Veronica decided to go for a run despite the bitter winds and gloomy sky. She really just needed to stretch her legs and some time to think. It seemed like no matter where she was she never had time to herself anymore. With her final paper due, for her lit class, and exams coming up, with her other courses, she was going rather crazy without a moment to herself. She figured a run was the only way to clear her head and as she stepped out into the cold winter wind she knew she was right. She took a deep breath, shivering in delight at the sensation of the fresh air on her skin. She quickly zipped up her black hoodie before bending down to tie up her shoes. Her shoes were new, Pink and black Nike’s. She really wasn’t sure about running in them, after all she had just purchased them the day before but she never could resist a new shoebox sitting in her room. Plus, she reasoned these had the best grip out of all her shoes. Though this probably wasn’t true seeing as she had a closet full of them. Standing up she did some brief stretches before securing her purple headphones in her ears. Clipping her ipod onto her arm and she hit shuffle and began down the sidewalk at a slow pace.
It took her while to ease into running. If she was honest with herself she really hated running. But she forced herself to like it because it was good for her. No, running was not her thing. She never could go to that place experienced runners went. The place where there is just you and the ground. Where each stride becomes effortless and running becomes as easy as breathing. No, that never happened for her. However, thinking was her thing. She thought about everything constantly and this made the running easier. Veronica was quite sure her form sucked but she tried to ignore these thoughts after a while. The music helped her ease into the run. The beat kept her stretching her legs out in front of her and pumping her arms at her side. Before she knew it her thoughts began to drift and the music became a backing tract in her mind.
Professor Koufman was tough this week. All that freaking reading and for what? It wasn’t going to be on the exam and really there wasn’t anything significant about the short stories. A woman unhappy with her life, how cliché, and man who went on a walk and discovered himself. How boring! Why couldn’t he just let us have the week off? With an eight-page paper due in two weeks a week or two off is certainly justifiable. I really need to paint more this winter. That tree would be perfect for that landscape I started last month. I’m not really sure when I’d have the time. And what’s with HIM this week! He just kept staring at me in western civ., like he doesn’t have anything else to do. It’s rather obnoxious, he could at least speak a few words to me instead of staring. We are adults. I, no, really I have better things to think about. I need to call home when I get back. Mom’s probably worried. Two days without a phone call and she might call the police. Like email is a tough thing for her to grasp! How impersonal she says! What bull. She should spend more time worrying about Sophie, now there is someone much more deserving of the worry.
Absent-mindedly Veronica turned onto a side pathway through the park. The dead leafs of the ground crunched under her feet and made the park look rather dull. The dullness was serene for her. Letting her mind wondered to the scenery to the side of her she didn’t notice the branch in the path way and gracefully fell down.
“Shit” She groaned and grabbed her knee. “That hurt”
“Are you okay?” Veronica looked up to see a very tall guy standing over her. Of course, she couldn’t fall down in peace. There was always someone there to see our most disgraceful moments but never to see our best. Why is that?
“Yes, I’ll be alright just scraped my knee is all. I really should learn my lesson. It’s not the first time I’ve fallen, nor will it be the last.” She accepted the hand the stranger extended to her and got to her feet. Brushing herself off she mumbled her thanks.
“That’s good, it was a nasty fall. I must say I kind of saw it coming. I was hoping you were going to jump over it. I tried to yell but your music must be a bit loud.”
“Ahh yes.” Veronica could feel her face getting red. “Well, I should be on my way. Thanks” Before the strangers could say anything else she started jogging back the way she came. She had had enough running for one day.
