Jaylynn stood looking out at the waves, glad she chose a place with a beach. She made sure her wetsuit was zipped up all the way before she picked up her brand new surfboard. She had to choose a long board because the waves here were nothing compared to those in Santa Cruz, long boards are better for smaller less intense waves. Everything around her was new, but the beach and waves were home, no matter where in the world she was. She smiled to herself and began to paddle out.
Jaylynn turned her board around and waited for a set of waves to come in, but the ocean was a little flat, so she took to laying on her back and look up into the sky. It was kinda cloudy but calm. It allowed her to get her thoughts together. She closed her eyes and just floated there and relaxed a little more. Unfortunately she was too relaxed when she felt the ocean begin to rise under her. It was too late for her to move so she wouldn't get flipped. She came back up sputtering and cursing out loud to herself. Finally she grabbed her board and climbed up on it again and paddled back to shore. "that worked out well." Jay shook her head and tried to fix her hair a little so she didn't look like she just got thrashed.

The ocean was a place that he wasn't too familiar with, but ever since he moved to New Jersey, he was able to experience what it was like to swim in ocean water. It was a lot different than swimming in their back yard pool or out at the lakes in Tennessee but he was getting used to it. Today happened to be a really nice day outside and Mason was hoping to get in a nice swim. As he approached the beach, he saw someone get flipped off a surfboard, a small laugh escaped him as he settled down in the sand with towels and whatever his sister happened to bring. However, he wasn't too worried about her at the moment, they were here to do separate things.
The water looked calm which meant he would be able to hold a decent swim without getting disrupted. Although, the sun was causing a lot of people to come out to the beach which meant it would be a tad more crowded than he wanted it to be. He wasn't too bothered about it, there were other things to do at the beach, like watching girls get thrown off their board.
Mason walked closer to the water after taking off his shirt and smiled to himself when he realized that the girl that had fallen off her board was back up now. It seemed as if she was trying to make it looked like nothing happened and nobody had saw it happen, which in reality, nobody really paid attention to one particular person. He stayed at the shoreline and sat down so that all he really got wet was his feet. The girl was keeping his attention though, which he thought was a good thing. Normally he focused more on his surroundings but this was different.

Jay took her board back to her car and stowed it away. She pulled her wetsuit off while making sure it didn't pull off her bathing suit. Finally she walked back to the beach and water. The beach calmed her down, even after the waves took her out. She wasn't paying any attention to where she was going, she just wanted to chill in the water and have fun before she had to focus on school or music. As she waded into the water, she felt herself forget anything she might have been worried about. When she was about waist deep, she dove into the waves and swam about 100 ft before popping her head back out of the water. She made a face as the salt water dripped off her.
Jay looked back towards the beach and noticed someone looking out towards her, but she ignored it and continued to play in the water. She let the waves push her further into shore than float her back out a little bit with out catching the under current. The rhythm of the water was easy to get in sync with, especially when high tide was moving in. She looked back at the person she noticed before, knowing that the water was going to move about 10 to 15 feet further inland and completely swallow him. She debated telling him, but figured he'd know to move before he got engulfed in the saltiest ocean in the world.

Mason noticed the change in the water but at the moment, he wasn't too worried about it. He had only come to the ocean one other time since he moved, which was about six months prior. They had moved in the winter but he didn't know enough people to constantly hangout at the beach that past summer. Now that it was a new year, he was beginning to meet more people at college and take in the place a little more. The sun felt good on his back, which he knew needed a little tanning, but he never felt the need to make his skin darker.
The girl that he had allowed himself to keep contact with seemed to notice him, but for some reason, he didn't look away. A small smile placed itself on his face before he felt water start to go further up him. He grumbled to himself and looked down at his legs as the water began to engulf them. Shaking his head, he stood up and started to walk back a little before the water came up more towards him. Last time, Mason hadn't been there long enough to deal with this sort of thing but now he was getting there right on time for the tide.
When he finally gained his balance back again, he waited for it to go back to normal before walking further in. The water was up to his waist now but that didn't bother him any. After all, he was a pretty decent swimmer. Before he realized it, he found himself diving under water to swim to wherever he could possibly get to. Once he popped back up out of the water, he looked around and realized he was relatively close to the girl he had set his eyes on earlier.
With a smile he found himself walking towards her and stopped when he was in hearing distance of her. "Have a nice tumble?" He had never been one to start off a conversation with boring traditional methods such as 'hey' or something generic. Instead, he liked to liven things up a little which resulted in him embarrassing a few people in the process.

