Towering over her and asking to go the accident site Kyle stood beside her after paying the bill ready to leave. When he had said he wanted to go it never crossed her mind that he might want to go right then but she should have seen it coming. Ava dug around in her bag for a minute searching for her keys and pulling them out before sliding herself out of the booth. “I guess you are right. Let’s go then.” Walking herself out and leading Kyle back to the car they left the restaurant in the rearview mirror in search of the exact place the accident had happened to hopefully give him the answers he needed.
Without even having to think about it Ava knew exactly where to go. It had been on the outside of town, county road 23, just several miles from where their actual destination had been that night. It was an old highway that they had rezoned after building the new turnpike and stuff years ago, to this day though it remained one of the easiest routes from one town to the next if you didn’t want to hit the huge interstate. There were trees everywhere and houses were scattered every few acres to miles apart, it definitely wasn’t the city anymore by any stretch of the imagination. As they topped the last hill the sun was setting in the distance as the car pulled off into a small area on the side of the road a few feet passed the actual place where it had taken place. Shutting the car off she dropped the keys back in her purse and set it on the floor board between Kyle’s feet. “Whenever you are ready.”

As they drove Kyle looked at the areas they passed, trying to see if something looked or felt familiar, but it didn’t, once they came to a stop he figured this was the area it happened, but he didn’t recognize anything. With a sigh he set his eyes on the horizon where the sun was slowly setting, causing the sky to turn a orangey grey as the color of the sun mixed with the few scattered clouds. Kyle tried clearing his mind, but he was still torn between wanting to remember and not wanting to seem like any more of a softy in front of Ava, ”Just give me a minute.” he said as he closed his eyes, mentally preparing himself for all possible outcomes. It took a few minutes before he finally opened his eyes and turned his head to look at Ava ”Thank you.” was all he said, his appreciation for her being there the reason he was thanking her and he was pretty sure she’d know that without having to elaborate.
As he opened the car door Kyle took a deep breath, as if he was about to dive into a pool of ice cold water, his body was tense. Once outside the car he let out his breath and turned around on the spot, taking in everything that surrounded him, but nothing came back, not a single flash of memory, nothing. ”Was I driving?” he asked suddenly, turning to look at Ava, if he wasn’t that would mean that there was someone else involved in the accident and if that was the case that person was probably not alive anymore, but his mom wouldn’t give him any details more than where it happened, so he was totally in the dark about everything. The look on Kyle’s face was one of both curiosity and desperation; he wanted to fit the puzzle pieces of his past together so badly so that he could move on, it felt like his past was holding him back from having a future, as if everything he couldn’t remember made him him and without it he would only be half the person he used to be.
Kyle was very disappointed in the fact that nothing at all seemed to be coming back to him from being there, it was like standing in the place someone else had an accident, it was sad, but he felt no personal relation. In his mind he pictured a truck and a car colliding and the car rolling wildly across the road next to which they stood, it made him shiver, if what he had pictured was anything what he had just imagined he was lucky to be alive. ”This is useless.” he said as he unbuttoned his trench coat, it was starting to get a little too warm for him and soon he had slipped it off his arms and set it down on the roof of Ava’s car carefully. ”Why weren’t you with me?” he asked, relieved that she wasn’t though still curious why not.

They both sat there in silence for a few minutes before Kyle broke it again to thank her for coming with him. Ava just nodded and gave him a small encouraging smile before watching him climb out of the car and taking a deep breath following his lead. She leaned over the car her arms on top of it as she watched him take in his surroundings slowly. If she had to guess by the way he was acting it wasn’t working, nothing so far had any effect on him, or made him do a double take. Maybe the idea was exactly what she had thought it would be, crazy, and useless. Kyle turned around to face her and asked if he was driving and she sighed pushing herself off the car.
“No. You weren’t the one driving.” She told him honestly as she walked past him a few more steps and down into the brush to where the paramedics had found Kyle lying after the accident. Ava remembered kneeling in that same spot in her prom dress as they carried him away to the ambulance, the totaled truck nothing but scenery in the background as everything else seemed to turn black. That same prom dress hung in plastic in her closet back home still. She couldn’t sell it, and she couldn’t bring herself to trash it either but keeping it around the dorm would have been something she didn’t need to see every day digging through her clothes.
Ava turned her head back up towards Kyle after he placed his coat on the car and looked back towards her. Frustration was raging in his voice and she felt like there was something she should be doing to help him but it wasn’t about her and he would be the only one who could make himself remember. The next question is something that hit her hard, it was something she for a long time hadn’t been able to let go of. She could have been in that car, she could have been with them, she could have been dead or laying right there beside him in the hospital. “I wasn’t with you. You were in a two door BMW and the backseat was much too small for me and my dress so I drove myself separately.” Turning around she took a seat on the ground where it started a slight decline and wrapped her arms around her knees as she too studied the area carefully wondering if you could still see the tire tracks on the pavement just up the road, or the indent where the truck had peeled bark off of a tree. “This is where they found you.”

