He was bent over his sketchpad, the only sound in the room the pencil tip scratching over paper, lead laying down gray lines in varying shades across the white paper. A slender figure stood upon a monochromatic cliff, a figure that could have been mistaken for himself except for the smirk that tipped one corner of his lips up - that was what marked the figure as his brother, that mischevious smirk like he knew a secret that'd just shock you if you knew it, and he was about to spill the details. Small wings seemed to cradle the slender body, curled around him as though to protect him from a cold wind, hazel eyes narrowed defiantly at whoever was looking at the picture. He'd seen that expression on his brothers face so many times it was imprinted on his mind, that defiant glare matched with the knowing smirk that just screamed 'smart-ass troublemaker' bcause that was who his brother was. He reached out for his pencils and yelped slightly, having forgotten about his ribs, and his brother was at his side quickly, handing him the pencils before peering over his shoulder curiously. "Are you givin' me the sparrow wings again, Toby?" He smiled, selecting a light brown pencil from the group and beginning to shade carefully, his brows furrowed in concentration. "Y-y-yeah, 'c-cause y-you're m-my s-sparrow, s-since A-angel d-d-doesn't fit." He teased lightly as Angel stuck his tongue out at him before giggling, handing him the dark brown as he reached for it. "Pfft. I'll have you know I found a halo on my pillow this morning, you ass!" The smaller boy grinned, raising his arms over his head to form a halo with his hands, and he frowned at his brother in mock reprimend. "L-language!" He scolded gently before bursting into a fit of giggles at Angel's mock innocent look, poking his brothers side with a pencil. His brother giggled as well before hopping back off the bed, holding his arms out from his body and hopping a little, doing his best imitation of a sparrow as he continued laughing, smiling at his brother. "A-a-alright s-sparrow, q-quit h-hopping a-around b-before y-you b-break s-s-something." His brother grinned at him before settling back on the bed beside him, and he smiled, leaning into the warm weight slightly as his head bent back over the picture of his brother, continuing to work on the shading of the wings with his head bent over the sketchpad, not minding the pain in his ribs because it was worth it to see his brother smile instead of being his trouble-making self. - - - - - WORDS! no matter what, i got your back, i'd take a bullet for you if it comes to that TAGGED! charlie north & draven rush OUTFIT! hurr. ring NOTES! most adorable brothers in the world xDD

Charlie had been trying for what seemed like ever to get Draven and Toby together, but there was always one reason or another that she just couldn’t. Now that Toby was laid up in the hospital trying to recover, he had all the time in the world to meet Draven and impress him with his art like she knew that he would. Draven had been bugging her for artwork to display in the studio, but it had to be from local artists. Charlie just knew that once Draven saw the amazing artwork that Toby drew that he would want to buy them from him. Even if Toby didn’t believe her that his work was flawless, she hoped that Draven would be able to convince him. As she waited for Draven outside the hospital, Charlie looked at her phone letting out a sigh. Still nothing, not one word. She tried not to think about it, Charlie knew she needed to just try and keep herself composed. Toby didn’t need to see her a blubbering mess, not after everything he had gone through. Compared to Toby’s problems, Charlie’s were absolutely silly. Placing her phone back in her pocket, she noticed Draven’s pearl white Audi pulling into a parking space, making her grateful that she didn’t have to stand outside or that she had to dwell on things any longer.
Watching Draven walk up to her, Charlie put on her best ‘brave face’, smiling at waving at him. ”Hey there handsome. How are you? Are you totally ready to see some amazing artwork and meet one of the sweetest people like ever?” From the moment she had met Toby, Charlie had a huge soft spot for him. He just reminded her of a little baby bear, hence her nickname for him. Toby really was one of her best friends and now, well he was going to be her brother as long as things went the way her father promised they would. Charlie hated to think negatively, especially when this was something so positive, but it was just so hard for he to stay positive lately. Walking into the hospital with Draven, Charlie felt like she could walk the hallways to Toby’s room with her eyes closed, that was how much time she was spending in the hospital checking on him. ”I think I’m going to ask Toby to do my c.d. cover. I have no idea what I want it to look like but I’m sure he can come up with something epic.” Charlie smiled at the thought. She had been working on writing a lot more than she usually did, it helped her purge her emotions and put them all down into songs. So far Charlie had almost enough songs to record a full c.d., something she planned on doing once Toby had gotten out of the hospital. Now most of her free time was spent looking after him.