Jay laughed, "Yeah, kinda wasn't expecting that one." She smiled sweetly at him then took back to her playing in the water. She felt a distinct want to splash him, but his hair was way too pretty to do that. She kept glancing back at him, hoping that it wouldn't be to obvious. Jay started to feel a little less calm in her surroundings. As much as she tried to relax, it was nearly impossible, so she just decided to make conversations. "I'm Jaylynn" She didn't quite know what else to say except that, not knowing how he would react to it.
Jay stared down into the water and watched all the little fish play around her legs, knowing they were just trying to use her heat. She chuckled to herself as the fish played amongst themselves. They calmed her down a little.

When she spoke, he couldn't help but pay attention. For some reason he was drawn to her but he couldn't place exactly why. It may be the fact that she had been surfing, which tied into swimming and that was one of his most prized things. All throughout his high school career, he was on the swim team and he was usually in the first five that placed. "I could tell, otherwise you wouldn't have come up looking like the little fish that get caught on shore."
Mason laughed, he wasn't trying to be mean he was only joking around with her. However, he knew that had the chance of going wrong considering he didn't know how she was or how well she could take jokes.
"Mason." He eased himself closer, but kept his distance reasonable so that he wouldn't make either of them uncomfortable. Mason could feel the fish around her legs as well and to be truthful, it sort of made him a little edgy. In Tennessee, he never really had to deal with the fish being up close and personal with him. Yes, they were existant, but not to the point that he had to worry about them. "I just moved here about six months ago. I'm not really used to the ocean just yet." His accent came out a little when he spoke, but he had been getting better and better at hiding the southern drawl.

"Well, it taught me not to lay out there instead of paying attention to the swells" Jay pushed her hair back out of her face, because salt water and eyes don't mix well. She looked back down at the fish and continued to watch them play around her. It kinda reminded her of Finding Nemo a little. "Southern boy, huh? I have go family down south. Don't visit much, though." His accent amused her, even thought it was kind of obvious he was trying to hide it. "And the ocean isn't a bad place, so long as you don't start bleeding in the water and attract some more, uh, not so nice creatures of the deep. Those things aren't very nice."
Jay had noticed Mason move a little closer to her, and for some reason it made her smile a little more and a slight tinge of pink surge into her face. Being her typical self she acted like it wasn't there and kept doing whatever she felt like doing. She felt the water swell around her again, and she dove under the water to keep herself from being taken by the wave, pulling him with her.

Before he was able to get in any more sentences, he felt himself being dragged along with Jaylynn. His hair was getting all messed up again but he tried to ignore it. When they popped back up out of the water he looked around and had a frown on his face. "Well if the ocean is such a nice place, why does it insist on messing up my hair?" This time, he wasn't really trying to hide his accent at all. If she had family from the south, then what would be wrong with him talking like someone that was from there? Nothing, as far as he was concerned.
Mason tried to straighten out his hair to the best of his ability but was unable to make it as nice as it had been. "Where is your family from?" He had traveled a lot in his life but he had to say that moving to New Jersey was probably his least favorite. It was too up north for him and he missed the heat of the sun from Tennessee. It wasn't too hot, and it wasn't too cold. At least, not for him.

Jay did everything she could not to laugh at his anguish over his hair, "Well, see, technically, it was me that messed up your hair, although, had that wave hit you, it would have messed up your hair too... lose lose isn't it?" She finally looked him fully in the face and caught those blue eyes, and everything around her froze. Her flushed face darkened and she looked back down. "What the hell is wrong with me" was all that was going through her mind, normally she was quick witted and full of sarcasm, but none of that was showing now.
Jay regained control of herself and her mind, "They live just outside of Knoxville, awesome area. Way too into football though. And everything is orange, it's odd" She finally looked up again and smiled sweetly at him, "So what made you guys move up here, bet yankees aren't your favorite of people."

