Free period. It was that one time of day where one could be free of classes without skipping. For some students it meant extra time to get homework work done. For others it meant extra time to get into various shenanigans. For Evian it meant extra time to sit around and be bored at school. Usually she found the extra time to be extremely useful. Unfortunately her focus seemed to be a bit off today. Despite the fact that she was in the library, Evian's surroundings weren't helping her much. Outside the winter wind whistled. The sound wasn't loud enough to call violent, but it was loud enough to break one's concentration. The building might have creaked if it weren't so large and sturdy. The wind was accompanied by light flurries that slowly drifted toward the ground.
It seemed as though a good handful of students were also using the large, but somehow still seemingly restrictive room. Most of them had their heads buried in homework or whatever literature was “in” these days. The exception was a small group of students, mostly underclassmen who sat at a large table near Evian. They whispered in a loud, obnoxious sort of way. Despite the librarian's occasional, but ineffective shushing they continued in their annoyingness. Evian looked up from the book she was reading with an annoyed expression. Another student sat in a nearby cubicle. She looked like she was at least a junior. The girl subconsciously tapped her pen against the desk's wooden surface quickly and repeatedly. She was clearly into whatever she was doing. A large clock on the far wall ticked, marking each second of the day as they passed. The fact that Evian was constantly being reminded of how much time was wasting away wasn't all too helpful either. She began to sigh, but it turned into a defeated chuckle. There were a million other things that were far more interesting and here she was greying her hair over algebra homework. She found the subject to be a bit absurd. She doubted there would ever be a situation in life where she would need to know the square root of one million. She looked back down at her paper and scribbled over an incorrect answer in an unnecessarily aggressive sort of way.
“Ugh!”
