The lightening cracked outside the window and Ava laughed at the way Kyle jumped. She had seen the weather forecast earlier and knew that it was coming so she was a little less surprised than him when it finally arrived. When he admitted to not having talked to his mom she gave him a disapproving look as he picked up the phone again and called her quickly giving her some story about a breakdown and him staying the night. Technically though, he wasn’t lying in a sense. He did have a break down and a drunken one at that so she couldn’t really get onto him for it. Hanging up the phone he rolled back over towards her and covered up again with the blanket but this time not nearly as high. Kyle took to tickling her and she jerked a bit before smacking him as she laughed. “Quit,’’ she snorted. She hated being tickled, it was one of those contradictory things, it made you laugh, it was kinda funny but more or less it was really just annoying. “Come on!” Ava cried with another laugh as she quickly grabbed his hands in her own and held them tight to make him stop til she felt him release his tension and quit trying.
Once she felt confident he wasn’t going to try again Ava let his hands go and closed her eyes laying there silently listening to the storm raging outside. She loved storms, she knew a lot of people didn’t but the sound of rain on the roof and some rolling thunder calmed her like nearly nothing else could. It was exciting in a sort of reserved way. “I love laying here listening to the rain.” A sigh left her lips as she let out a deep breath and smiled again. It was nice, feeling this content and at peace for even just the moment when there hadn’t been a whole lot of it to go around for her lately. Opening her eyes again she traced her finger along lines and curves of Kyle’s stomach as she thought about all the things the doctor wanted her to tell him, the things he still had yet to learn that could hurt him just the same if not worse than she already had. “Did the doctor call with your test results yet?” She asked as she slowed her tracing down and looked up at him. It had almost slipped her mind til she started thinking about the visit the other day, she was sure though if he had gotten them, she would have already known.

Kyle of course didn’t know Ava hated being tickled; her smack barely stung and her laugh gave him almost just as much butterflies in his stomach as a kiss from her did. Once she grabbed hold his hands he decided it was time to stop though and didn’t really fight too much against her, he was surprised at how strong she was though, if he had decided to continue tickling her he would probably have a hard time trying. ”You look even cuter than usual when you laugh…” he said with a bright smile, before covering her with the blanket again and tucking her in slightly along her back. He then lied down again, for the third time and covered himself up to his hips again, this time lying on his back and staring at the ceiling, listening to the sound the rain made as it beat down on the roof.
When Ava mentioned liking the sound of the rain Kyle whispered ”I’ll behave them and try not to ruin it for you.” as he turned his to look at her and winked at her. As soon as her finger touched his stomach he tensed up slightly and watched as she traced his curves, it was not that he didn’t like it, on the contrary, he might’ve liked it a little too much. He looked back into her eyes when she spoke again and decided he was just going to try his best to ignore the sensation she was causing, ”No, haven’t heard anything from him yet… It kind off feels like I just wasted my time there, he’s keeping me in the dark too much, it’s me he tested, and he should be keeping me more up to date.” he said shaking his head slightly before letting out a sigh ”I’m sure he’ll get in touch soon though, he seemed fascinated by something he saw on my CT and even more by my theory about those lips….” he said as he softly touched Ava’s bottom lip before putting his hand back on his hip.
Kyle’s stomach muscles tensed as soon as Ava’s tracing reached his belly button, in a swift quick movement he grabbed the hand doing the tracing, the look in his eyes making the problem obvious ”You will drive me crazy if you keep doing that.” he said with a nervous giggle as he turned onto his back and lifted his arm ”There’s a spot for you here though…. If you’re interested.” he said after taking a deep breath, nodding toward his shoulder.

