Rat had been taking a rare break from his duties to travel back to Pewter. After the nightmare that had erupted in the crater that was once Saffron, Rat was eager to rest his tired bones and take some downtime to heal up at home. Days and days of sleeplessness back in Saffron had rendered the entire flurry of carrying and directing and bustling an exhausting blur in his memory that had left his body broken and his pokémon worn. Leaving his near-feral team of helpers back in the forests surrounding Saffron, Rat had brought Buddy back to his childhood home for some much-deserved TLC.
Upon their arrival in Pewter they had been greeted by Rat's huge and accomodating family. Buddy burrowed himself a resting place in the backyard he had torn up during his reign of terror as an unmanageable gible in Rat's youth and Rat's overbearing mother had made sure that her Ranger son barely had to leave the comfort of his bed while he recuperated. The affection, attention and lazy comfort were a blissful change of pace from the rough living he was used to on the Routes, and Rat figured that he would head back to Saffron to manage things after a few days of hot food and having the dirt out from under his fingernails. He had been sitting on the porch with his youngest brothers watching Buddy and Groucho (his passionate dragon-training father's aging Dragonite) bump each other lazily around the front yard when the earth under Pewter began to shake.
Dutifully, Buddy froze and immediately whipped his sharklike head to look at Rat, waiting for a command, but Rat hesitated in the comfort of his porch swing. The calamitous sound of a hyperbeam rippled through the air from downtown, followed by the vibrating aftershocks of Magnitude under the Rider household. Rat stood quickly, signaling Buddy with one hand, "Go check it out! I'm right behind you!" The garchomp didn't wait to respond before launching into the air. With a boom and a blur, he was gone as Rat ran inside the house.
He laced on his boots and grabbed his jacket (red and black, emblazoned with the round emblem of the Rangers) before racing out the door on foot. His mother cried for him to take her rapidash into town as Rat raced past her, the lights in the house flickering. To save her old pokémon the work and the danger, he pretended not to hear her and hit the sidewalk running.
Meanwhile, Buddy slowed once he found the melee, gliding low over the bedlam in the street. His beady eyes searching for a familiar face, he almost missed the ice beam being launched from a golduck in the madness below. Rolling out of the way of the potentially devastating attack, he wheeled to fall in on the golduck in time to watch it collapse under a burst of lightning from another pokémon. Fleeing that scene, he started to head back to retrieve his human partner when a bolting Dodrio fell under his shadow, pecking ineffectually up at him. Never one to avoid a fight (especially when Rat wasn't around to stop it and especially when he thought he would win) he somersaulted to land gracefully facing the dodrio and its helpless passenger, his face pinched into a growl.
Rat had few talents aside from his advantageous timing, and as he breathlessly rounded a corner, he saw his garchomp squaring off down the block. "Buddy!" He yelled hoarsely, and the garchomp threw his head back, dropping his fighting stance to awkwardly turn his head on its meaty neck to look at Rat. As Rat sprinted up to the situation, Buddy stomping clumsily aside and strangely, suddenly calm in Rat's presence, he gasped for breath and looked up at the terrified dodrio's terrified rider. "Kanto Ranger," he panted, his usual pride not showing in his introduction of himself through his breathlessness. "What's going on?"