[/blockquote] Kyle’s heart sank when he saw the expression on Ava’s face, the sadness having to relive that night was causing her was obvious and Kyle had no idea how he was going to protect her yet at the same time find out what he wanted and needed to know. If he wasn’t the one driving, it meant someone else had been in the car with him, two people actually, since he was sitting in the back of the car. Why he wasn’t in the same car as Ava was still a mystery to him, if she drove by herself that meant there was more than enough space left in her car for him as well, the only explanation Kyle could think of that made some sense was that he had something planned for Ava and his friend was part of it, maybe they had some loose ends to tie up or something along that line. His eyes darted around the road, he was starting to feel a little nervous from standing there on the side of the road, even though it was relatively quiet and no cars have passed them since stopping there, for some unknown reason Kyle felt very un save and desperately wanted to get himself and Ava as far away from there as he could.
He looked down at the spot Ava indicated, his paranoia growing worse by the second and the fact that this was causing Ava sadness made it even less worth being there. ”Can we just go please? C’mon….” he said, trying to sound calm but his franticness shone through a tad bit. He took Ava’s hand and half pulled her back towards the car but he stopped dead in his tracks when he heard the sound of a truck’s horn blowing in the distance, he looked intently down the road and soon spotted the approaching truck, he let go of Ava’s hand and stood there, his sight fixed on the truck as he felt his heart starting to pound harder and faster against his chest. The fear he felt at that moment was indescribable, he felt paralyzed yet had the over-whelming instinct to run away as fast as he could.
As the truck passed them, Kyle shut his eyes, trying to calm himself and keep his composure, but it didn’t help at all, instead he saw flashes of bright light and the sound of screeching brakes, he saw himself flung through the air like a ragdoll as he was thrown out of a car and he felt a sting in his head as his head hit a rock. He then saw flashes, a man with a trucker hat, a crumbled car in the distance, he heard himself, trying to yell out his friends name but without any luck and he remembered the emotions he went through when he realized he had just lost his friend, his best friend. Once everything came back to him, his eyes show open and he looked around, verifying that what he just saw wasn’t happening at the moment, because it felt so real. ”I-I-I….” he said before sprinting towards Ava’s passenger side and getting in quickly, panting.

It was growing darker around them and Ava felt the heaviness of Kyle’s presence behind her turning again to look up at him, the discomfort on his face obvious. For reason’s she was un aware of he was begging her to leave, the panic in his voice concerning her as he reached out his nearly shaking hand for hers. “Yeah of course we can go.” Taking his hand she let him help pull her up using her free hand to wipe the debris from her jeans and taking a few steps with him towards the car before stopping when she felt Kyle do the same abruptly. His eyes were stuck on something in the distance, her hand dropped, and she turned to follow his line of vision straight into the coming headlights as the truck honked once more letting them know it was coming.
The truck came and went but Kyle stood frozen in time with his eyes closed. Ava watched him carefully with concern and apprehension, his breathing heavy and fast, as he seemed unaware of anything going on around him. “Kyle?” She called out to him softly not wanting to startle him out of whatever state he was in but he didn’t answer back. Her hand reached out to touch his arm but she pulled it back startled as his eyes flew open and darted around quickly like he was suddenly lost having no idea where he was. He opened his mouth to speak with only one syllable legibly coming out before he made a mad dash in the direction of her car, getting inside before she could even get out two words in his direction.
Her jaw dropped in shock as she watched the scene unfold before her, unsure of exactly what had happened. Ava shook her head in confusion her brows arched and furrowed before walking at her own pace following him back to the car. Pulling on the handle she reopened the door and looked at him sitting there, body stiff, taking a seat in the frame near his feet. “Are you okay?” He was sweating, his eyes full of emotion yet still managing to be blank somehow and she wasn’t really sure he was ready to give her an answer just yet. Reaching in between his feet she pulled her keys out of her purse again before standing again to move around the car and climb into her own side. “I’ll take you home now.”
Most their car rides were quiet but this was even unusual for them. The silence pierced her ears, breaking her heart at the same time and every few minutes when she was in a safe stretch of road near lights or away from any other traffic she would glance over at him to check on him. He hadn’t told her what he saw if anything, but the way he acted told her all she really needed to know and as they pulled back into his driveway she shut off her lights so they didn’t alert his parents of her presence as she put her car into park. “Do you want to come back to the dorms instead so you don’t have to worry about your mom? We can talk?” If she saw him like this she would ask questions, and Kyle generally tended to try and avoid them til he was ready, “Or I can come in with you?” She offered as an alternative.

The image of his friend inside the crumbled up car swam in Kyle’s mind as he sat in the car, waiting for Ava, he needed to get away, as far away as possible. Once she made it inside the car Kyle tried calming himself down, he didn’t want his emotions affecting her, he couldn’t bear causing more pain for he, he wouldn’t. ”Thanks, I’m fine by the way, this place just… It really creeps me out.” he said turning his head to look at her, wanting her to believe that he was ok, wanting her to be ok, but the signs of what he remembered were tears piling up in the bottom of his eyelids, which he wiped away moments before turning his head toward her.
The further they drove from the scene, the less suffocated Kyle started to feel; now he knew why no-one wanted to tell him anything about it. Kyle decided not to talk about it with Ava now though; he wouldn’t be able to talk about it while staying calm at that moment and had promised himself he was never again freaking out in front of her, or anyone for that matter. ”I just need some time alone…” he said whilst staring out window at his house’s front door, ”Please, I’ll call you later… Or I’ll come to the dorms tomorrow.” he added as he looked at her again, touching her cheek softly before pulling his hand back and opening the car door.
As he walked away from Ava he hoped that she didn’t think he was mad at her or something, he just wanted time on his own, to process what he had just seen, the blood, the sounds and the emotions were all too much for him to handle at that moment. Once he reached the door he looked back at Ava once and smiled, half-heartedly, hoping to reassure her that he was fine.
Kyle avoided his parents and snuck up to his room, once he was inside he turned off his light and crawled into the bottom bunk, just after kicking off his shoes. His jacket was still in Ava’s car, that’s if she had put it in before they drove of, otherwise it was probably next to the road and if that was the case, that was where it was going to stay because he would never go back there as long as he lived. Kyle lied awake in his bed for hours, unable to get the images of what he remembered out of his head, it was only the next morning that his body finally gave in and he fell asleep.