The frustration in Kyle’s voice was apparent when he told her hadn’t heard from the doctor. She figured if something was wrong they would have called right away so there must have not been anything to worry about. “Making sure you are okay is never a waste of time. You needed to go.” Migraine’s and nosebleeds weren’t a good combination and with the accident she had been extremely afraid of something being terribly wrong when he fessed up to her about them. Taking him to the doctor hadn’t been an option to her and if she used her sway with him for that then it was used properly. His fascination though she smiled as his finger ran across her lip, was probably not her but the memories he had. His sarcasm was terrible.
Ava couldn’t help but laugh as he grabbed her hand and made her stop abruptly obviously not able to take anymore. It wasn’t like she was intending to have that particular effect on him it was almost just like a nervous twitch or something, a thing to do to pass the time and keep herself entertained. Even after a year of being laid up in a bed somewhere his body was still something he could be proud of, a bit of work and he would be right back where he had been before, uh-maze-ing. Kyle lifted his arm and offered her a place in beside him and she scooted in closer to him letting her arm fall over his stomach, hand resting lightly on top, this time leaving her fingers to themselves. His skin was warm as she laid her head down in the curve his arm made, her nose just about buried into his neck. She could smell his cologne, faintly after the shower but there. Fierce from Abercrombie, it had always been her favorite and every time she passed the store she wanted to stand there for a while and just inhale, if a smell could make her crumble this was the one. It was probably even the same bottle she had gotten for him before the accident happened since he really hadn’t had the opportunity to use it. “I got that for you.” She said as she stuck her nose in a little bit closer taking in a good sized sniff before pulling back again and laughing knowing he wouldn’t have had any idea what she was talking about til she did that.
Her eyes studied his face in silence as a few moments passed without any words between them. This is how she wanted to remember them, this was how she did. Ava’s eyes blinked and she smiled again peaceful and content for the time being to just be right there with him. If she hadn’t known better she would have guessed the entire last year hadn’t happened, Eli was nonexistent, her problems as well. She did know better though and eventually she would have to come back to reality but this was her reality for now, and this was where she was staying. Before even realizing she was doing it Ava’s fingers again lingered across his stomach til her hand settled on his chest again and she propped her head up with her other arm. “It’s getting late.” Realizing the time only when she had sat up a bit and caught a glimpse of the clock on the other side of the room. “If you want to go to sleep I can leave you alone. We can talk later.”

Ava reminding him about the importance of him going to the doctor just reminded him of one the reasons he loved her so much, she truly cared about his well being and wouldn’t rest until she got him to go, in other words, her perseverance, though she didn’t really need much with his since he couldn’t say no to her, at all, ever. ”Yeeeeah, I know cheri…” he said shaking his head, he just wished the doctors and hospitals would eventually be something of the past, he was very afraid of something being wrong with him, although he previously said his life sucked, which was sometimes not far from the truth, it didn’t mean he didn’t want to be alive to experience it, he would take the bad to be able to experience the good, like this moment he was having with Ava.
Having Ava so close, like that afternoon on his bed, felt amazing and as he laid there with herself half wrapped around him he found himself happier than he thought a person could be, as if everything that happened prior to this didn’t matter anymore, at least in this moment it didn’t. Eyes turned his head toward Ava when she spoke ”Well thank you then, It’s my favorite too, my bought me something else too, but it made me smell like my dad and I didn’t really want that… Not that he smells bad, it just doesn’t suit me.” he said with a smile, as he took his hand and slowly dragged it through her soft brown hair. ”You’re beautiful, you know that right?” he asked, as he took in all her facial features, hoping to permanently engrave them into his memory.
“Hmmmmph.” Kyle went when her finger moved up to his chest, shifting awkwardly, but only slightly. He looked at her intensely, wondering if she was doing it on purpose, he wasn’t sure. When she mentioned the time he turned his head and looked at the clock, in a few hours he would have to get up to go face the wrath of his mother and sleeping probably was a good idea, but he knew he was going to take forever to fall a sleep. ”I’m not really tired, at all, thanks to…” he said, but didn’t finish his thought, instead he blushed, which gave a good indication of what he was about to say.
Without warning Kyle cupped Ava’s face with his free hand and kissed her, with every movement of his lips it became obvious how he was feeling. It was not long before he started kissing her neck, throat and behind her ears but just before it go any further he pulled back and let out a slight moan, ”Sleep, sleep… Right.” he said before clenching his teeth.

