The days after Kyle’s operation dragged by slowly and boringly, Ava spent a lot of time with Kyle, after school and during weekends but whenever she wasn’t there he felt like he was going crazy. He never left his bed for anything other than going to the bathroom and his muscles started to become weak from not using them often enough. On the seventh day of bed rest the doctor did a house call, to check up on Kyle and removed his bandages, the cut wasn’t completely healed yet but the doctor said it shouldn’t cause any complications if they took the bandage of, which was really starting to irritate Kyle, the pain Kyle had was almost completely gone, with the exception of a few minor headaches every now and then. It took one more week before Kyle was finally back on his feet and out of bed. The time him and Ava spent together over the two weeks was filled with her homework, a number of board games and a lot of music, they didn’t talk about anything that happened before the operation, but Kyle was sure that they would have to eventually, he just didn’t know when.
Kyle’s first day out of bed started as soon as the sun came up, he got up, took a shower and got dressed as quickly as his weak legs would allow and went down stairs, where he found his mom in the kitchen, preparing breakfast for his dad, who would be going to work very soon. ”Good morning honey.” his mom greeted with a smile as she approached Kyle and dragged her finger across the long half-circle scar on the side of his shaved head. Kyle barely recognized himself after they took the bandages off, but got used to the idea of not having hair for a while. ”Good morning mom…” he said, smiling a bit since the area around the scar was very sensitive and ticklish. “Sorry… It just looks so….” his mom started saying quickly pulling her hand away ”Freaky, I know…” Kyle finished her sentence for her pulling his hand over his short prickly hair.
Ava hadn’t seen Kyle’s head yet, he was sure to wear a wool cap whenever she was around, he was sure it raised her suspicions, but she never asked anything about it, probably because she didn’t want him to feel uncomfortable. Today was not to be any different and as soon as he let his hand fall to his side he took a grey wool cap, which matched the grey trench coat he was wearing, off the kitchen cupboard next to him and pulled it over his head. ”Heading out already?” his mom asked, her expression worried, ”Yes, but I’ll be fine, I’ll be with Ava.” he replied and once Ava’s name was mentioned his mom seemed to be much less worried, probably because she believed Ava wouldn’t let anything happen to him.
While Kyle waited for Ava to pick him up, he sat down at the table and ate some of the scrambled eggs and bacon his mom had made for breakfast, his eyes darting up in the direction of the living room door every few seconds, anticipating Ava’s arrival. He felt guilty for taking up all her time over weekends and during the week, but decided now that he was well enough to go out that he would let her decide whether or not she still wanted to hang out with him, he was not going to force her into anything.

Bed rest for Kyle had been just as boring for Ava as it had been for him over the days since his surgery. It wasn't his fault that they had locked him up inside his house and she understood exactly why he needed it but days on end laying around doing nothing was excruciating. She hadn't spent every day there, she had school among other things to take care of, and although they were both making an honest attempt the awkwardness between them was still noticeable.
Today though would be his first day of freedom and Ava was getting ready to go break him out of jail. She had promised him less then twenty four hours after being home when they let him go she would come get him and they would go do something. She still wasn't sure where they would go yet. He couldn't exactly take himself anywhere, and there weren't a whole lot of other people he knew who would do so. Pulling her sweater on over her head she replaced the ring he had given her on her right hand making sure to give herself a once over in the mirror before grabbing her keys and making a b line for the parking lot.
Knocking on the front door Ava carefully let herself in. It had gotten at least that comfortable over her visits that it was useless for them to open the door every time she showed up. It still felt weird to her being back in their home, allowing herself in, just being around them that much. She had gotten used to her new life, without him, things now were just confusing but she had learned to let it go now. Whatever happened was bound to and she couldn't control it no matter how she wanted to.
"I smell bacon. Ava said as she came around the corner into the kitchen finding Kyle sitting at the table just about to finish his breakfast. She had eaten before coming over but the smell was overwhelming, she didn't doubt had she tried she could have smelled it before even entering the house. "You ready to go?

