On the roof of her mothers house, Ramani pulled her knees closer to her chest, doing it slowly so she wouldn’t fall off of the slanted seat. She gazed up at the moon, watching it slowly rise into the sky. The sun had just gone down about an hour or two ago, she couldn’t quite remember because she had so much stuff on her mind. She was specifically thinking about the past few days. For one, Ramani was not a virgin anymore. For two, her father had become extremely ill. Lastly, she was pretty sure she was in love but she didn’t know how to deal with it. With just those three facts, her whole life had went downhill, yet uphill at the same time. She didn’t even know how to describe it. She was happy about the fact that one and two happened, though she was still shaky about the first one. Yet she was incredibly sad and scared for her dad. Ramani was very close to her dad, considering he had raised her and he had been the only parent in her life until just a few months ago. Wiping away a tear that had managed to escape, she sighed.
She didn’t want to think like this. She didn’t want to feel all pessimistic. She hated that. She was born an optimist and planned on staying that way for a long, long time. With a butt load of effort, she started humming a Cherokee lullaby that her father and her grandmother used to sing back when she was a little girl in Oklahoma. She smiled at the memories that came to her. Images of her grandmother and her flashed in her mind. Grandmother had been a loving and caring woman, often taking Ramani on treasure hunts. Together they usually collected bird feathers, colored rocks, flowers, eggs, and much more. Whatever they found, they made things out of the items. Necklaces, bracelets, earrings, hair pieces, clothing, pillows, blankets. Ramani had a huge chest full of things her and her grandmother made in her closet. She was too scared to pull it out though. She would only open it if somebody was with her.
”I miss you, e-li-si. I miss a-gi-do-da too.”
Sighing once more, Ramani closed her eyes, made a silent wish, and inhaled deeply. She longed to smell the scents of horses, flowers, and food cooking over fires. Yet none of that was here. All she could smell was rain, animals, flowers, and wildlife. It wasn’t exactly a bad smell alone, but all of the nature scents were mixed with the city scents. Gasoline, oil, burning wood, and greasy food. Together, the two different sources of scents were disgusting. Opening her eyes, Ramani tried to stand up but slipped slightly, causing her to instantly drop down into a crouch and grip the tiles on the roof as best she could. With wide eyes, she sat back down and brought her knees back up to her chest, scared of falling now. ”This was definitely not a good idea.” She didn’t get down though, she just stared at the stars in the sky, hoping somebody would show up and cheer her up. There were only three people that could do that. Luke, Gabby, and Mickey. Not even her mother could cheer her up. She went back to humming, closing her eyes again and listening to her own voice and the calls of the animals around her. She was too busy focusing on the animals to hear the footsteps headed toward her house.