As she and Draven rounded the corner, Charlie could hear the sound of Angel’s voice asking Toby if he was giving him sparrow wings again. She smiled. Toby was such a different person when Angel was around, it was like a glimmer of who he could have been. It absolutely warmed her heart to think that Toby could let go of his fear enough to joke around with his brother, especially with everything that was happening with them. In one day Toby had been beaten to unconsciousness by his father, watched Kolt beat his father to a bloody pulp, woke up in the hospital, a place he was never supposed to be, and found out that he and Angel were being removed from their father’s custody and hopefully being adopted by the North’s. That would be one hell of an afternoon for anyone, but Toby seemed to be handling it well enough. When she hadn’t heard anymore talking, Charlie stepped into the doorway smiling at Toby and Angel. ”Knock, knock. Feel like some company?” Without waiting for an answer, Charlie entered into the room. ”Babybear, this is my friend Draven, the one I was telling you that I totally wanted you to meet.” She looked up at Draven quickly before letting her blue eyes gaze back to Toby, then Angel. ”Draven, this is Toby and Angel, my soon to be little brothers.” Charlie giggled at the sound of it. That was actually the first time she had managed to say it out loud to someone that wasn’t part of her family.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Draven had known that Charlie had been going through a great deal lately in her personal life, as well as her family life, so when she called him and asked him to go down to the hospital to meet her friend Toby he couldn’t say no. After everything she’d done for him when quite frankly he didn’t deserve her friendship she never left his side. Charlie was one of the sweetest people he had ever known, maybe the sweetest. That wasn’t saying she didn’t have a mean streak, he’d seen it on more than one occasion, but she always managed to somehow forgive him and they’d worked through it. As he drove to the hospital, Draven thought about what Charlie was going through and it hurt his heart, but he knew somehow she would manage to get through it all, thing would work out, they just had to. Pulling into the hospital parking lot, Draven spotted Charlie standing on the sidewalk staring at her phone. The sadness on her face was so apparent that Draven wanted to jump out of his car and hug her, but he knew that wouldn’t solve anything. The less attention he drew to the situation the better off he knew Charlie would be mentally, so instead he pulled his Audi into the first available parking space.
Making his way towards his friend, Draven smiled at her. At least she was trying to be upbeat even if he knew better, he had to give her credit where credit was due. ”I’m doing great. How are you holding up beautiful?” Draven still hadn’t told Charlie that he and Kade had gotten engaged, it just wasn’t the right time, not after everything she was going through. He’d take the heat from her once she found out he had kept it from her for so long, but for now he just thought it was best to keep it a secret. ”I’m more than ready for this. If he’s half as good as you’re telling me he is I’m sure I’ll buy plenty of stuff from him.” Draven loved supporting local artist, whether it was music or another form of the arts. To him they were all so important and if given the right opportunity to be successful he knew that their entire lives could change. He always wished his life had gone differently, but the outcome and where he was at that moment, happy and in love with Kade, Draven wouldn’t have changed it for the world. As they walked through the hospital corridors, Draven tried not to think about all of the time he had spent in that very same hospital in high school. Grateful that Charlie spoke, he looked down at her smiling. ”Are you almost ready to start recording? I tweaked that one song you gave to me, not much, just added a few riffs to make it more raw, you know.” Draven knew Charlie wouldn’t be upset, that was one of the best things about their relationship. When it came to music they had the utmost faith in each other and always asked the other for advice.