The sound of the front door opening made Kyle once again look up, this time toward the entrance of the kitchen where Ava was sure to appear at any second. He listened to her footsteps, nine of them to be exact then smiled as brightly as the sun when she came into view ¨Hey gorgeous.¨ he said as he got up, his gentleman-ways kicking in as soon as she entered the kitchen, not remotely worried about being too flirtatious, he wasn't going to hide his feeling for her or what he thought, but he was also not going to put any pressure on her either, he was just going to do what came naturally and gorgeous was the first word that popped into his head when he saw her. ¨Good morning dear, have some breakfast if you want, there¡¦s more than enough.¨ Kyle's mother offered as she took an empty plate and put it down in front of the seat next to Kyle's.
Kyle didn't answer her question about being ready, since he knew she could probably see he was still busy stuffing his face with the food that was laid out in front of him on the kitchen table instead he looked at Ava in awe, her beauty always seemed to amaze him, even after seeing her so often, it never became less striking to him. Kyle's feelings for Ava was made obvious by the way he looked at her, he had a glint in his eye that only came from being in her presence. Once Ava sat down Kyle did the same before taking another bite of bacon, ¨We're finally getting to go out, what do you feel like doing?¨ he asked after swallowing, turning his head slightly to look her in the eye. His mom left the kitchen shortly after his question to go wake up his dad, which left the two of them alone to deliberate their plans for the day ¨We could go see a movie, hang out somewhere or if you feel like an adrenaline rush you can attempt teaching me how to drive, Kati, a friend of mine managed pretty well, but I still need a lot of practice.¨
Once Kyle finished his food, he pushed his place forward a bit before standing up, wiping his mouth with a napkin as he did so. Once he was done he walked over to the small trashcan in the corner of the kitchen threw away his napkin, then took his empty plate and put it into their empty dishwasher.

Taking a seat Ava pushed the plate aside but grabbed a piece of bacon carefully munching on it while Kyle finished his own breakfast. "Slow down. I don't think I am quite ready to take you driving. Whoever this Kati is has more guts then I do." She wasn't ready to put her car in that compromising position. It wasn't that she was afraid of him not being able to drive but it was a fact he didn't remember much, and she hadn't personally seen his last practice run so that was definitely a no go.
Kyle removed himself from the table and threw away his napkin before putting his plate away. Standing from the table she grabbed her bag again meeting him near the hall and walking towards the front door. "If you are ready to go this time I was thinking we could start with a movie." She waited for a reply before thanking his mother for her breakfast offer and leading him outside to the car that was waiting for them.
Luckily for Kyle the sun was shining and it was beautiful on his first day of freedom. It was supposed to rain that afternoon or evening but it didn't matter for the time being. "How's it feel? Being out I mean."She looked across to the passenger side where he sat looking out the window. He was wearing that damn gray hat again and it was starting to drive her insane. He had worn it every day she had seen him since the surgery and she wondered if he was embarrassed of his scar or trying to save her seeing it.

Kyle chuckled at Ava¡¦s reaction to his suggestion of teaching him how to drive, ¡¨We used my car, but yes, she¡¦s very brave.¡¨ he said with a smile, shaking his head slightly. Driving was fun for him, but never the less scary, he didn¡¦t like being in control of such a deadly thing. Once Kyle cleaned up after himself he leaned against the kitchen counter and stood there, lost in thought for a second but soon snapped back when Ava spoke again ¡¨Sounds good, your pick, as long as you don¡¦t make me watch a musical.¡¨ he said as he stood up straight again and dust off his coat, it wasn¡¦t really cold enough for a coat, but he knew that it was probably going to rain later so he had to go prepared.
Kyle followed her out to the car, shamelessly checking her out as she walked ahead of him, but it was not long before he began feeling guilty and uncomfortable for the thoughts he were having. He opened her door for her before getting into the passenger seat and closing the door carefully. ¡¨Freedom is sweet¡K¡¨ he replied simply to her question, giving her a little wink, unable to withhold his flirtatiousness, for some reason he was in a really good mood and that seemed to turn him into a real smooth-operator ¡¨Did I mention that you look especially pretty today?¡¨ he asked rhetorically with a devious smile, thing were still a bit awkward between them, but he wasn¡¦t going to let that stop him from speaking his mind.
The drive to the cinema didn¡¦t take too long and there wasn¡¦t much speaking from either them, it seemed to be a tradition of theirs not to speak when Ava was driving, not that she couldn¡¦t do both at the same time, Kyle just took the time to think, about everything and do a bit of daydreaming, which he had gotten a knack for over the past two weeks. Once the car was parked and locked the two of them made their way into the cinema, the line for the tickets wasn¡¦t long, but that was to be expected since it was so early. ¡¨May I?¡¨ he asked, offering her his arm, he would¡¦ve taken her hand, but he didn¡¦t think that would go down all too well with her.
¡¨Soooo¡K. What are we watching?¡¨ he asked as he looked up at the posters of all the films that were currently showing, and then back to Ava with a quizzical frown. Everything showing seemed alright, he didn¡¦t really know what he¡¦d be into. Words: 435 Notes: ƒº Finally done! Outfit: HERE

