It had slipped her mind for a moment that Kyle’s memory wasn’t 100%, he still couldn’t remember some of the simple things and when he mentioned his parents not approving of going fishing she couldn’t help herself but to let out a small laugh followed by a sympathetic smile. Ava stopped shuffling and held the cards in her hand trying to figure out the best way to explain both games, and which one to start with. Dealing the cards she counted out seven cards a piece and set the rest to the side. “Pick up your cards, and don’t let me see them.” She told him picking up her own and fanning them out. The cards were a mess but she carefully placed them in order one by one setting down the single pair she already had. “Any pairs you have, or two of a kind, place face down on the table.”
Carefully she continued explaining the rules of the game, taking new cards, how you won the game, etc. It seemed really like a simple idea maybe even too easy, but between the two games she had figured that easy was the place to start. Just as Ava began picking up the cards to start a new game she heard Kyle greet his mother and looked up towards the door to see her standing there with a gym bag in hand and a smile written across her face.
“No problem. I didn’t mind it at all.” Being there gave her something to do and she couldn’t have just stayed home knowing Kyle was trapped inside the hospital again. Ava shuffled the cards and placed them back in the box and on the table checking the time on her cell phone just as there came a knock at the door. Looking at Kyle with a crinkle of her nose after his mother’s arrival she climbed down off the bed taking a bill from her wallet and walking across the room to retrieve their food. “Ummm. We ordered pizza if you are hungry?” The look on her face one of apology knowing that she probably wasn’t going to approve of her ordering food not on the doctor’s strict diet plan, if there was one. “ and this Kyle is where you come in. Not my argument, I can eat pizza.” she joked as she placed the box down on the table. She wouldn’t open it until he got the okay from his mom, if she put up a huge fight Ava would just take it home with her and check with the nurse to get him something he could have.

Kyle’s skin turned a deep crimson when he realized that ‘Go Fish’ was actually a card game and not meant in the literal sense, he watched as Ava explained, nodding every now and then to show her that he understood, the game was very simple and it didn’t take long for him to catch up at all. ”So basically, you have to make pairs and the person with the most pairs win.” he said in conclusion to her explanation, just before his mom came in.
When the pizza arrived Kyle looked at his mother for any sign of disparagement, but his mom gave none, she simply laughed slightly when Ava said it was his fight, ”Honey, as long as you’re eating, I don’t have a problem with what it is.” she said to Kyle as she opened the box and took out a slice, but not for her, she handed the slice to Kyle, who smiled broadly before putting it more than halfway in his mouth, which was a stupid more since it was still very hot. Kyle just like Ava had no idea whether or not he was put on a specific diet, but with his mom reaction he was now sure there wasn’t one.
Kyle made strange noises as he chewed and swallowed the hot pizza, trying to get it down as fast as possible. Once he got it down he looked in turn at both Ava and his mom, ”That might not have been the best idea…” he said with a chuckle, he was so hungry he didn’t stop to think about the heat of the pizza. He then blew onto his pizza, in attempt to cool it down and once he was satisfied that it was cool enough, he ate the remains of the piece in his hand. His mom just shook her head with a smirk, glad to see Kyle in such a playful mood. She didn’t stay much longer though, she hovered a bit, but when she was convinced that Kyle was ok, she headed toward the door, ”I’ll see you tomorrow, love you, get well…” she said before giving Ava an appreciative look and leaving seconds later.
”Deal those cards so that I can kick your butt Ms. Edwards.” Kyle said to Ava after waving goodbye to his mother and watching her leave the room, glad to be alone with Ava again. It’s not that he didn’t want his mom to be there, he liked seeing her, he just wanted to be alone with Ava for a bit and rebuilt whatever was left of their relationship.

Taking a piece from the box Ava too was glad he was eating and most importantly his mother had no objections. It wouldn’t have been a great new beginning between them if she had already crossed her over something as small as pizza. Watching Kyle burn himself on his own piece she waited patiently til hers cooled before taking a bite, but then not having a problem finishing it off in just a few minutes. She had been starving since before she had even left school and waited until now to eat not even thinking about it until he was awake and out of the blue.
Ava was rather surprised that his mom had only come back to drop off the pajamas and stayed a few extra minutes before leaving. She gave her a smile and a wave as she shut the door behind herself and then turned back to Kyle who was talking some slam about kicking her butt in cards. Pulling the table back over the bed she took her seat again and dealt the cards out once more between the two of them. “You are on.”
In the next hour they got several more games in, including the chance for Ava to start teaching him the basics of poker. Checking the time on her phone she again put the cards away and set them on the table so he had something to do in his free time tomorrow waiting for his parents to return. “It’s getting kinda late. On top of school in the morning, I also have homework, and a shower to take.” She climbed down off the bed and picked up her bag throwing it over her shoulder. “I better get going too.” Pushing the table back up against the wall she squeezed in next to his bed where it had been setting her hand on his arm and leaning in to give him a quick kiss on the cheek. “I will come back tomorrow after school though, promise. If you need anything before then or something happens you better call or text.” She hated to leave him alone in the hospital again but she didn’t have much of a choice this time. The day off school would cost her too much with a test in one class and a project due in another, so with that she was gone taking one last look back before shutting the door as she exited the room.