Standing outside the hospital room door, Draven looked at Charlie with curiosity. He wasn’t quite sure that they had stopped, but whatever the reason it seemed to make her happy. That was the first genuine smile he had seen on her face since he had pulled up to the hospital. Hearing the two people inside the room joking around, Draven smiled himself. It sounded sweet inside the room. Following Charlie as she stood in the doorway, Draven let his golden eyes scan the room, looking at the two boys. They seemed so young, or at least much younger than Charlie. As they walked into the room, Draven smiled at the two boys, nodding with respect to each of them. ”It’s a pleasure to meet you Toby. Charlie has said some wonderful things about you, and even more wonderful things about your art. I’d dying to see some of it.” Draven wasn’t sure if he had any with him in the hospital, perhaps if he was lucky he’d see one of the sketches that Toby was working on. Looking over to Angel, Draven smiled. ”It’s a pleasure to meet you too.” He considered extending his hand out of respect, but he didn’t want to frighten either one of them. From what he had learned from Charlie, the two boys had been through enough to last them several life times. Draven looked at Charlie, her blue eyes sparkled with excitement. In her world of sadness, it was clear to Draven that these two boys were the one thing that was holding her afloat. They were her true angels whether she knew it or not.

”Knock, knock. Feel like some company?” He glanced up quickly at the voice, his eyes wide with fear before he realized it was just Charlie, pushing his glasses up further on his nose and flinching when his fingers brushed against the fading black eye that was still there. When his eyes fell on the male next to her though he stiffened, his head lowering quickly in submission, trembling fearfully because he didn't know who that was. ”Babybear, this is my friend Draven, the one I was telling you that I totally wanted you to meet.” His head carefully tilted up, his hazel eyes cautiously studying the older man, biting his lip silently. ”Draven, this is Toby and Angel, my soon to be little brothers.” He flushed slightly, his head ducking back down, although he found he liked the sound of that. It was a lot to take in - he still found it hard to believe that anybody would want to adopt him or Angel, it'd been them against the world for so long. Well, he could see why someone might want to adopt Angel - when he wasn't being a smartass, he was an adorable little kid. But him? He was broken, worthless - he'd been told for so long that nobody would ever want him that he believed it. ”It’s a pleasure to meet you Toby. Charlie has said some wonderful things about you, and even more wonderful things about your art. I’d dying to see some of it.” He flushed brighter, shifting uncomfortably and wincing as his ribs protested the small movement. His art really wasn't that good, was it? It was just something he'd always loved - that was all. Shyly he tipped the drawing of Angel towards them, his cheeks bright red as his eyes lowered, knowing it wasn't all that good compared to the artists Draven probably saw daily. He'd never had a 'lesson' beyond what he'd taught himself out of library art books. "I-i-it's n-n-nice t-to m-m-meet y-y-you t-t-too..." He murmured softly after a few seconds, realizing he was being rude and wincing again, this time from fear. He knew better than that, he was so stupid sometimes. ”It’s a pleasure to meet you too.” Angel tipped his head forward in acknowledgement, that same smirk as in the drawing curling one corner of his lips up, his eyes narrowed slightly as he studied the platinum-haired male warily. "Right. Nice to meet you." He could hear a little bit of doubt in his brothers voice and glanced over at him, met those hazel eyes so identical to his own and the brothers had their own silent conversation, his own eyes both scolding and questioning and Angel's eyes defiant and protective. - - - - - WORDS! no matter what, i got your back, i'd take a bullet for you if it comes to that TAGGED! charlie north & draven rush OUTFIT! hurr. ring NOTES! baha protective!Angel

Trying to keep the smile on her face, Charlie frowned on the inside when she saw the look of fear in Toby’s eyes just from the sound of her voice. She knew it would take him a long time to overcome the damage his father had done to him, but she wanted so desperately for Toby to be able to trust her and know that she would never in a million years do anything to hurt him. Charlie wished that there was something she could do to help him, but she knew that she was already doing everything she possibly could for Toby and Angel, now it was just a waiting game, something she was terrible at. She hadn’t expected Toby to be okay at first sight of Draven, she wasn’t sure he’d ever get used to him being there, he was barely used to her, so when she saw Toby’s body stiffen as he saw Draven, Charlie wasn’t surprised.
Crossing the room to the opposite side of the bed as Angel, Charlie didn’t want to make Toby anymore nervous by having Draven too close to his brother. He was healing but it was a slow process and she knew any sudden movement could set his recovery back which wasn’t something Charlie wanted. She already had to keep her hyper movements under control, which certainly wasn’t easy for her. Sitting down in the seat closest to Toby, Charlie gently placed her hand on the bed, her fingers touching his arm. She wanted to make sure that he knew that she was there for him, but her normal space invading ways didn’t work with Toby, it just scared him even more than he already was, which of course made Charlie feel terrible. She hoped that one day he wouldn’t flinch when she, or anyone else touched him or even came near him. Charlie had hope, she had faith that Toby would be able to work through all of this, now he just had to believe in himself.