Matinee's were Ava's thing and looking around the theater there was no question why. There was one couple ahead of them, no one behind them, and as far as the eye could see emptiness. Likely they would have the entire theater just about to themselves. Kyle offered his arm while they waited and she stared for a moment before finally taking it as the line moved forward and she studied the movie posters intently trying to make a quick decision. There honestly wasn't a whole lot playing she was even interested in seeing so it wasn't a touch choice, Limitless or the Adjustment Bureau. Limitless was newer though so she figured she had plenty of time to see it and decided on the other. "The Adjustment Bureau looks pretty good," she replied with a smile.
Kyle ordered the tickets and they made their way through the line over to concessions where three people stood around laughing and talking until they noticed their presence. It always was amusing that they kept so many people working during such a down time but luckily for them it made the job fun anyways. Ava ordered some Raisinets and a small pepsi then waited for Kyle as well before they made their way back down the halls to find their theater. "I think it's this one right here." She said looking at the number above the door and the sign to the right waiting for the movie title to scroll by before actually stepping inside.
Ava let go of Kyle's arm and made her way up the first few stairs before turning around to make sure he was following her. The previews had started and it was dark so she had to follow the lights in the floor up the steps til they reached about three quarters of the way up. Sliding in between the cushioned seats she went half way over and set her cup in a holder before pushing the seat down and sitting on it quickly so it didn't pop back up.

As soon as Kyle paid for the tickets her let Ava walk ahead of him, he wasn¡¦t really sure where to go from there, he opted for some popcorn and sprite as snack, since chocolate covered raisins didn¡¦t seem very appealing to him. Once the snacks were paid for he followed Ava into the theatre, careful not to fall down the stairs, which even with the floor lights were hard to see, he followed Ava¡¦s example and adjusted his seat before sitting down, he gave Ava a sideways glance before focusing on the screen, fortunately for them they had already missed most of the previews. The movie was the perfect balance between romance and action and almost had Kyle in tears numerous times.
As soon as the titles came up, Kyle stood up and headed toward the exit, there was no one else in the theatre except for them so it didn¡¦t take as long to get out as it would¡¦ve with a theatre full of people/ Kyle kept quiet all the way as they made their way out, thinking about the movie and about how it had effected his emotions, hoping that the few tears he shed didn¡¦t make Ava think any less of him, ¡¨That was pretty awesome.¡¨ he said as he looked at her, just as they left the cinema whilst scratching around his scar, through the dense wool of the cap he was wearing.
Over the past two weeks Kyle hadn¡¦t stopped to think about Eli for a second, but for some reason he did now and wondered whether Ava still had time to see him, since she spent most of her free time entertaining his while he recovered. He felt bad for making her choose in the first place, he didn¡¦t understand the feelings she had for him and him putting her on the spot like that just wasn¡¦t right, he also felt sorry for the guy, since he probably never thought that Kyle would be back in the picture, that¡¦s if he even knew about him.¡¨We¡¦ll eventually have to talk about it you know.¡¨ Kyle said randomly, but knew Ava would know exactly what he was talking about ¡¨When you¡¦re ready.¡¨ he added, not wanting to pressure her again.
The two of them walked toward the entrance of the mall when Kyle¡¦s eye caught sight of a restaurant¡¦s advertisement on milkshakes, ¡¨I can do with a chocolate milkshake right about now, how ¡¥bout you? You game?¡¨ he then asked Ava, eyes focus and eyebrows raised slightly in question, gesturing towards the advertisement with his left hand.