Smelling like his dad wasn’t completely a bad thing, at least he smelled good but she could understand where it was sort of weird anyways. She smiled when he thanked her though as his hand started tousling through her hair. You’re beautiful you know. It was a mere compliment to most, but to her it made things even more difficult lying there beside him to not just pick him and give in. He knew what to say, he knew how to act, he knew who she was, everything was easy with him. Not necessarily routine because that was boring, but the getting to know each other part, learning buttons and triggers, what makes the other tick, and what they loved, everything was done.
Ava had figured he wouldn’t have given in to sleep one way or another. It was a weekend, he didn’t have any obligations except to go home at some point, and staying up with her would have been the best opportunity from his point of view. Looking at him she wondered if this whole thing would end though at some point, the charade that everything was okay, the perfect image they had painted right there of themselves. There was far too much going on in the real world for them to stay here forever, it was at least a moment though, one that could either help her decide or make it harder. Then, there it was.
That kiss again. The kiss she had missed so badly, his hands touching her skin, his eyes closed in concentration and urgency. It wasn’t just one sided though, Kyle was initiating it but she was definitely returning it as she gently pulled him from his place beside her til he was hovering over her. Ava’s hands reached up around his neck and pulled him in closer no longer feeling like she could prevent anything from happening, like she could or wanted to prevent them instead of just letting things happen however they were meant to be. He broke away but not too far as his lips trailed down her neck and behind her ear requiring every ounce of restraint she had in her. He pulled back again though mentioning sleep and she closed her eyes in an almost sad disappointment to lose that moment, that connection with him. Looking up at him again she lifted her head from the bed and laid one last kiss on him and smiled, “Alright. Bedtime it is.”

Stopping took every bit of will Kyle had, he didn’t want to stop, he wanted to feel her lips against his, feel her soft skin, but he just couldn’t, not with things still so messed up between them, not without her making the decision she had to make, he wouldn’t and couldn’t play second string to someone else... It would drive him crazy. ”I hate sleeping; I’ve done it enough for a lifetime.” he said as he got back under the blanket and made sure Ava was properly covered, ”But at least you’re here…” he added once he was lying down in a comfortable position on his side, facing Ava.
He laid there silently for a few minutes, simply just staring at her, something he’s been doing a lot lately, waiting for his heart to stop racing and his body to relax before he spoke again, ”Good night, sweet dreams.” he then said with a half smile before kissing her once more, gently, but still filled with emotion, he hoped she still remembered he loved her, despite his stupid actions and despite the fact that she couldn’t make up her mind.
Tiredness kicked in as soon as Kyle’s head hit the pillow, only then did he feel the effect the alcohol had on his system, and it didn’t feel good at all. He moved closer to Ava and put his arm around her, slowly shut his eyes and before he knew it he was asleep.
The storm lasted right through the night, but by the time Kyle awoke it had at least stopped raining, he had no idea what it looked like outside though, whether it was still gloomy or not was beyond him. He didn’t wake Ava, who was still asleep in him arms, instead he watched her as she slept, he loved how peaceful she looked, like nothing was bothering her at that moment, as if she was lost in happy dreams, he couldn’t bare bringing her back to reality.

Ava understood where he was coming from to some extent. He had been gone for so long, sleeping if that was what you wanted to call it that it seemed like doing anything like that now was just a waste of more time. He was still human though, and without adverse effects he couldn’t just not sleep, he needed at least a few hours. She could tell he was caving though as he covered her again with the blankets and readjusted himself in bed beside her. He stared at her , and she at him til she couldn’t handle it no more and her face broke out into a smile and a laugh. She returned his kiss after he bid her a goodnight and closed her eyes more exhausted from her day then she had previously realized. Rolling over she felt Kyle wrap his arms around her tightly and fell quickly into a deep sleep without even letting another thought about anything cross her mind first.
The morning seemed to come to fast as Ava’s eyes slowly opened a little, she closed them again sighing deeply before opening them again to see Kyle still lying beside her in the bed watching her. “You creep.” She said smiling and rubbing her eyes. “How long have you been awake watching me sleep?” She pushed the covers back with her feet laying there for a minute trying to make herself get out of the bed before actually doing so. Pushing herself up on the mattress she looked around the room and to the time on the clock deciding she wasn’t really hungry enough for breakfast and just wanted something to drink.
Instead of crawling over Kyle, Ava crawled out the bottom of the bed making a quick trip to the bathroom before returning and pouring herself a glass of orange juice from the fridge. “Did you want something to drink or eat?” She hadn’t even considered when she decided against breakfast that he might be hungry, but the way he talked last night his plans had been to leave first thing to go home and face his mom.