Charlie watched Toby very carefully to see his reaction towards Draven. If she thought that it was too overwhelming for him Charlie would make sure that she and Draven left. Making Toby uncomfortable wasn’t her intention. Charlie let out a small giggle when she saw Toby’s face flush until of course she saw him flinch with pain. Looking at his artwork, Charlie smiled. Angel. She loved the way that he drew his younger brother, so sweet and angelic but at the same time so mischievous, it was fitting. ”It’s amazing babybear.” Charlie’s voice was soft, almost a whisper. She wanted Toby to know what she thought, but it wasn’t really about what she thought, it was about Draven’s opinion at the moment. ”I promise you, he’s okay. I wouldn’t have brought him here if he wasn’t.” Her voice again as soft as a whisper. Charlie looked up from the drawing and smiled at Toby and Angel.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Draven followed Charlie over to the side of the bed opposite from Angel, standing directly behind the chair that Charlie had sat in. He was taking his cues from her, unsure exactly how to move or react. Draven didn’t want to frighten either of them, but more so Toby since he was the one with so many physical injuries at the moment. He could see that Charlie was moving very slowly which was an amazing feat for her. Draven was pretty sure that he had never seen his friend move so slowly, not even when she was exhausted. It was like Charlie had two speeds, fast and warped speed and this fit into neither of those categories. Resting his hands on the back of the chair, Draven leaned closer to Charlie so he could get a closer look at the picture Toby was showing them. It was amazing, so realistic. Draven’s golden eyes went from the picture to Angel and back. Toby had captured the essence of the boy that was across the gurney from him. It was like he was looking at Angel the way Toby saw him, every single detail captured something important and amazing about the young boy. Charlie had been right, he was a phenomenal artist and if this was nothing more than a sketch, Draven was dying to see a more serious one. ”Charlie was right. Toby you’ve got an amazing gift and if you’re okay with it, I’d like to buy some of your artwork to display down at the studio. Maybe some for my house as well.” Draven stood back upright so as not to crowd Charlie or make Toby any more comfortable than he more than likely already was. ”Money is no problem, so whatever it is that you want I will be glad to pay it.” The idea of helping Toby was really something Draven wanted to do, both because he was a local artist, but because he also knew that he had a long road ahead of him and this might help him out.
Letting out a small laugh when Toby finally realized that he hadn’t addressed him, Draven smiled at the boy. He wouldn’t have been offended if he never responded, but he was glad that he had. ”It’s okay Toby. If you don’t feel comfortable enough to talk to me then don’t. I won’t be offended.” Draven glanced down at Charlie before looking back up at Toby and Angel. She had warned him that Toby would be wary of him and while Draven knew to expect it, it was just hard for him to see. He knew all about being afraid and not having control over his life, maybe not in the same way that Toby and Angel had, but he knew how defeating it felt. Draven knew that if he could make it through so could these boys, he just hoped that their road to recovery was a much easier road than his had been. He knew how heartbroken Charlie would be if anything happened to either one of them. Hearing the doubt in Angel’s voice, Draven nodded at him in respect. ”Angel the same goes for you. If you don’t want to talk to me, I’m not here to make either one of you uncomfortable, so please feel free to ignore me.” Draven smiled. ”If I make you all that uncomfortable I can wait out in the lobby while you visit with Charlie.” Draven wanted the boys to visit with their soon to be sister. It was so important that they have alone time to be able to process everything together as a family because soon enough that was what they would be.

it's in your eyes, a c o l o r fade out- - - - - - LOOKS LIKE A N E W TRANSITION, THE STARTING UP AND SHAKING YOUR GROUND. TURNING YOUR HEAD TO SEE A NEW DAY CALLING - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - He couldn't help but watch warily as they came towards the bed, the fact that they were away from his brother relaxing him only slightly. He managed not to flinch away from the feel of Charlies fingers on his arm, his muscles twitching slightly beneath her touch but that was all. He was getting to his older sisters tendency to touch - sister. He still wasn't used to that word. He was used to being the older brother, the protector - never the younger brother, the one who was protected. It was an odd thought, the fact that he would soon have new family - a sister and a brother he hadn't yet met, along with Charlie. And Kolt, of course.
