perfected the art of apologizes, and can convince them that he's honest when he says he'll never do it again.

So he comes to Jacksonville, following Patience, and pretends to be someone else, getting close to her, winning her trust, and then once they're about a week into their relationship, he reverts to his old self, trying to pressure her into bed with him, hitting her, snarling at her. At first, she'll try to get out - but when he realizes she is avoiding letting anyone know that she's an English Princess, he holds that over her head, threatening to tell everyone who she really is, if she doesn't stay with him, so she relents and tries to suffer through it.

Eventually close friends, and her body guard-brother-cop friend; are all likely to begin to notice bruises, or how she flinches when JASON's name is mentioned, either way he'll be caught, sent away, and Patience will be free, but until then, she needs a very dark man to come in and try to use her to gain more power.
