Melissa couldn’t help but to feel a little nervous about being here with Tim, and talking the way they were. They’d never had heart to heart chats when they were both at home, and ever since she left to go to New York for school, the path of communication had all but disappeared into thin air. But really, they were more like perfect strangers. It was as if she was actually seeing Tim as her little brother, not just a nuisance that lived in her house. She could admit that even though they’d never gotten along at home, she did want him to be safe and happy wherever he went. The same applied to Becky. She didn’t want anything bad to happen to them, regardless of the fact that she tended to be the one to harm them. She just never thought that mattered. And now she was realizing that she was actually causing more harm to them then anyone else could.
But her harm had been internal. Sure, there were things in the world that could cause them internal pain, damage on their emotions. But to have their own flesh and blood turn on them the way she had… it was something she had a hard time coming to terms with. She didn’t want to be that person. No any more. She wanted to the older sister they could look up to. The sister they could come to with problems or if they just wanted to talk. She knew that would take time, and she knew she rightfully deserved to wait for them to trust her again. And they deserved to have a good sister. She already felt guilty about her reaction over the Christmas break. Tim hadn’t deserved that. She knew she should have kept her opinions to herself. But her old ways had surfaced and she had exploded, causing more trouble than necessary. She could still see the look on Tim’s face when she’d reacted. It was a mix of anger, shock and pure misery.
Mel hated that look. She knew he’d taken a risk telling everyone, and she hadn’t helped the matter at all. She was even surprised her parents hadn’t spoken to her about it. Then again, their parents were hard-core pacifists. They didn’t like confrontation, especially between all the kids. They’d tried when all three siblings were younger to get them all to get along, but had given up when nothing had changed. And she wanted to show her parents that she and her younger siblings could actually get along. A small smile covered her lips as Tim stated they hadn’t made it easy. “I guess not… and trying is all we’ve got right now. At least, I want to try to get enough of a breakthrough that we can show to Mom and Dad when we go home for spring break.” She wanted her parents to be proud of them all for getting along.
She knew all their fighting did was to stress out their parents. But at least Tim seemed to want to believe everything could change and get better. It was an odd feeling having one of her siblings on her side. It had never happened before. And she had a feeling that their sister was not going to like that fact. A small chuckle found it’s way out of her mouth as Tim’s next sentence was exactly what she was thinking. “Yeah… I think she might try checking you into a mental institution to make sure you’re still sane.” Becky was the least likely to want to believe this was for real. Mel knew she had to try harder to make her sister understand that she just wanted to start over. There had to be things Becky went through that she could have used a sister to talk to about. She knew it was too late for a lot of things, but she could be there now.