Two years. The thought still left him feeling elated and oddly light, like he was floating from how happy he was. Just being around the senior made him happy, made him feel like nothing could ever hurt him again. He was still surprised Kolt had chosen him - the senior could have so many others, others who were so much better than him, but his lover wanted him. He quietly played with the ring on his finger as he watched them, a habit he'd fallen into. The feel of the cool metal always managed to soothe him when he felt anxious or scared, and sometimes he could almost feel Kolt's arms around him and comforting him.
"It's amazing babybear." He flushed brighter, shaking his head to deny her words quietly. It wasn't that good - it was just a sketch, and a rough one at that. He could see where he'd messed up different places, little things that made the drawing bad in his own eyes. He didn't understand why people liked his art so much - hadn't he been told often enough that art was a worthless waste of time, just like him, and that he'd never create anything good doing it? ”Charlie was right. Toby you’ve got an amazing gift and if you’re okay with it, I’d like to buy some of your artwork to display down at the studio. Maybe some for my house as well.” He wanted to buy it? But...his art wasn't worth anything, not really. Certainly not any amount of money. ”Money is no problem, so whatever it is that you want I will be glad to pay it.”
He shrugged a little, watching as Draven stood upright again, watching him warily but more relaxed then before. "U-um... y-you c-can h-have t-them..." He stammered softly, ducking his head down shyly. "T-they're n-not r-really w-worth a-anything... 'c-cause t-they're n-not t-that g-good." His skinny shoulders shrugged as he stared at his sketch anxiously, biting his lip. He wasn't being modest - he stated it like the statement was just another fact, which it was in his mind. His art wasn't worth money - he was pretty sure it wasn't nearly good enough to deserve getting hung up anywhere, but if Draven wanted to, he could. He didn't want to make him mad, he knew if he were Charlie's friend he probably wouldn't hurt him...but he didn't know him yet, and that made him wary.
Angel the same goes for you. If you don’t want to talk to me, I’m not here to make either one of you uncomfortable, so please feel free to ignore me. If I make you all that uncomfortable I can wait out in the lobby while you visit with Charlie.” His brother sighed, and he felt a head resting against his shoulder, though Angel was still eying Draven warily. "Mister, I think you're okay. Don't let my brother just give you his art, though. He'll keep insisting on giving it to you 'cause he's got no common sense, but if you accept it I will figure out where your studio is and graffiti it to hell and back, kay?" His brother offered the platinum headed male that trademark smirk, mischief dancing in his hazel eyes while he flailed and winced slightly from his ribs protesting the movement.
"S-sparrow, l-language." He scolded, and his brother rolled his eyes. "I know, I know. I'm gonna go get some food, kay?" And with that the younger boy slid off the bed and headed out the door while he just sighed, shaking his head slightly. Charlie's parents had no idea what they were getting into with Angel, that much was for certain. "S-s-sorry... h-he d-didn't m-mean i-it..." He stammered, trembling slightly as he eyed the older male, biting his lip nervously. Was he going to punish his brother for saying something like that? He wouldn't let him - he never let anybody hurt his brother.
does it f e e l like a head to lean on?- - - - - - - - A SNAPSHOT FROM WHERE YOU BORN. I'M LOOKING FOR YOUR HAND IN THE ROUGH, YOU'RE CAUGHT IN THE WIRE. WELL I'LL L I F T YOU OUT - - - - - - - - - - -

It took everything in Charlie not to let out a squeak or lunge herself at Toby when she realized that her gentle touch had barely elicited a response out of him. She had fully expected him to stiffen up or flinch in learned fear but his arm had barely even twitched. Did this mean that he was getting used to her? Was Toby beginning to trust the fact that she would not hurt him? Charlie could feel the smile on her face grow from ear to ear and then some more, like a Cheshire cat grin. She could feel the excitement run through her body and the longer she sat there the worse it was getting. Charlie wanted to hug her brother, just squeeze him and tell him that she loved him. Knowing full well that it wasn’t just about frightening Toby, Charlie realized that if she actually squeezed him she could break one of his bones that were healing. She had to calm herself down and quickly before her emotions got the best of her. Charlie fidgeted in her chair slightly before looking over at Angel to check on his reaction to everything. It was clear that he was skeptical and rightfully so. She would do whatever she could to make them both try and understand that Draven wasn’t dangerous, that he was okay and if she couldn’t then they would leave. Charlie didn’t want to push either of her new brothers into something they weren’t ready for.