Kyle chuckled when she called him a creep, yes it was kind of creepy having someone staring at you while you sleep, but he knew she was joking, or at least he hope she was. ”Not too long, just about ten minutes or so… I didn’t have the heart to wake you.” he said as he watched her get out of bed, wishing that they didn’t have to, but knowing that he had to face reality sometimes and reality was that everything wasn’t even close to as perfect as last night was, he had to face his mom and he had to tell Ava that she needed to make her decision, that he couldn’t stay in her life if he knew that he wasn’t the one, her only one.
A few seconds after Ava got out of bed, Kyle did the same, standing next to it awkwardly, not sure what to do. ”I’m not hungry thanks…” he replied to her question as he walked to the fridge she just put the orange juice in, ”I’ll just get some juice.” he said before proceeding to help himself to some, putting everything back in their place once he was done. He then downed the glass of orange juice and put the glass down on the nearest flat surface.
”I should probably go put my stinky clothes back on, my mom’s going to freak out when I smell like a bar, but rather that than going home half naked.” he said, smiling, he wasn’t really afraid of what his mom was going to do or say, that was the least of his problems. He walked back to the bed and sat down on the edge of it, before he spoke again, he didn’t look forward to this, telling her to choose was both to be expected and selfish, but he just couldn’t handle waiting anymore. ”We need to talk…” he said, his tone of voice serious and his heart pounding. He was nervous about how she might react, best case, she’d choose him and they could start rebuilding their fragile relationship, or worst case, she would choose the other guy, who’s name Kyle still didn’t know and wasn’t really interested in knowing either.
Once Ava sat down next to him, he tried to think of the best way of asking her, he didn’t want to be pushy, but he didn’t want her to be able to avoid his question either, so he would have to make it clear too, ”I need you to make a decision Ava, about us, I can’t keep trying to pretend that he doesn’t bother me, I didn’t do a great job with that anyway.” he started saying, not pausing for a reaction at all ”It’s either me, or it isn’t, I didn’t want to push you and I know I’m being selfish, but I just can’t take it anymore… I don’t want to hang around to have my heart broken; I’d rather have it over and done with soon if it has to happen.”
Kyle’s last words showed his lack of confidence that her choice would be him; he used to be a bit surer, but that all went out of the window when he saw them together the previous night. ”What’s it going to be? It’s either all of me or nothing, friendship isn’t an option, and I’ll never be able to be your friend, even if I wanted to… It’ll just, it’ll never work.” was the last thing he said before he fell silent and waited for her to say something, bracing himself for the worst.