The movie had not disappointed that was for sure, she agreed with Kyle but it was a thinker. Ava followed him back down the stairs that now had a bit more light illuminating off of them to allow for easier exit of the theater. The whole idea of fate and who you were or weren’t supposed to be with was an obvious hit home and part of her wondered If they shouldn’t have went to see something else. She had been doing pretty good about just letting things happen the way they fell and now her mind was put right back into full swing dwelling over the decision she still hadn’t been able to bring herself to make. Kyle too had obviously thought something about it because he told her rather out of the blue that eventually it was something they would need to talk about.
"There is nothing to talk about." Her shoulders shrugged as Ava gave him a generic reply stopping her feet for a second and looking at the floor trying to find something to add and looking up when she did. "At least not until the situation has changed." She still hadn’t told Kyle that she had walked out of Eli’s house after getting the phone call from his mom and the ultimatum he had given her. The truth is it wouldn’t have mattered, once things had calmed down he had called her to apologize. They weren’t officially back together per say but she had seen him since then and he was trying to respect her decisions though at times it was highly obvious he was upset with them.
Perfect timing and welcome was the change of subject from Kyle to the simplicities of a chocolate milkshake and she nodded leading him inside and taking a booth in a corner. The waitress left them with a few menu’s and promised she would be back in a few for their orders before disappearing to the back of the restaurant again behind a large red door. "I want a cherry milkshake though, with an order of fries and ketchup. But that’s it." A strange order but she wasn’t hungry enough to eat some big meal. A milkshake and fries sounded like the perfect compromise instead. "Was there anything you wanted to do after this?" Being locked up inside a house for so long she had assumed there would be somewhere he wanted to go but then again she could be wrong. He didn’t exactly have many memories that would point him in a certain direction and she was sure there wasn’t many places he had been since waking up, but she could be wrong about that too. If he had somewhere that would make her job a little easier otherwise she had until they were finished to figure it out.

Nothing to talk about? Kyle repeated in his head in disbelieve, there was loads to talk about, but Kyle decided not to push it since pushing it landed him in one hot mess the last time, he knew she'd eventually want to talk about it and until then he would just be there for her, as her friend, well as much of just a friend he could be for her, since his attraction towards her and the feeling he had for her were bound to cause him to say and maybe even do things that isn't entirely friend like. ¨Well, until then, I'm here.¨ he said quickly, just before they entered the restaurant and sat down, he wanted to make it clear that it was going to be different this time, that he wasn't going to leave again, no, this time he wasn't going to give so quickly.
Since Kyle had breakfast just before they came to the mall he wasn't really all that hungry, but something to snack on didn't sound like a bad idea once Ava mentioned it ¨I think I'm going the chilli-cheese fries route.¨ he said after looking at the menu for less than a minute, everything else on the menu seemed too much to classify as a snack. He barely finished his sentence when he saw the waitress coming back onto the floor, whom he flagged down. ¨This outrageously beautiful woman over here would like some fries with catch up and a cherry milkshake please.¨ he ordered for Ava once the waitress reached them, who smiled as she wrote down what Kyle had just said, obviously amused by his honestly and forwardness ¨And what can I get for you sir?¨ she asked once she had Ava order down and Kyle chuckled in response to being called sir, but didn't say anything about it, it didn't really bother his much ¨Some chili-cheese fries and a chocolate milkshake please.¨ he answered as he put his menu down on the corner of the table for her to take. Once she had Kyle's order down she took both their menu's and set off toward the kitchen to get their orders.
¨I didn't really make any plans, I'm just going to go with the flow and you're welcome to join me if you don't have any plans.¨ he answered Ava's question, only then realizing that having some kind of plan might've been better, but he was so excited about actually getting to go out that he didn't think of making any. Kyle then sat there silently, going through the last couple of days through his head, ¨You know there was something I wanted to ask you about.¨ he said once he thought of the weird words she had exchanged with his doctor at the hospital, ¨What were you and the doctor talking about that day in the hospital? He said something about you leaving it until I'm better. Well I'm better now, so you can tell me.¨