Seeing the blush on Toby’s face made Charlie smile. He was damn near the cutest thing she’d ever laid her blue eyes on. So innocent despite all of the things that he had to go through with his father. Charlie almost couldn’t wait to get him out of the hospital so they could just chill and she could get him to try and relax a bit more, if he was capable of relaxing. Toby needed to just let go, he needed to do the things that he was never allowed to do, like stay up all night and eat candy and drink soda and listen to music all because he could and for no other reason than that. There were so many things that Charlie wanted to drag Toby to do and even though she knew it would take some time she fully planned on it.
Charlie sat back and just listed to the three males interact with each other. It was an interesting dynamic that was for sure. She loved the way that Draven had tried his best to make Angel and Toby feel comfortable around him, acknowledging the fact that they might not feel comfortable at all and if that was the case he would leave. It was nice to know that he could understand where they were coming from. Maybe he understood more than she had given him credit for. Draven’s parents had been awful, at least psychologically. A small giggle escaped her lips as Angel threatened Draven. Now that was adorable. She knew that there was no way that Draven would accept Toby’s art for free, he believed in the arts way too much for that which was one of the reasons she wanted him to come to the hospital and see Toby’s artwork. Charlie believed in Toby, she knew he’d do great things, he just needed that push to get him there and hopefully his confidence in himself would follow.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Draven wanted to keep eye contact with the two younger males but he knew that might just make them both feel threatened so he tried to keep his eyes on theirs for short periods of time. The last thing he wanted was for them to feel uncomfortable or that Charlie had brought him there for that purpose. She loved them both so much he could clearly see that and he knew that she wanted nothing but the best for them. Charlie had the worlds biggest heart, too big sometimes, but it wouldn’t be Charlie if she didn’t. That girl put her heart out on a limb so many times and sometimes it had gotten knocked off but for some reason she always managed to bounce back or at least that was how she appeared on the outside. Draven shook his head at Toby’s words. There was no way he was just going to take them. He knew that the North’s would take good care of him but when it came to the arts and it being your passion you just didn’t give it away. Toby had to learn that. ”There is no way I’m just taking it Toby. Stop being so hard on yourself, it is an amazing sketch.” Something told Draven that Toby would probably never admit or even realize his full potential, at least not just yet. Perhaps in time.
A soft chuckle escaped his lips as he heard Angel speak. It was cute that he was looking out for his brother which was also probably a good thing. Draven doubted that anyone had ever looked out for Toby a day in his life besides Angel and maybe a select few other people, Charlie included. ”You can relax Angel, there is no way I would just take his art. He deserves to be paid for them and he deserves big bucks. How about this Angel, you name me a price you think is fair that way we are all happy and I don’t have to go down to the studio one day and find it all trashed. Sound good to you?” He nodded at the younger male with respect. Draven wanted Angel and Toby to both be happy and he figured that if Angel was happy then Toby was too. He wasn’t quite sure if they knew that he was capable of paying whatever it was they would ask, but once he had a number they boys would soon find out that he wasn’t bluffing.
The dynamics between Angel and Toby confused Draven slightly. The younger of the two males seemed to be the protector of the two but Draven couldn’t help but feel like Toby did most of the protecting. He smiled and nodded at Angle before the boy walked out of the hospital room. Draven’s eyes turned to Toby, seeing the nervousness written all over his face. ”Don’t worry about it Toby, it’s perfectly okay. I mean he’s just trying to protect you and there’s nothing wrong with that at all.” That’s what family did, they looked out for each other, at least any normal family did that. Draven’s parents only protected him when they thought he had crossed the line and embarrassed them. He had never known what it was like to have a loving sibling relationship. Everything he was learning about love he was learning right now, with Kade.