Ava gave him a glass of juice and when she was done with hers picked up a little bit around the room waiting for him to finish as well. She didn’t have any plans for the day but after Kyle left figured she would get dressed and figure out if she was just going to hang around there or go back into town and find something to do. He set his glass back down and she took care of it then put it away as he told her he was going to go change. Nodding absent mindedly as she picked up her homework off the desk putting it back into her bag and ready for the following morning. She was caught off guard when he hadn’t went back to the bathroom and was actually on her bed telling her they needed to talk.
Not sure what he wanted to talk about Ava zipped the book bag shut and made her way across the room taking a seat on her bed next to him studying his face. It wasn’t hard to tell something was bothering him but she couldn’t have ever guessed as he began explaining. Her face went from something of content and thoughtfulness to surprise almost immediately. Telling her to choose was useless, it couldn’t be done. If she had any idea how she wanted things to be, or who she wanted for that matter the choice would have already been made. It wasn’t fair to leave him hanging on though, she understood that, getting yanked around emotionally by a string had to be not only hard but embarrassing.
Ava reached her hands up to her face rubbing them over her eyes several times before dropping them again and looking at him with sadness and disdain. It didn’t matter how he begged her, what he said, she just wasn’t ready to make that choice. “I’m sorry Kyle I can’t yet.” Her words had to hurt him and she hated to do it again. It killed her on the inside so much so that she had to choke out the words to force herself to tell him. She pushed herself off the bed and to the floor til she was kneeling in front of him and crawled up into the space between his legs getting closer to him. “I’m not ready yet. I can’t explain it.” Her eyes moved up to look at him pleading even though she would never say the words. “I understand if you want to leave, if we can’t be friends and you want nothing to do with me. I get that. I don’t like it, I don’t want to lose you again so fast. But I get it.”
Her head dropped again as Ava rested her elbows on his knees and held it in her hands wondering what she had done to deserve everything that was happening. Had she been that terrible, had she done something so awful that things couldn’t possibly just go her way for even one small moment in time. It didn’t matter whether she understood him or not, losing him all over again this time by her own fault didn’t seem like it was a good enough reason. She wanted to break down right there and cry to beg him not to do this to her, but she couldn’t do that to him. He shouldn’t have to feel guilty for any of it, he had a right to live his life, she on the other hand would just have to deal with whatever happened.

Kyle’s eyes started to tear up as Ava responded, he tried preparing himself for all possibilities, sure she didn’t choose the other guy over him, but it was just as good as that and even with the mental preparation he wasn’t strong enough to handle it. He knew what he had to do now, he had to leave, and he had to try as hard as he could to get over her and that meant he would never see her again after this. He hated the thought, he didn’t want to loose her, but he was convinced that it would be the best thing for him to do, he couldn’t spend the rest of his second-chance at life on a emotional rollercoaster with no end in sight.
When she took his hands he stood up, pulling her to her feet as he did, ”I’m sorry… But I need to go… I can’t… Not anymore.” he barely made sense as he tried tying all his thoughts into once sentence, fighting back his tears, but not exactly succeeding since they started to roll down his cheeks slowly. He sighed, kissed her softly on her forehead, before letting go of her hands, picking up his phone next to the bed and walking into the bathroom where his clothes were, getting dressed as fast as he could, the smell of tequila and cigarettes clung to his clothes but he didn’t care, he felt empty, drained, like a zombie.
Once he was dressed he walked out of the bathroom and straight to the door, ignoring Ava as best he could, if he stayed any longer, had to be around her a second longer he wouldn’t be able to leave. He opened the door and walked out of the dorm, ”I still love you…” he choked out before closing the door behind him.
As Kyle walked down the street in the direction of his house, he felt nothing but pain, his head hurt, his heart hurt. He didn’t think at all, he just kept walking, as if he was in a hypnotized state, with tears running down his face. It took him about thirty minutes to get home, when he got inside he had already dried off his tears, he didn’t want his mother to know, he didn’t want to talk about it, he didn’t want to talk about anything. He ran into his mom just as he made it to the top of the stairs, she had a towel around her, so it was obvious that she had just gotten out of the shower. ”Kyle! Go to your room, I’ll be right there, last night was unacceptable!” she said loudly, her anger and disappointment seemed to ooze out of every word. ”I just need to get dressed first too, but I’ll be there.” he said with no emotion in his voice whatsoever.
Kyle did as he said he was going to, he got dressed, put his clothes in the laundry basket, put on some cologne, not what Ava got him, but the new bottle his mother bought him a few days ago, then sat on his bed waiting for his mom. She came in about five minutes later and Kyle looked at her as she warned him that if he ever pulled something like that again he would never set foot outside of their house again, Kyle didn’t say anything, he just nodded, not feeling anything other than the burning sensation inside his chest and the severe pain in his skull. Kyle’s nods seemed to be enough for his mom though and she left immediately after, leaving him sitting there, staring into space.