The question Kyle posed about her meeting with the doctor was unexpected but brilliantly interrupted for the moment as their fries and milkshakes arrived. Ava smiled politely at the waitress and buried her eyes into her milkshake as she took an extremely long drink of it before looking back up at him again, her hands between her knees in anticipation. "When you went in to see him after remembering our past relationship he had some crazy idea." Taking the ketchup she made herself a small pile in the corner of the basket and dipped a fry in covering it from tip to top before eating it in between her attempt at an explanation. "He had asked me to take you to another place that might trigger something, more memories. To where the accident happened."
Up until now Ava hadn’t told him because she wasn’t sure if it was such a great idea. Although she wanted him to remember there was so much emotion held in that one night, things he didn’t even know yet had happened besides his coma. Two people had died that night, some of their closest friends. Making him remember that night would be forcing him to deal with their deaths and she wasn’t sure whether or not he was ready for that. It had crossed her mind, several times, if for no other reason than to make Kyle realize how lucky he truly was. The consequences though might be too much. "We don’t have to go, ever. But at the hospital he was telling me to wait at least til you were better, the surgery had already taken it’s own toll on you. Going through another episode like that could be more harm than help."
The mood had suddenly gone from a fun care free day to something a bit more serious and dark. Timing hadn’t been perfect but Kyle knew now and Ava would leave it up to him when and if he even wanted to go. She would take him when he was ready and until then the doctor could wait on the results from his little experiment. The waitress placed their check on their table but their food and milkshakes had barely been touched yet, she was working on hers slowly as more of a distraction then actual nourishment. ”In other more exciting news. It is officially spring and only a few months from graduation. She offered as a lame attempt to lighten the mood again and maybe stray from the subject til they were both ready to talk about it, mainly Kyle.

Kyle frowned a bit when Ava seemed to be postponing whatever it was she needed to tell him about what she and the doctor were talking about, which made him both nervous and suspicious. He followed Ava’s example and drank some of his milkshake, waiting for her answer whilst keeping his eyes on her, it was hard to concentrate when he was around her, since he constantly got sidetracked by her beauty and often almost forgot what they were talking about. Once Ava started talking he stopped drinking and figuratively drooling and looked at her intently, his interest sparked when she mentioned it being a crazy idea and he titled his head slightly as she continued to speak ”I thought about going, but, I’m not sure where exactly it happened… My mom just gave me the name of the road... I just – yeah.” he said shortly after she finished her sentence. He was about to tell her the real truth about why he never went, but decided not to since he wasn’t about to admit he was afraid.
Kyle wasn’t sure that going to the scene of the accident would even trigger any of his memories, he just knew in his gut that if it did, whatever he would remember wasn’t going to be pleasant at all ”My mom won’t tell me much about the accident, every time I bring it up she changes the subject.” he said as he thought about her statement about them never having to go, he would have to face it immediately and he knew the only way he would know what happened is if he remembered it, something told him that no one was ever going to give him any answers, that whatever happened entailed much more than he could imagine. A million questions seemed to start flooding Kyle’s mind, there was so much he wanted to know, but he wasn’t sure if anyone could or would answer him, he would just have to wait for it to come back. As Kyle thought about it, he ate most of the fries he had ordered; too lost in thought for the burn it caused to bother him.
It wasn’t too long before Ava tried changing the subject, whatever happened in that accident must’ve been bad since no one wanted to talk about it with him. What were they afraid of? Hurting his feelings? Probably. ”I want to go there…” Kyle decided out loud, looking down at his plate of fries ”As soon as possible.” he added as he looked back at Ava, the fact that he had made his final decision clear by the seriousness in his tone of voice. He didn’t completely ignore Ava’s statement about spring and school though ”Spring break, that should be awesome… You have any ass-kicking plans for that?” he asked sounding a bit excited for her part with a big bright smile. ”Graduation means prom too, have you gotten a dress yet? I’m more than willing to be your shopping buddy.” he added shortly after. Words: +/- 500

