With much coaxing from Damien, Dionysus forced herself to get out of the house today. Instead of putting on more pajamas when she got out the shower this morning, she put on a dress that Israel had brought during a three day layover in Los Angeles while they were waiting out a hurricane in the Pacific on their way to Japan. She loved that dress and he had loved her in it. Then instead of pulling her hair into a messy bun, Di had taken the time to style her brunette locks into a modern updo. She did her makeup, put gold hoops in her ears, and placed a butterfly bracelet around her wrist. She grabbed her oversized pink purse and placed all her belongs and her beloved camera inside. Slipping on her jeweled sandals she was out the door by ten that morning.
Now it was about one in the afternoon and Dionysus was not feeling any better than she had that morning. She knew why Damien had suggested that she get out the house and roam Miami, because that was what she used to do when she was younger. Whenever she got upset Di would take her camera and just go explore, capturing moments that moved her along the way. But nothing was moving her. Her heart was heavy and nothing seemed to be able to lighten the weight.
Rounding the corner of a city street, Dionysus noticed the sign for an antique store and finally her interest was slightly peaked. Her muse had always been attracted to old things. There was just something about them and the story they have to tell. However, Di never made it in the store. Right in the window was an grandfather clock that instantly catch her attention. It was a gorgeous piece with intricate details in the woodwork. She stood there for a moment transfixed just watching the second hand make its clockwise rotation.
As she stood looking at the grandfather clock, she found herself thinking of the concept of time. Some people say that time heals and fixes everything, but that is only about destination of time … but what about the journey. Two months ago, Dionysus was in Italy with Israel. They were enjoying a vacation in a lovely little villa in Tuscany. They had drunk good wine, ate excellent food, and spent hours in each other’s arms while the Tuscany air breathed flowed through the windows. A month later, she and Israel were preparing to leave for Africa when Di just couldn’t seem to shake a bug. When she had gone to the doctor in Manhattan he informed her she was not sick but that she was four weeks pregnant. That been such a unexpected surprise for both her and Israel, but both realized they were ecstatic about the news. The only downside was that now, Dionysus had to stay home.
The Congo was notorious for her treacherous forest and extreme wild life. It was no place for a woman with child. So a week after receiving the joyous news Israel had left on his own while she stayed at their shared penthouse in Manhattan. She had heard from him once he had just got there and he promised to return as soon as possible. But then it was suddenly two weeks and Di had heard nothing from Israel in that whole time. And then time stood still when the company that employed her and Israel to go into the Congo called and asked her to come into their office.
She could barely hear them pass the ringing in her ears when they told her that Israel was not coming home. They had said something about a rockslide and there was nothing they could do. There had even been a transmission that they didn’t want her to hear, but she demanded that they did. Her dreams are still haunted with the sounds of screams as the sound of moving rocks filled the background. Her Israel was lost in the heart of the Congo and something in her heart died in that moment. Two days later she was walking through the front door of her brother’s Miami home and into his arms.
That was two weeks ago and she had spent most of that time in his guest room refusing to get out of bed. She had been through and seen a lot in young life, but she has never experience pain like she did in that moment when she was told that Israel was lost to her forever. And as she looked at the grandfather clock now, Dionysus did not see how time could heal that.
But as these thoughts ran cross her mind, Dionysus noticed some movement inside the store. She watched a little girl no more than two ran into the arms of a young woman that looked to be mother. And instantly Di’s hands went to her still flat stomach. Nine weeks ago, Dionysus was in Tuscany with Israel where they conceived a baby. She so happy then but time changed all that they had planned. But for the sake of her baby Dionysus was fighting like hell to get back what time stole from her.
Standing on the sidewalk outside the shop, Di pulled her camera from her purse she took it out of its case. And in that moment since she got that dreadful summons, Dionysus took her first picture. In the photo, Dionysus catch part of the grandfather clock but the main focal point was the little girl and her mother.