"Yeah, well I guess if a pretty girl does it then it makes it a little better." Her darkened face was amusing Mason, and that was part of the reason as to why he said what he did. Making girls turn different colors was his specialty and he loved being able to say he could. "So, no, it's a win lose situation because you're pretty, but my hair got messed up." He matched her gaze and smiled softly at her. His blues eyes were shining due to the bright light coming down on him.
While Mason was originally from Nashville, he tend to care about the Volunteers. "I'm from Nashville, can't say I much appreciate the orange though." He shrugged, he liked football but they weren't his favorite team. In reality, he wasn't sure he had a favorite team. He just hoped that when the teams he absolutely could not stand were playing, that the other team would win. However, it normally didn't work out that way.
"So, are you from the south too then? You don't really have an accent. I know I do. It's ridiculous." Another frown appeared on his face but he made it disappear after a second of pouting. He was glad that he had decided to come to the beach that day because he had been given the opportunity to meet someone new.

Jay looked around her and then back at him. "Pretty girl does it? well who else is out here?" But then his second comment took her by surprise, "I... uhm... thank you? I think?" This guy was way too nice to be for real. "Nashville, so uh... Vanderbilt fan I take it?" She laughed and looked back down at her feet again.
"Nope, west coast girl, born in Santa Cruz, California. Hence the no southern accent. But I think accents are cool though, southern boys tend to be pretty cool so, there ya go" She didn't know what else to talk about. She was a surfer and drummer. That's all her world revolved around and she didn't know what he was into. So all she had was talking about either hanging out and swimming in the ocean or talking about middle and east Tennesse.

Mason found himself laughing at the shocked look on Jay's face. He shook his head and splashed the water in her direction. "No problem. And when I said pretty girl, I meant you." He looked down at the water and moved his legs away from the little fish that were by him. It was fun watching them swim away from him and come back.
"No, not really. I don't care much for Tennessee teams." Mason knew it probably sounded odd coming from someone that was born and raised in Nashville, but he wasn't too bothered with it. "I sort of prefer the Alabama teams. They're just better at what they do."
Santa Cruz? His eyes widened at the mention of where she was from. That was one state he had never been to, and he traveled a lot during his spring and winter breaks when he was back at his old school. It was just something his family enjoyed doing. "I guess. My sister takes the country thing a little too far though. She's odd. And California? That's one of the only states I haven't been to. How is it there?"

"I don't like college football, the only sport I follow is professional surfing to be completely honest." After that, Jay was completely lost for words, which is typically odd for her. She didn't know why she was getting so shy all of a sudden, it wasn't like her to get shy or nervous about anything.
"Yeah, born and raised in Cali, I loved it. Especially Monterey, gotta love the aquarium and the Fishermans Warf. And yet again, Jay got lost for words. She hoped that she could get over it and just be herself, but it was hard.
Finally she just splashed at him and let herself just open up. "My dad just threw me in the ocean and said swim or sink. So I taught myself to swim and then after that I found the wonderfulness that is surfing. So I spent my whole life surfing or behind a drum set."

Being as she was a girl, Mason didn't hold it personally against her that she wasn't really into college football. Plus, she had been out surfing earlier, even if all he had seen was her flopping into the water due to her lack of attention. "Well, I'm a big time swimmer, but I can't say I do much of the surfing. I'd probably fall off every time I try." He laughed at himself before pushing a bigger splash back at her. He was sort of childish at times, but he liked how he was.
"I'll have to take a trip over there some time. Although, it would be sort of a long drive and I'm not too big on planes." It was true, he had been frightened of them ever since he was a little boy. When he was only five, his family took him on an airplane to go to a different country and it had been a bad experience for him. "I really enjoy aquariums. Underwater animals are my favorite. Especially the sea turtles."
'So I spent my whole life surfing or behind a drum set.' So she was a drummer. To Mason, that was kind of a turn on. A girl who knew her music and could play? Well, in all reality, he didn't know if she could play or not, he had never heard her but she looked like the type of girl that was able to keep a beat. "You'll have to play for me sometime."

Jay wiped the water from her face and smiled, "Yeah, I love being in the water, there is something calming about it. I live for that feeling. I could swim or surf all day long and not get bored." At least they had the love of the water in common. "Cali is about a five or six day drive, so that is way too long in a car for this girl. I'd seriously rather fly or take a train." She splashed at him again. "I prefer otters, they are so adorable, but then again, they remind me of my Ferret.. soo"
At the mention of her playing for him she laughed, "Yeah, sure, I'll play for anyone who asks. I'd even teach if asked, I don't really mind" She loved her kit more than just about anything in the world, and just thinking about playing made her want to rush home and play for a few hours, but then again, she was quite content where she was, at the moment.