That would have been her next question if she had decided to continue the subject, what had his mother told him. Ava was rather surprised though when he told her nothing had been discussed. She had thought they would have told him at least part of it, but she supposed any piece of it would lead to other questions, then leading to the deaths, something no one really wanted to have to be the one to give him the news. The other thing that shocked her was his need to go there immediately. Now that he knew someone wanted to take him, someone would discuss it with him he wanted the answers he had been looking for since he woke up. Ava just needed to prepare herself to be the one to give it to him.
“No dress yet. But when I decide to go I will let you know.” Ava told him. Whether or not she was even going was still up in the air. The confusion and such between the two guys it would probably just be easier to skip it all together and save the money for something else, but she still had plenty of time to figure that out. It wasn’t the first thing on her mind at the moment, nor the most important. “I had thought about going home for spring break but it doesn’t seem nearly long enough. I would rather go back this summer so I think I am just hanging out here at the dorms.”
The plate of fries seemed endless by this point and Ava felt like she had gone through more than her share pushing it aside to signal she was done with it. Her milkshake though was completely gone only the straw hanging over the side of the glass left to show that there had even been anything in it. “Have you thought about if you wanted to finish school eventually? I can’t imagine they would make you completely redo the year so it would be pretty easy to do if you looked into it.” He had been so close to graduation when the accident happened it would be a shame if he just let it go. She understood completely why he wouldn’t go back now, even only half of a semester with everything going on would be hard to concentrate on but she had wondered if it ever even crossed his mind to do so. She would be graduating this year, and her university plans were still up in the air as well even though she had received several acceptances already. Her head wasn’t in making a decision yet and she wasn’t going to rush it til she had to.

Ava said nothing else about the accident or going to it’s scene, so Kyle figured she didn’t object to going there, the sooner he could put that part of his past behind him, the better, and having her there would probably help a lot too, he just didn’t want to see him too vulnerable so a huge part of him didn’t want to remember any of it, not with her there but another part of him wanted her there when he did too, her presence always seemed to calm him considerably. ”Ooooo, shopping!” Kyle said in a good impersonation of a stereotypical gay voice paired with spirit fingers and a huge smile, despite the morbid topic of his accident he wasn’t about to let it ruin his good mood just yet ”But you could go in a rag and sandals and still be the prettiest girl there, so you don’t need to worry about the dress too much.” he added shortly after, meaning every word despite how corny it sounded. He didn’t even think about who her date would be and he wasn’t going to worry about it either, whatever was meant to be would work out perfectly, or so he decided to think at least. ”I can always ask my mom if we can use their beach house in LA for a weekend or so, sun, surf… Damn that sounds good.” he offered, once again not thinking about whether she and Eli had made any plans and he knew if they did she wouldn’t tell him unless she had to. The bad weather since waking up from his coma has been working on Kyle’s nerves for quite a while now; he longed to be re-familiarized with the feeling of sunlight against his skin.
Kyle finished off the rest of his fries and lulled the burning sensation with the rest of his chocolate milk before pushing his plate and glass aside next to Ava’s, it wasn’t long before the waiter came around to fetch it and asked if they wanted anything else, Kyle declined with a small smile and asked for the bill, since the fact that Ava didn’t finish her fries was enough indication that she didn’t want anything else. ”I want to graduate, according to my mom I can take the exams with these year’s seniors and attend the last few classes with them, but she’s worried that I won’t be able to get all the work in my head before then.” Kyle answered as he waited for the waitress to return with their bill, he really would love being able to go to college next year but he had no idea what he would study, if he was even able to pass the senior exams. ”I might go back to school on Monday; my mom said it’s up to me.” he added a couple of seconds later with a bit of a frown, he wasn’t sure what to do yet and there wasn’t much time for him to make his decision.
It took only a couple of minutes before the waitress reached them with the bill, which Kyle paid with a more than reasonable tip before getting up from his seat and standing next to Ava ”Now is as good as time as any, you up for a little trip down, I-have-no-memory lane?” he joked half heartedly with a hint of a smile curving his lips, the truth was that he was a little nervous about going, but knew that postponing it would probably not do any good.
